Chapter 857: Beheading in Sleep
Chapter 857: Chapter 857: Beheading in Sleep
The attendant smiled and moved on to the next person.
With Xu Huo leading the way, the other players also generously tipped and handed out red envelopes—there was no need to offend the attendant over such a small sum of money.
Of course, there were some who didn’t give anything. The blond-haired female player was one of them; she didn’t just refrain from tipping, she didn’t even order a meal set, only asking for a bowl of noodles.
The attendant didn’t show any reaction and moved on as if nothing happened.
"I don’t see what the big deal is," said another player, who had given a gift pack, shaking his head with a pained expression.
"You seem to have plenty of money," said the player selling medicine as he took a seat next to Xu Huo and introduced himself, "My name is Xiao Xianglin. Bro, let’s be friends. Who knows, we might be heading to the same station."
"Yucong." Xu Huo looked at the backpacker sitting opposite him. The other replied, "Xu Jinfeng."
Besides the names, he didn’t seem inclined to talk more and soon put on headphones and closed his eyes to rest.
After exchanging a few words with Xiao Xianglin, who revealed he was heading to Sea World, and learning Xu Huo was going there as well, Xiao smiled and said, "Maybe we’ll encounter an instance together. Please take care of me then."
"Let’s take care of each other," Xu Huo replied politely.
Three hours into the journey, the attendant came through the carriage pushing a meal cart.
Except for the blond female player, everyone else ordered the five thousand meal set. Those who gave gifts were additionally given a pudding as a token of gratitude from the head chef.
Spending a bit more money on the train was a loss that most of the players in the same carriage seemed to understand. Xiao Xianglin was the first to enjoy his pudding, nodding at Xu Huo with a smile on his face.
The blond female player looked back, then turned to the woman at the next table and said, "Sis, with a figure like yours, you probably don’t like sweets, right? How about you give me your pudding, I love sweet things."
The woman didn’t respond to her at all and picked up a spoon.
The blond female player then turned to the man sitting across, who had a mole, "The cake on the menu is too expensive. How about I give you a hundred White Notes for it?"
"Do you think I’m stupid?" The mole-faced player swallowed his pudding in one gulp.
The blond female player let out a cold laugh, "Aren’t you afraid someone might have poisoned it!"
The time after lunch passed relatively peacefully. Perhaps due to the special occasion that day, the train broadcast even played sentimental music, and the beautiful female player proactively invited the mole-faced player to dance.
Good looking people dancing was a pleasant sight, and the atmosphere in the carriage relaxed. Xu Huo and Xiao Xianglin took turns inviting female players to dance.
Unlike when she first boarded, the woman seemed to be enjoying herself. In no time, her cheeks were flushed with excitement, and she even took out a bottle of wine from the luggage rack. Slightly tipsy, she left the carriage for the restroom.
The man with the mole was the first to follow her out.
The rest looked on without surprise, revealing expressions of disdain as if to say "the world is degenerating", and then they no longer paid any attention.
It didn’t take long for the woman to come back, her lips a different shade of red.
"Youth is wonderful," the elder said enviously, then with another implication asked the woman, "And the young man?"
"Oh, him," the woman’s tone lowered, "he went to another carriage."
That comment choked back the elder’s remaining words, and the blond female player also withdrew the contempt from her face.
"Heh," the female gamer chuckled coquettishly, returning to her seat with steady steps, tasting her wine she said, "Some people are just annoying, you don’t even want to talk to them, and they keep babbling on."
Xiao Xianglin, caught between awkwardness and a hint of fear, averted his eyes when the female gamer turned to look at him.
Xu Huo smiled and nodded at her.
She offered a faint smile in return and raised her glass to him before looking away.
Evening arrived quickly, and as the lights went out, the train car, along with the outside sky, plunged into darkness.
There had been some disturbances in the other cars when the lights first went out, but peace returned soon after, and silence ensued.
The breathing within the train car gradually became smooth and prolonged.
Under the rhythmic sound of those breaths, Xu Huo felt drowsy too. He closed his eyes to rest, but his consciousness began to blur until the stench of blood invaded his nostrils. He snapped back to awareness, opened his eyes, and saw a broad shadow standing in front of him, holding an axe.
Xu Huo reflexively swung his sword, but the shadow shattered like an illusion and disappeared.
He got up and saw that half of the players in the car had fallen asleep at their tables. The old man and the blonde female gamer had been beheaded, their bodies slumped against the table, blood pooled on the floor.
The young female gamer and the player with the severed finger were both awake. The man in the raincoat who had slept in his seat during the day now sat up straight, while the man with the cigarette between his fingers was squinting, looking quite unwell.
Xu Huo kicked Xiao Xianglin’s leg.
Xiao Xianglin struggled to sit up, forcefully prying his eyelids open, then took out a speaker prop and pressed the switch. A piercing and prolonged shriek instantly cut through the silence of the train car, waking most of the slumbering players, who became fully alert upon smelling the blood.
Some put on specially made prop glasses and immediately pressed against the car wall upon realizing there had been a murder, "Who did this!"
The few who were visible inevitably turned their gaze upon Xu Huo, who held a sword.
"Everyone, stay calm!" Xiao Xianglin spoke quickly, "It couldn’t have been Yucong, he’s the one who woke me up. Otherwise, you’d all still be asleep."
"Then what’s the situation exactly?" The backpacker Xu Jinfeng rotated his eyes suspiciously. Not being able to see, he had to judge others’ positions based on their voices.
"When I opened my eyes, they were already dead," Xu Huo said. "I was almost the third one."
"Then the person who woke up before you is definitely suspect," Xiao Xianglin said immediately.
"I was awake before he got up," the female gamer in the front seat said. "Not only me, but there were also three others awake."
She stretched out her finger to point out the player with the severed finger, the man in the raincoat, and the smoking player one by one, and then said to Xiao Xianglin, "Now, you tell me, which one of us did it?"
Xiao Xianglin’s face was grave in the dark. Just as he was about to say something, the commotion rose from the car in front. Someone then opened the door to their car but did not intend to enter, instead using a prop to seal the door.
Xu Huo looked back immediately, but the two rear cars were silent.
"It seems something happened up front too. There’s no noise from the back; maybe everyone’s dead?" The female gamer stood up and peered around.
At that moment, nobody dared venture out. Xiao Xianglin cracked the door slightly and called out towards the rear cars. Receiving no response, he promptly shut and locked the door.
"It’s not just one or two cars that have a problem," the player with the severed finger spoke for the first time since getting on the train. "From the lights out until now, it’s been less than two hours. Under normal circumstances, players wouldn’t be sleeping at this time, and even with external inducements, they wouldn’t be in a deep sleep state. It’s not possible for a player to roam every car and pick off targets in such a short period."
"So the problem lies within the car," she concluded.
