Chapter 711 - 711 703 Night Watchman
Chapter 711: Chapter 703: Night Watchman Chapter 711: Chapter 703: Night Watchman “Long night is coming!” Arriving at the edge of Central Cloud Island, Muria looked down from above, and the biting chill of the high altitude wind brought him not discomfort, but a sense of refreshing coolness.
Muria remembered when he first arrived on this subcontinent, looking out over the land to see a vibrant scene of life. That sight of a sea of greens, now unseen, was replaced by a grayscale fog covering the land. Beneath the cover of this fog, the earth was lifeless and sombre, bringing an eerie discord.
According to the information he obtained, this deathly qi would thicken with time, throwing the entire world into a long night. When that time comes, it would be a carnival for the undead.
To ordinary humans, it would be a disaster. Wrapped in the veil of long night, they would not be able to grow any crops and could only live off the food stored previously. However, because this catastrophe came so unexpectedly, many nations were unprepared. It was foreseeable that tragedies would erupt over the struggle for food.
“The Undead Cataclysm!” A flash of crimson flames sparked beside Muria, and the ten-winged Michaela shared the look down below.
Being naturally dominant, Michaela couldn’t imagine that Muria was thinking of ordinary, fragile mortals whom she saw as ants. She was a top-tier being, standing above billions of extraordinary beings, with mortals bowing down in reverence beneath her.
“Mija, did I inadvertently cause this disaster to erupt earlier? If this did happen because of me…” Muria’s eyes flashed with seldom confusion. Even though he had been living in a non-human form for more than a hundred years, he still hadn’t completely abandoned his past human experiences.
Within this subcontinent alone, it had a population of two billion people. However, the eruption of an Undead Cataclysm could cause the death rate of ordinary humans to reach over seventy percent. Even legends might fall during the disaster. This was why the catastrophe was referred to as a cataclysm, as it was unstoppable.
“So what if it was? What if it wasn’t? Hasn’t it already happened? Isn’t the remaining problem to defeat with our fists? Do you have any other choices?”
Michaela asked unconcernedly. She didn’t care whether it was due to Muria that the cataclysm had erupted prematurely. She only cared about what powerful monsters would appear in this cataclysm.
“Indeed,” Muria showed a smile, the confusion in his eyes disappearing.
…
“Our losses are getting more severe. More Undead Dungeons are being overrun. We were unprepared when the disaster arrived this time, and our losses will exceed any previous ones.”
In the visibly bright and sacred hall, a group of cardinal archbishops dressed in gold-trimmed red robes gathered around a round table. Everyone had a stern look and wore solemn faces. On the round table was a map of Obistro Continent.
On the map, every city in the Human Kingdom was clearly marked with white dots, and the entrances to the Undead Dungeons were marked with black dots.
The map was changing dynamically. Black dots emitted grey fog slowly diffusing to their surroundings, having the white dots in pressure. It was visible that on the map, some dim white dots gradually extinguished under the erosion of the grey fog. This represented that some cities had fallen to the onslaught of the undead tide. The implication of the city’s seizure under the cover of the long night was self-evident.
“We need more power; decide now whether we should awaken those heroes,” a cardinal archbishop suddenly spoke, seeing the situation.
“It is not yet the critical moment. We do not need to awaken those monsters,” another archbishop replied coldly, expressing disapproval with an apparent distaste on his face.
“Watch your language. They voluntarily sacrificed themselves for our human race, and they were our predecessors. Don’t let me hear you insult them with such terms a second time, or I won’t be so polite,” a whole heap of light erupted from the red-clothed grand archbishop, with a host of holy long swords floating in his divine light.
“Ahem, let’s continue the discussion! Let’s not argue, what’s there to argue?” Someone stood to mediate.
“I understand. I misspoke, apologize,” looking at the others’ disapproving glances, the cardinal archbishop who used the term ‘monsters’ lowered his head in submissive apology.
“I believe, given the current situation, awakening the Night’s Watch is an issue of sooner or later. There is no need to drag it out. Waking them up earlier can protect more people!”
“I disagree. The Cataclysm only entered its second phase. There is no need to awaken these heroic spirits.”
“If so, let’s decide by voting!”
“I agree!”
“Agreed!”
“Oppose!”
“Abstain!”
…
“Fifteen votes in favor, three abstentions, seven against. Thus, the result of the meeting is to awaken the Night’s Watch.”
