Kaidan Game Train: Abide Rule or Die! -
Chapter 858 Suspicion
Chapter 858: Chapter 858 Suspicion
"Isn’t that obvious?" the burly player stationed by the side immediately said, "Weren’t we just discussing who made the move?"
The player with the severed finger glanced at the other in the darkness, then continued, "What I mean is, since that’s the case, there’s no need to insist on finding out who it was."
That’s the normal way to take the train.
"But we were almost killed in our sleep just now," Xu Jinfeng said. "What if the same thing happens again?"
It’s not always that you’d have such good luck to wake up in time; you might end up like the two corpses in the carriage, beheaded silently.
"How about we check the carriages before and after us?" Xu Huo suggested. "If the situation is the same as ours, we can close the doors and not suspect each other."
"Who dares to go out?" Xiao Xianglin asked.
"I’ll go check." The smoking player stood up, his tone impatient, "All this fuss about such a trivial matter."
He didn’t wait for the others to respond and went straight out the door, considerately closing it behind him as he left.
The group "watched" as he entered the opposite carriage, then heard the door open twice more, and soon the footsteps returned.
Xiao Xianglin, standing at the door, opened it for him. The other man went straight in and said, "A few are dead over there too, their condition is about the same."
"Wow, the murderer sure works fast," the female player said.
The players in the carriage began to feel uneasy. Xu Jinfeng said, "There’s no extra person in our carriage; if we close the door, won’t that solve the problem?"
"What if it was someone from our carriage?" the female player retorted.
"Aren’t you all missing the point?" the smoking player said. "Putting the entire train to sleep isn’t that easy; normal props wouldn’t achieve that effect."
"What if the other party is an advanced player?" Xiao Xianglin asked.
The smoking player was getting impatient, but the cigarette had been out since before the lights went off. He subconsciously put it to his lips, inhaled a dry drag, and then took it out, "Just clean your neck and wait to die then."
Xiao Xianglin was taken aback, while Xu Huo next to him said, "Maybe it was through other channels, like poisoning the air and food."
"That’s right!" Xiao Xianglin clapped his hands, "That woman didn’t order a meal, right? She was the first to be killed, maybe because of that, and if everyone in a carriage was asleep, why wouldn’t the person just kill everyone one by one instead of picking a few from each carriage?"
"According to what you’re saying, the train attendants are the most suspicious?" the female player said.
Xiao Xianglin was caught off guard; though the train staff might not get paid, the game had requirements for them too; they could tentatively be seen as neutral NPC characters. The behavior of the blonde female player was not welcomed by the attendants but also not against the rules.
"This old man ordered a meal," said the burly player, referring to another corpse.
"The idea of being killed for not spending enough money doesn’t make sense," Xu Huo said placidly.
"But I agree with his opinion," the female player said. "Poisoning through air and food seems more reasonable than using props or characteristics."
"It’s hard to poison through food; the dining car is right in front of the attendants unless the attendants are blind."
"But the air is different," the female player said slowly, "Just open the door."
The suspicion fell on Xiao Xianglin.
He was the only one who fit the description, having gone to other carriages to sell potions.
"How could it be me!" Xiao Xianglin, taken aback, quickly clarified, "If it were me, I wouldn’t have fallen asleep just now. Yucong woke me up, ask him if you don’t believe me!"
"Indeed it was," Xu Huo gave a noncommittal confirmation.
The female player’s idea sounded somewhat reasonable at first, but in fact, it was less feasible than directly poisoning the food delivered by the attendants. Not to mention whether the train might have a pre-warning system—releasing a sleeping potion or some kind of poison on such a large scale, the first concern should be a train hijacking.
And with so many players on the train, it’s not likely that not a single one would notice someone releasing sleeping potions on board.
On the contrary, the possibility of props or characteristics is greater.
Xu Huo looked back and forth between the smoking player, who was nervously rubbing his pant legs, and the raincoat man in the corner.
Only the smoking player had gone to the rear carriage. Whether the players killed there were the same as in this carriage, only he knew, and no one went to the front carriage to verify, so whether the entire train was put to sleep was still up for debate.
The smoking player’s words were suspect of misleading others.
However, whether the whole train was affected would be clear once daylight came.
As for the raincoat man, the shadow he had seen with his eyes open looked somewhat similar to his attire.
After withdrawing his gaze, he looked again at the player with the severed fingers beside him.
His hands and neck were covered by clothes, and the palm was mostly hidden, only revealing the severed fingers during movements. However, his injury was fresh, and the other fingers had traces of electric shock.
It was just by coincidence that a player from the Holy Sword Society was also on this train.
"I was just saying, don’t get so worked up," the female player said with a light laugh in response to Xiao Xianglin’s agitation.
"Forget it, it’s obvious you’re not capable of that," the burly player added.
Xiao Xianglin inevitably felt wronged, paused for a moment, then asked Xu Huo, "Did you see it clearly just now? Didn’t you say someone was about to make a move?"
"It was too dark to see clearly," Xu Huo blurred his own vision, "I only felt someone standing in front of me, but they disappeared before any confrontation."
"I didn’t hear the door open," the player with the severed fingers noted.
"Right, I didn’t either," Xu Huo said. "So, I think it’s also possible that we saw an illusion."
"After all the talking, isn’t it still possible that the person is in our carriage?" the smoking player said irritably. "Since we can’t pinpoint anyone, everyone should just look out for themselves. If someone is unlucky enough to die, they can’t blame others!"
The others tentatively agreed with him and went back to their places.
To avoid falling asleep again, everyone kept their eyes wide open.
"I’m starting to doze off," Xiao Xianglin was the first to give in, suggesting, "Let’s play cards."
After saying that, he took the initiative to lend two pairs of glasses to Xu Huo and Xu Jinfeng.
The three who sat together to play cards didn’t last long before the female player in front started listening to ghost stories on her smartwatch. The eerie music made the already heavy atmosphere even more oppressive.
But considering the player with the black mole who died outside, everyone tactfully kept their mouths shut so as not to disturb her.
It wasn’t long before the smoking player started tapping on the table.
"Buddy, if you really can’t hold back, I’ve got some alcohol here," Xu Huo said.
The piercing "squeaking" sound didn’t stop. The smoking player, panting, said, "A real man quits drinking when he says he will!"
"What’s the point of quitting all of a sudden?" Xiao Xianglin muttered. "With a player’s physique, no matter how much you drink, you won’t get seriously sick, so just drink."
The smoking player didn’t speak anymore. His fingernails once again scraped "squeak—" across the table.
