Chapter 147: The King is Provoked (2)

The barrier dissipated and Alec took a few steps forward. The swords were threatening him a meter away but he stood there calmly without anything protecting him. He looked at Minister Haystone across the hall and his eyebrow flicked up with disdain.

"The Queen is innocent. She did not kill your daughter," Alec stated the truth even when he knew the minister would not believe it. "But I know you’d rather stick to your foolish assumption and I won’t convince you to believe me."

"Of course, you would cover your wife’s filth because you two share the same feathers! Both cunning and evil!" Minister Haystone’s voice thundered.

The rain started to pour outside accompanied by occasional roars of thunder.

"I wonder if you would call yourself a saint. We both know you have your fair share of evil, Haystone. And stop this chitchat, will you? You have to get through me first before you can lay your finger on the Queen."

Minister Haystone gritted his teeth in anger. He raised his hand and with one gesture, the swords in the air moved towards Alec at a fast speed, almost as fast as light.

But the swords stopped inches away before they could hit Alec without him doing anything. Minister Haystone looked at the swords confused and tried to manipulate them to no avail. His lips parted when the next moment the blades that were wrapped with red light were suddenly blazing with blue fire.

The swords slowly swirled until they were aiming at Minister Haystone.

"He really is so powerful, isn’t he?" Lauren spoke to Matthias who was standing close to her in a relaxed posture as if he wasn’t watching his King fighting an enemy but watching a comical theater play.

"He is. If he wasn’t, there was no way he would survive his family at a young age," Matthias replied, his eyes were filled with mirth as he stared at Alec.

"His family?" Now that it was mentioned, Lauren realized she knew nothing about Alec’s family. She never bothered asking Alec about it. But now that it was brought up, it became the subject of her interest.

"Why? What kind of family does he have?"

Matthias who was more focused on the swords flying towards Minister Haystone wasn’t able to follow what Lauren was asking. He made a small "Oh..." when the swords came to a halt the moment it was so close to hitting the minister. One of them stopped an inch from his eye which Alec did on purpose to instill some sense of fear into the man.

"Is that all you got? What do you think of the castle? Your playground?" Alec asked in a grim tone, the blue fire eating up the swords was reflected in his dark eyes. It only took a few seconds before the swords turned into ashes.

"I think I’ve played enough," with his vampire speed, Alec was in front of Minister Haystone the next moment. He didn’t give the man a chance to react and squeezed his neck with his hand wrapped with blue flames.

Alec pushed Minister Haystone up in the air. The flames in his hand slowly spread to the minister’s skin, sending the most torturous pain to the deepest of his soul.

"This is what I do to the people who dare threaten me," Alec said quietly. "You should thank me. You will see your dearest daughter soon. That is something you should be happy with. Am I right, Minister Haystone?"

The minister’s shrills of pain echoed in the castle. Alec dropped him when the flames had spread to his whole body.

"You are welcome," Alec muttered before Minister Haystone’s body was completely reduced to dust and the blue flames disappeared without damaging anything else but the man’s body. Alec controlled fire as easily as breathing as it was something he had mastered at an early age.

"That was quite a show, I must say," Lauren mused as she and Alec passed the large windows heading to the dining hall. The rain continued to pour outside but the thunders had subsided.

"I didn’t expect I would kill him today. He had been into illegal business and I still don’t have the full list of the people he worked with, the reason why I was keeping him alive. Unfortunately, he was a fool to provoke me this morning. I had no choice."

As they took seats at the dining table, Lauren remembered what she and Matthias talked about earlier. What Matthias said made it seem like Alec had a rough time with his family.

"I have a question..." Since their contract had been terminated and rules were thrown out of the window, she thought it would not hurt to ask him something personal.

Alec raised a brow at Lauren’s curious eyes. "What is it?"

"I just realized you never told me anything about your family. I don’t mean Mr. Hendricks and Samantha," the mention of the two reminded Lauren of the brief time she spent in the Everston’s manor. "I mean your parents..."

"How come you are asking about it now?" Alec remained relaxed at the mention of his family which made Lauren wonder if her assumption was right that he didn’t have a conventional family.

"I didn’t tell you anything because you seem to have no interest in it. It is new that you’re asking me things," the amusement in Alec’s tone was evident. "It is a development in our relationship, don’t you think?"

Their relationship. So it all boils down to that, huh?

"Your parents had passed away I heard, and you don’t have siblings. That’s all I know," she said, refusing to add something about the development in their relationship. "All sorts of gossip are rolling around the town but I never heard about your family. I also noticed there was not a single portrait of them in your mansion."

"I guess gossip died down early because people here know nothing. Although the bloodline of Everston is originally from Evardin, my father married a woman from Acheron, which is my mother, and they lived there. It was where I spent a few years of my life until my family’s demise."