“This is a ridiculous move. No matter how serious this cataclysm is, it can’t wipe us, humans, out. Now, we are actually relying on these monsters which could go out of control at any time.” The insolent Red-clothed Grand Archbishop stepped forward, his face showing displeasure, and prepared to leave the palace.
“How dare you!” Divine light surged from an elder, forming several holy swords and slashing towards the insolent Red-clothed Grand Archbishop.
“Enough! Now is not the time for internal strife.” Seeing the elder attacking, several archbishops intervened hastily. “Awakening the Night’s Watch should be our priority!”
After a round of pulling and booming noises, the thirteen Cardinal Archbishops who had voted in favor divided into thirteen teams with their own Red-clothed bishops and set off for thirteen locations on the continent.
“We have arrived!” After a not-so-difficult journey, one of the teams arrived at a mountain next to a structure resembling a pyramid.
The leading Cardinal Archbishop looked up at the mountain, or rather, the tomb in front of him, showing a look of remembrance in his eyes. His face was extremely old, his wrinkles piled up layer upon layer, looking as if he might die at any moment.
“Let’s go in! Remember, those who are sleeping inside are the heroes of our human race. If anyone dares to disrespect them, don’t blame me for being rude.” The elder looked at the priests and knights behind him and issued a stern warning. He knew that what they were about to see would greatly shake the beliefs of these young ones.
“We all know, sir.” A knight commander stepped forward, looking at the tomb in front of him with an expression of admiration.
As a boom echoed, the entrance of the tomb opened. A chilling death Qi then gushed out from the inside, making the whole place feel horrific. However, the Cardinal Archbishop showed no surprise.
He led the way into the tomb, and after a long alley, they saw row upon row of bronze coffins and dozens of silver ones. From thousands of meters away, they could clearly see three golden coffins that were distinct from the others.
“My old comrades, I have finally seen you all again.” The Cardinal Archbishop looked at these coffins, and his eyes filled with old tears. “If I could, I really wouldn’t want to disturb your sleep.”
Suddenly, the sound of metal friction echoed, and a creepy scene appeared around the team: one by one, coffin covers were pushed open by steel-clad hands and the Qi in the tomb became even colder.
“Indeed, the legendary ancestors all turned into Undead!” Seeing this scene, the priests and knights, who had already anticipated what they were going to face, unconsciously tightened their formation and prepared for combat. It was an instinct.
“Asimio, your crying is too ugly!” Suddenly, the lid of one of the three golden coffins flew up. A hand clad in armor reached out from the inside, grabbing at the edge of the coffin, and then a knight, three meters tall, sat up. To their surprise, he was wearing the armor of a temple knight, which, although identical in style, had turned from pure to grayish-black.
The blazing soul fire could be seen through the slits in the helmet, and thick death Qi formed a natural shield on the surface of his armor. This was a legendary knight who had fallen and turned into an Undead.
“Has the catastrophe begun? To what stage has it advanced?” The awakened Legendary Undead Knight stood up, stepped out of the golden coffin, flexed his body, and spoke in a calm soul sound.
As he stepped out of the coffin, the knights who had initially pushed open the heavy coffins also stepped out orderly, not uttering a single word, merely watching the church team that had entered their midst with their soul fire burning eyes. They were once part of them.
“We have just entered the second stage.” Cardinal Archbishop Asimio replied with a bitter smile.
“If we have only just entered the second stage, why have you awakened us so early?” Another golden coffin was silently lifted, and an Undead dressed in a black priest robe stood up. Black death Qi swirled around her, concealing her face, but Asimio knew she was looking at him.
“Pamela.” Seeing this Undead appear, the old man’s face grew more pained. This was his former lover, who had unexpectedly fallen during the catastrophe 1,800 years ago. Given the choice between going to the Divine Kingdom to enjoy eternal life and becoming an Undead to guard the continent, his beloved had resolutely chosen the latter, and to maintain her own will, his lover usually slept in the tomb.
“Asimio, so many years have passed, and you’re still such a worrywart. I’m not dead yet.” Pamela, who had fallen into an Undead, said impatiently after seeing Asimio’s tearstained face. However, in the silence, the grey fog around her grew denser. She did not want her lover, with whom she had experienced the most beautiful times, to see her ugly appearance now.
