Chapter 154: Tied to Her Birth
Chapter 154: Tied to Her Birth
Lauren’s mouth fell agape.
She forgot that Alec’s mind didn’t work like normal people. He didn’t find her unsightly last night and was even amazed at how she killed the man.
"Are you sane? Because I don’t think you are."
Alec’s lips twitched. He seemed amused by her reaction. But then the mischief in his eyes vanished as his expression turned serious. He went back to the main topic, "Tell me your story now. I want to know everything, Lauren. I’d appreciate it if you don’t skip a single detail," the latter sounded more like a threat.
Lauren shifted in her seat, feeling uneasy. She sighed as she gathered her scattered thoughts.
"You are right," she gulped but the bile in her throat remained. "My sensitivity to cold is connected to what happened last night. I have yet to gather proof... but it seems like I have a black mage’s blood since I was born."
"Since when you were born? What do you mean?" Alec couldn’t figure it out. There had not been a case that a child was born with a black mage’s blood. It was only possible if the parent was a black mage but black mages weren’t capable of reproduction.
"I have read almost all books about curses and illnesses and found nothing about my condition. But I know that having the ability to absorb someone’s life energy is a kind of sorcery, so I didn’t seek help from the experts and did my own research because I can’t trust anyone..."
"When I was younger, it wasn’t as worse as this. I was only sensitive to cold and whenever I am flooded with emotions, I affect the temperature of liquids near me. As the years passed, I started to be attacked by extreme cold at least once every three months. But after I turned twenty, just earlier this year, I started to feel pain in my chest and the freezing of my body comes often..."
"I learned about my ability to absorb people’s life energy by accident. It was two years ago. I was having a stroll in the town when a few men followed me down the dark alleyways. While trying to fight them with spells, I held one man... I was so furious I wanted to kill him so bad, and all of a sudden, a dark smoke-like thing went out from his body which I soon realized I was absorbing. It was when I began to do my research because I fear my own ability. It was similar to a black mage’s way of consuming people’s souls, and I didn’t want to hurt anyone by accident..."
Alec’s eyes turned darker when Lauren mentioned the men who tried to harm her. They should be thankful they were dead now, he thought as he continued to listen.
"However, unlike a normal black mage, I don’t run wild. Aside from the freezing and chest pains, I can control myself whenever I absorb a person’s energy. Only Darius knows about my condition. I didn’t tell him, though. He just saw me killing someone by accident. It was him who searched for medicines that could help me."
"Your henchman?" Alec remembered that day at Haystone’s mansion. His eyes narrowed a bit but he didn’t say anything.
"Yes. He knows a skilled elder mage who makes pacifiers in the west county of Evardin. But he did not disclose my condition."
Most pacifiers worked with any kind of curse or illness. Lauren read a lot about it and ask senior healer mages months ago. She tried the normal pacifiers first but soon she realized that she needed a stronger type, until the elder mage Darius was acquainted with made the perfect one for her.
"There is nothing about your condition in books, neither have I heard and seen a person with the same condition as you. Why did you conclude that you have a black mage’s blood when you have no proof? Don’t you think it is a sort of a curse?"
"I didn’t find anything about my condition with specific details, but I found an ancient book about sorcery..." Materials with information about sorcery were banned in all kingdoms so she searched for it in the black market. "It said that in very rare cases, a female black mage can conceive a child through a combination of three forbidden spells. The spells were not mentioned as it was said to be very dangerous which most people don’t know of. According to the book, the child would likely be born with an incurable illness that that was never seen before."
"I’ve heard about a sorcery of combining forbidden spells," Alec said with his forehead creased as his thoughts ran deep. "I heard an ancient story once. It says that doing that kind of sorcery is very dangerous and will cost the caster’s life. Why, are you thinking that one of your parents is a black mage?"
Lauren became silent at the question.
"I think my mother was."
It took her years of denial before she finally accepted the possibility. Her father couldn’t be a black mage. She was sure of it. She knew he had low morals but he valued his throne more than anything else. Having a single drop of a black mage’s blood was enough to be thrown out of the castle, so he let his henchmen do the dirty work for him.
"For years, I blindly believed that what caused my mother’s death was Thalia’s poison, but when I grew up, I realized I overlook some details about her death..." Lauren told Alec how she witnessed her mother’s eyes turn all black once. She was a child so she didn’t think much about it and chose to believe that she saw it by mistake.
"I might be wrong as I never saw her run wild... but I have a feeling that whatever is happening to me... she was the root of it, that it came from her. She always knew how I was sensitive to cold. She was the one who heats my bath back then. And before she died, she told me to learn to be in control of my emotions..."
It was only recently she realized that whenever she was fueled with so much anger and flooded with emotions just like last night, she feels a strong urge to feed on people’s energy. A strong thirst for death.
"This is just an assumption, but I strongly believe that all of these are tied to my birth."
