Chapter 1269 - 1269 1255 City Covered by Darkness
Chapter 1269: Chapter 1255: City Covered by Darkness Chapter 1269: Chapter 1255: City Covered by Darkness “Your Excellency, how can we find this deity? Are we just supposed to wait here?” Auston asked with great unwillingness, sensing from Muria’s tone that this Epic Titan had an extremely high chance of dealing with the deity from the Different World—almost a sure win.
Accordingly, it could also be deduced that Auston’s chance of striking it rich this time was equally secure. But the sole problem was that this Evil God was too good at hiding, making it impossible to locate Its true form and the whereabouts of Its Divine Kingdom.
“We have to wait. In my sensing, the power of this deity is pervading the entire Domain; I can’t pinpoint where Its Divine Kingdom is,” Muria surveyed everything around him, especially the humans who were utterly oblivious that they had become a resource for a deity to restore its power.
“Only when the power of this deity is restored to a certain extent, when Its true form begins to stir up trouble, will we be able to catch Its tail and then finish It off.”
“Your Excellency, might we be wasting our time for nothing? Could it be possible that the deity, sensing your presence, will play it safe all the way through and never show up?” Auston asked somewhat anxiously.
A deity that could subsist by absorbing negative emotions yet remained elusive, if It really decided to withdraw and endure for tens of thousands of years within Its Divine Kingdom, Auston certainly couldn’t wait that out; but such a span of time would be nothing to such an evil deity.
“That’s impossible, rest assured. It should have sensed our presence by now, but It is only aware of your suppressed power and the power of my Reincarnated Body. Once It feels Its power has recovered enough to deal with us, It will definitely make a move,” Muria explained confidently.
“Why are you so certain?”
“Because I’ve noticed that the negative emotions It’s absorbing are mixed with pride and wrath. It can endure now due to Its lack of strength, but once It perceives that Its power exceeds ours, ha.”
“I see now, heh heh.”
…
“Could it be that only when their lives are under threat and they are stricken with fear, will they then comprehend the gravity of the situation and make wise decisions?”
Modo stood atop a tower high enough to oversee the entire city, which, including the largest area of commoners’ slums, had become brightly lit.
One could see that every hundred meters along the walls on both sides of each road hung a wall lamp emitting a soft light, and in the sky, steam airships with large oil lamps continued their patrols.
“It’s such a pity; these wise decisions are made much too late. Had they been made a bit sooner, the situation wouldn’t have become this dire. But now, the evil god’s corruption has already manifested,” the elder lamented.
An old man wearing a gray robe, wielding a Deadwood Staff in one hand and holding a Crystal Ball in the other, slowly materialized. Within the Crystal Ball in his hands was a miniature city exactly like the one below, and within this miniature, an unsightly and twisted stain was spreading at a slow yet relentless pace.
“Is there really nothing that can be done, Elder?” Modo asked, somewhat reluctantly.
“There’s nothing we can do. The power of the Evil God far exceeds ours; all we can hope to do is suppress. To talk of eradicating it is pure fantasy, unless someone arises on our side with equal power to the Evil God,” the elder responded.
“…” The Hunter remained silent. In this silence, he opened the metal case that he always carried with him and drew out a weapon heavy with the stench of blood.
“Don’t be too tense, although the corruption has already appeared, the Exorcism Lamp is still working. Maybe tonight won’t…”
Roar!
Before the elderly man could finish his words, an inhuman roar echoed in the brightly lit city, which still had pockets of darkness. With this roar, an Exorcism Lamp on a street swayed twice, and then extinguished.
As the flames died out, a cold breath appeared and then started to spread wildly. Wherever it went, the faintly exorcism-effective oil lamps were extinguished en masse, like a series of toppling dominoes.
The sudden darkness, coupled with the roars of unknown Monsters in the dark, caused the residents who felt their city becoming unfamiliar to shiver uncontrollably. From this, fear was born, and the monsters’ roars grew even more dense.
Just as the many residents felt fear, providing power to a weak being, a roar like thunder on a clear sky rose above the increasingly panicked city, instantly suppressing all unrest.
And with a flash of Red Light that illuminated the entire city in an instant, the ensuing deafening explosion and roaring noise brought the monsters’ roars to a complete halt.
As Exorcism Lamps were relit one by one, the night that had become fraught with crisis seemed to be returning to calm. But how could the power of the Evil God be stopped so easily? A Deity that draws strength from the negative emotions of Creatures is most adept at manipulating the hearts of men.
Just as the city’s residents thought the night would pass like this, the Exorcism Lamps began to extinguish in large swathes by streets, and an even denser darkness, thick enough to make one unable to see their own hand, appeared.
Thus, the Red Light reappeared, but this time, the glow that seemed to bring hope to the city did not end the monsters’ roars. Instead, more and more roars of Monsters arose, heralding the start of something ominous.
The shining Red Light grew even fainter, and the triumphant roars of Monsters completely overwhelmed it. Then, a succession of explosions and roars resounded, and the residents saw Steam Airships with huge oil lamps fall from the sky, creating even larger explosions, yet strangely, no fire broke out.
It seems the flames that could bring light were simply not allowed to exist, for once they appeared, they were doomed to be devoured by the darkness.
After the unsettling explosions persisted for a while and the city was again shrouded in darkness, with no trace of light, it fell into an eerie silence.
Of course, in this silence, some could hear something climbing on their roofs, while others felt something lurking outside their houses, as every so often, an ear-piercing scratching noise was heard against the glass.
…
“We were wrong, we greatly underestimated the power of the Evil God. It’s only just begun, and we’ve already been defeated. No one can stop the Evil god’s corruption now, this world is going to become the plaything in the palm of the Evil God.”
“I refuse to believe there is nothing that can check the power of the Evil God; if he truly were an invincible entity, why then, over the course of the years, has he lapsed into quiescence?”
