King of Titans and Dragons -
Chapter 712 - 712 704 The Fall of Cloud Island
Chapter 712: Chapter 704: The Fall of Cloud Island Chapter 712: Chapter 704: The Fall of Cloud Island “Why have you awakened us so prematurely this time?” The third gold coffin was opened, and a swordsman, wrapped head to toe in bandages and wielding twin swords, stepped out.
“The cataclysm happened two hundred years earlier than we predicted, and no nation on the continent was prepared for it,” Asimio answered, “So I had no choice but to awaken you ahead of schedule.”
“That’s not supposed to be possible,” the undead knight in heavy armor who had emerged first was somewhat taken aback, “Each cataclysm is predicted based on the accumulation rate of Death Qi from the earth’s crust. Even if there are deviations, they are at most about twenty years, not as far off as two hundred years.”
“We know there’s another reason behind this time, but now is not the time to investigate. What we should be thinking about now is how to protect the populace from this catastrophe, and allow more humans to survive.”
“Leave that to us. We will do our best to slay the monsters spawned from the River of Death Qi.”
“This is too unfair for you.” The Cardianl Archbishop Asimio looked sorrowful as he gazed at his former comrades, who have now become undead. They were abandoning their human identities, disregarding their past glories, transforming into undying monsters, to silently protect the continent when the Undead Cataclysm hits and the long night falls.
Due to their identities and their achievements, they were destined never to be known by the world, with this knowledge kept only among a handful of people at the top of the church. The Night Watchers had only sacrifices to give, no decorations to receive, no cheers to hear, and sometimes even suffered insults and revilement.
“What’s unfair about it? We were ready when we chose to become Night Watchers, the glory we’ve enjoyed in life was more than enough,” said the bandage-wrapped swordsman, wearing a mummy-like appearance, with a dismissive laugh.
“Let’s go. We won’t take up more of your time, Asimio,” said Pamela, her body completely engulfed in black mist, as she led the group away. She didn’t want to spend another moment with the man she had once loved. She wanted to weep, but not a single drop of moisture remained in her desiccated undead frame.
The most significant distance in the world is the distance between life and death. They were standing together, yet so close, yet touching even a little remained a luxury.
Under the watchful gaze of the elderly man, three legendary figures, now fallen and transformed into night watchers, walked out of this enormous tomb, leading those undead who had climbed out of their coffins to once again take up swords in hand to protect humanity.
“My lord!” Seeing the melancholy old man, his subordinates couldn’t help but take a step forward, as if desiring to say something.
“Let’s go. We are to awaken the Night Watchers of the next grave,” said the elderly man. In silence, the tears on his face had completely evaporated. His face was devoid of any expression as he recovered the dignity due to a Cardinal Archbishop and led his subordinates towards the next tomb.
The Continent of Obisto had faced the devastation of the cataclysm for more than ten thousand years. During this, there were countless legends who had fled because of the catastrophe, but also heroes who were willing to give everything to protect the continent. These noble legacies accumulated over generations have resulted in Night Watcher graves scattered throughout the continent.
…
“What’s going on with these undead? How can they have no wisdom?” In front of a human city surrounded by countless skeletons, Muria held up a skull with a metallic luster, examining it left and right, a look of bewilderment in his eyes.
As Muria was examining the specially preserved skull, the skeleton’s limbs were struggling to break free and attack him, displaying not a trace of fear.
“A gold rank skeleton with no hint of intellect, now that’s interesting,” Muria lifted the skull cap of the skeleton and pulled out its Soul Fire. He examined it carefully using his mental power but couldn’t establish any form of communication. The Soul Fire only contained impulses to kill and destroy. What was any of this? Even the low-level demons in the abyss had more going on in their heads than this.
“Your Majesty, these undead were born in the River of Death Qi. With the outbreak of the Undead Cataclysm, they emerge from the earth. Their sole purpose is to kill and destroy; there is no possibility for communication. If they possessed sufficient intellect, they wouldn’t be clashing with us and causing so much destruction,” explained a red-robed priest standing beside Muria, the highest-ranking bishop in the temple of the city behind them.
Their city was under siege by the undead, and the spirit light shield has already been on the verge of collapse. But, to their surprise, at the critical moment, Muria descended from the sky and swept away the undead besieging their city.
“That’s troublesome,” hearing the bishop’s words, Muria furrowed his brows. What was the most terrifying aspect of these low-level undead? Their sheer numbers and their fearlessness towards death.
The so-called undead were just an alternative form of life capable of manipulating Death Qi. They weren’t exactly dead, as they could still move, hence why they were called undead. While they lacked desires like eating, enjoying, mating like live beings, they still had other needs.
