Chapter 870: Chapter 870: The Marvel of Evolution
"You killed someone," Xu Huo reminded.
"So what if I did?" the female player replied. "The host never said we couldn’t kill during the mission. At worst, we’ll just fail to pass the level. I’m not willing to hold back this anger!"
At the moment that woman thought of abandoning her and Xu Huo, it signified that there could be no friendship between them.
Come to think of it, can people who enter here really have friendships?
The two followed the monkey to find the next entry and exit pod, the female player saying, "This instance just wants us dead. Where is there any pure friendship in the game?"
Adding an adjective here completely increased the difficulty several times.
"The ship will straighten itself at the bridge, there’s no need to smash the pot just because it’s cracked," Xu Huo said.
The female player scoffed, "It’s only failing to complete the mission, it’s not yet to the point of smashing the pot."
The two walked through the dense forest for a long time without receiving any hint of the entry and exit pod’s location. After another ten minutes, Xu Huo stopped, released several monkeys first, and then alerted the female player, "Something’s coming."
The female player immediately pulled out an electric whip, looking at the monkeys with a malevolent expression, "They intentionally led us here!"
"Squeak squeak!" These evolved monkeys were very smart, cried out twice at her, and then quickly dispersed in all directions. They were small in size and disappeared in the blink of an eye, while the female player couldn’t focus on dealing with them anymore because of the crashing vegetation ahead, clearly indicating a large mutated animal.
However, Xu Huo was slightly more sensitive; he was the first to spot this giant beast. Although there were no other fierce animals chasing it, this giant beast was running wildly, changing direction midway several times in a panic-stricken manner. As the distance closed, Xu Huo heard another small, dense sound covering a wider area, seemingly enveloping the entire forest floor!
Realizing what it might be, he leaped on the spot, grabbing a string to escape the forest.
After creating some distance from the ground, the fleeing mutated animal also reached their vicinity—a beast three times the size of a normal leopard, which frantically climbed up a nearby large tree.
Coincidentally, that tree was also the hiding place of the White Monkey; after it climbed up, a few White Monkeys quickly jumped to another tree. However, this was the tallest tree around, and the leading White Monkey was unwilling to give up its territory. It confronted the Mutated Leopard on the tree. However, the tree soon started to sway without any wind.
At first, it was a mild shake, then seconds later, it began to lean to one side.
"What is that thing?!" the female player, holding a propeller-type gadget, exclaimed in shock as she watched the dense black mass at the base of the tree.
"It looks like some type of ant," Xu Huo said vaguely; actually, those creatures hardly looked like ants anymore. The colorfully exotic ants the female player picked up had strange sizes and colors but could still be identified as ants at a glance. These creatures had evolved a pair of praying mantis-like grasping legs, bodies as long as a finger, and their mouthparts had evolved unusually large, capable of gnawing down a large tree in just seconds.
Their target was the living creatures in the tree.
After the tree fell, the swarm of ants quickly changed direction, directly heading toward the Mutated Leopard.
The intelligence and abilities of mutated animals had increased; the Mutated Leopard ran wildly away the moment the tree fell, while a monkey got trapped under the tree.
The bulk of the ant swarm astonishingly chased after the Mutated Leopard, leaving only a small group crawling towards the tree.
"Squeak Squeak!" The remaining few White Monkeys frantically scratched their heads on the tree; one of them saw Xu Huo and mimicked a human by kneeling and kowtowing to him on the tree.
"These monkeys are quite smart..." The female player began to say but mid-sentence changed her tone, surprised, "You’re not seriously thinking about saving some beasts, are you?"
The line of the kite accurately landed on the White Monkey. However, the gadget might not work on animals, and Xu Huo thought he wouldn’t be able to pull it up, but the White Monkey unexpectedly grasped the kite line and cried out towards him.
Xu Huo pulled it out; the little thing was probably scared and scrambled up the kite line itself for two meters, tail between its legs, hanging mid-air while shouting and looking downwards.
It took three minutes for the entire ant swarm to pass by. They caused little damage to the plants but consumed quite a few small animals, leaving bones messily scattered in the undergrowth.
"Evolution is really terrifying," the female player picked up a white animal bone, "There are bite marks all over the bone; in a few more years, they might even consume the bones completely clean."
Xu Huo found the few monkeys more intriguing.
Primate animals are relatively smart but aren’t capable of independent thinking, usually relying primarily on imitation or needing specific ways for training. However, these White Monkeys actually knew to ask for help, indicating they possessed intelligence surpassing that of normal animals, learning some human expression methods.
Who knows to what extent these creatures could evolve given enough time.
He put the White Monkey back on the tree and waved his hand, "Goodbye."
The monkeys crouched in a row watching him, then the leader pointed in a certain direction, and after that, led its companions away, climbing along the trees.
Xu Huo decided to walk in the direction pointed by the monkey.
However, the female player disagreed, "It can’t be guaranteed that those monkeys didn’t intentionally lead us here towards the ants. That direction might also be dangerous; with the jungle this vast, can’t we find another entry and exit pod?"
Xu Huo pointed to the sky, "It’s getting dark."
Although players can use other means to see at night, animals hunting at night are especially agile. Since the dangers encountered during the day were still within a controllable range, it was best to try to get out earlier.
"Let’s go and take a look first; if not, we’ll search along the way," Xu Huo judged the direction, "We’re not too far from my entry and exit pod."
The female player thought about it and spoke no more.
The two didn’t walk far in the direction pointed by the White Monkey when they received a hint. However, by the time they hastened their pace there, someone had arrived before them.
The person had already peeled back the bark disguising the pod door and was attempting to open the entry and exit pod.
"Did you also complete your mission?" the player had noticed them, turned around happily, "This entry and exit pod seems to be damaged; it can’t be opened."
The two didn’t approach, the female player said, "A damaged entry and exit pod will automatically seal shut; you shouldn’t try to break the pod door, maybe someone will come to fix it later."
"So that’s how it is," the player regretfully said, "I definitely can’t open it; maybe you two could try?"
"Be careful," the female player cautioned.
Although the person said for them to try, he didn’t move away; if he really had completed the mission, there was no need for him to do so.
Xu Huo had also noticed, but to avoid being robbed, he used "Straight-Line Distance" to teleport in front of the pod door and also used "Like Repels Like."