When those low-ranking undead continuously evolved and developed intelligence, they would start fearing real obliteration. When faced with undeniable and unresistable threats, they too would retreat.
If the undead accompanying the Undead Cataclysm really possessed wisdom, human losses would be significantly less, but unfortunately, the undead cultivated by the River of Death Qi are all mindless beasts. Whenever they spot living beings, they only know to kill, and thus, they have caused so many disasters on the continent.
“If you encounter any irresistible undead, remember to use this for help. If any patrolling Giants happen to pass by here and receive your signal, they will come to assist.”
Muria handed a rescue crystal to the archbishop whose face held glimmers of hope.
“Thank you for your support, sir.” Seeing the communication crystal in Muria’s hand, the priest displayed a face filled with joy and excitement. After the outbreak of the Undead Cataclysm, she had often cried for help till her voice ran hoarse, only to receive no support.
“I should get going.” After one last glance at the city littered with skeletal remains below, Muria transformed into a golden rainbow and shot towards the sky, taking her leave in an instant.
…
“So, this is where the little guy who destroyed my base lives. It seems quite extraordinary, boasting such an enormous maze.”
On the outskirts of Xena Pus, concealed by grey fog, ghost ships glowing with a blue light began to appear one by one. Among them, in the center of a nearly ten-thousand-meter-long super-warship, Barbossa, dressed as a captain, gazed at the seemingly empty night sky. The fire of his soul flared within his eyes, revealing his excitement.
“Let’s see what secrets this maze hides!” Barbossa extended his palm forward. In this instant, his palm seemed to expand infinitely, and array patterns within his palm began to crack and the fog began to thin.
Then, Xena Pus, composed of one hundred and thirty-two cloud islands, materialized before Barbossa’s eyes. The grand and majestic sight left Barbossa, who had just unlocked one part of the maze, stunned for a moment. Then he… triggered Xena Pus’s defense mechanism.
Waves of incredible energy ascended from the nearest cloud island and fired towards his position. Simultaneously, a massive alarm rang out across different cloud islands in Xena Pus. In an instant, the whole place was ablaze with red spirit light, with floating ships and the Void battleships Muria had left behind, taking to the skies…. At this moment, Barbossa seemed like he had stirred up a hornet’s nest.
“So, this is that kid’s base? Pretty impressive, at such a young age, yet managed to accumulate such a wealth. Well, don’t blame me for not being courteous.”
Seeing this scene, not only did Barbossa show no fear, he became even more excited.
His wariness of Muria was mainly due to the power she held; he didn’t pay much importance to her existence, and even less to the forces she had developed.
Following his command, countless cannons among his Ghost Fleet began to glow, then fired thousands of Death Qi cannons at several cloud islands in Xena Pus.
A severe explosion echoed throughout Xena Pus, from each cloud island multiple defensive light screens ascended while enormous dragons, holy angels, and mighty giants soared from the higher cloud islands.
However, none of these were as quick as the gunshots fired by the ghost ship. Amid the ceaseless bombardments of the ghost ship, the defense of the four cloud islands closest to Barbossa was ultimately destroyed, and then the beams of Death Qi struck the islands directly.
It was annihilation – those human laborers who came into contact with the Death Qi cannons were instantly vaporized, and those who managed to avoid it were turned into undead due to the spreading Death Qi.
“This is what happens when you mess with me!” Barbossa roared, a little excited, even seeing several Legends flying towards him, he was unfazed, if anything he was all the more thrilled. Killing a few Legends should upset that little guy even more!
In the Wind King Castle at the Central Cloud Island, the Wind King’s Hawk Crystal Egg, buried underground by Muria, began shaking the moment Barbossa broke the maze. Cracks surfaced on it one by one, and a dreadful pressure seeped out from within, compressing the space around and leaving slight space rifts on the egg.
And on one of the higher cloud islands in Central Cloud Islands, in one of the cloud islands marked for research by Muria, an unkempt old man with sloppy dressing, opened his eyes. Looking down in a daze, his eyes reflected a hint of annoyance.
Below Xena Pus, just as Barbossa was about to make another move, a chilling sensation arose, causing the fire in his soul to tremble….
“Leave!” Even though he didn’t sense any strong auras, just the instinctive reaction of his soul fire was enough for him to order a retreat. Initially, he thought he could do the same as the guy who took down his base, destroying this one too.
But that soul-warning from the previous instant left him trembling, there must be something extremely terrifying hidden within these cloud islands, something capable of causing his downfall.
“A Titan? No! It must be a Golden Dragon, how shameless! They assigned such a strong bodyguard for that kid, so what kind of exercise is he supposed to be out there for?” Encased in terror, Barbossa hastily retreated with his Ghost Fleet, grumbling with indignation along the way.
