Chapter 759: Chapter 759: The Injection in the Puppet’s Arm
If this copy of the game refreshed every day without closure, they would enter a brand new copy the day after they cleared it. If they continued to stay here, they would become players without "Return Tickets," and might never be able to leave this copy. So, it was best to try to get out tomorrow at twelve-thirty.
"What was that artifact you used to lure Peng Fengnian and Sun Bo away?" Xu Huo asked Xiao Ling.
"Just a recorded sound," Xiao Ling said.
"They’ve been gone a bit too long," Yu Guangnan said. "Shouldn’t they have come back right away after realizing it was just an artifact?"
The three exchanged glances, then headed down to the next floor. The artifact Xiao Ling had left in the hallway was gone, and both ends were empty, with no sign of Peng Fengnian or Sun Bo.
Xu Huo took out his detector and headed straight into a room about ten meters away. Pushing the door open, a strong stench of decay rushed out. On closer inspection, there were two decaying corpses with artifacts on them, clearly players, and by the looks of it, they had been dead for several days.
"Are these Peng Fengnian’s companions?" Yu Guangnan asked in surprise. "Even if they didn’t take their companions’ bodies, they should at least have recovered the artifacts."
Even if they weren’t companions, picking up two artifacts wouldn’t be hard, especially since there seemed to be no monsters here.
Xu Huo frowned and quickly returned to the doorway, glancing left and right before swiftly realizing where the problem lay.
"Look at the scenery outside the window," he said.
Yu Guangnan didn’t notice anything amiss, but Xiao Ling quickly caught on, "The angle is wrong. There’s a distance of more than ten meters between two spots; you should see a change in perspective outside, but it hasn’t changed at all."
Yu Guangnan took a few steps to the left and right, tried it out, and then had to admit, "We’re trapped in an even stranger space. Could it be that Peng Fengnian and the others didn’t just run off but were swallowed by the space?"
To verify this idea, Xu Huo and the others wandered aimlessly in the corridor for a while, not only failing to find Peng Fengnian and Sun Bo but also not seeing Teacher Pan and the others.
"They wouldn’t have left us behind, would they?" Xiao Ling gritted her teeth and said. "The only reason we would have come here is because they interfered!"
Xu Huo was sure that Teacher Pan and the others certainly knew about this space and also knew how to get in and out. The purpose of bringing them here was merely to find a way out. There was no need to separate from them—unless this group didn’t understand this space at all, just anticipated danger with a do-or-die attitude.
The chances of escape on their artifact was wavering pitifully between "1" and "2."
Entering the Mirror Hotel from the Corpse-Hiding Hotel would bring the sound of footsteps, which didn’t require any player effort. However, entering this space from the Mirror Hotel required the help of a Spatial Artifact. Although footsteps could also be heard, it was clear that in both cases, the sounds were not a good omen but a presence that lured players into a trap.
Ordinary tickets and "Return Tickets" could not be used, either because the copy was in progress—although when they entered this space, they didn’t receive a copy notification, so it ruled out the possibility of a random copy within the hotel.
The tickets could also not be used if they were inside a container artifact, like the frame given to him by the Curator of the Hundred-People Art Gallery. But if the hotel space was within a container artifact, players wouldn’t be able to use their artifacts and couldn’t open the game panel, which did not match the current situation either.
That left one possibility: this space was not within the scope of the Dimensional Rift game, like some places the train tracks passed through that weren’t included in the game, and therefore the tickets naturally couldn’t be used.
But could the hotel space overlap with the copy space, creating this situation?
After failing to find other players, Xu Huo asked Xiao Ling and Yu Guangnan, "Under what circumstances can’t the tickets be used?"
"Outside the game, during the opening time limit of a copy, or when in a hallucination. I don’t know of any other situations," Xiao Ling replied and looked toward Yu Guangnan, who shook his head, indicating that he didn’t know any other answers either.
But this gave Xu Huo a reminder. He took out the beans for testing spiritual power that he had gotten from the Cannibal Player he killed earlier and scattered them on the ground.
In his Spiritual World, the beans grew like rice plants, but here, they climbed the walls like vines.
"What is this?" Xiao Ling asked.
Xu Huo briefly explained, and Xiao Ling couldn’t help but exclaim, "Doesn’t this mean we are all in an illusion?"
"If we’ve been in an illusion the whole time, how could you have received the clearance message?" Xu Huo said. "There is Mental Interference here, true, but it’s also an overlapping space."
That’s what was strange. Receiving the clearance notification proved that the game "signal" could reach here; it made no sense that only the tickets could not be used. Had he guessed wrong? Were Teacher Pan, Peng Fengnian, and the others not ticket-holding players?
"If only I had tried using the tickets back in the Mirror Hotel," Xiao Ling lamented. "I shouldn’t have been greedy for high-level artifacts!"
All three hadn’t used their "Return Tickets" or tickets to leave right away because they had other motives. But now, their schemes might trap them here forever!
Xu Huo followed the wildly growing beanstalks forward. Along the way, the beanstalks grew steadily until reaching the top floor of the hotel, where the beanstalks surged like a torrent toward the central suite, bursting open the door.
Coming up with them from another staircase were Teacher Pan and the others. Both parties looked at each other—Teacher Pan and his party in surprise and Xiao Ling’s party in fiery anger. Before either side could speak, a group of human-sized dolls rushed out of the room, pouring into the hallway and scattering them!
The dolls were running but made hardly any noise. Meanwhile, footsteps started echoing from downstairs again.
Seeing the endless stream of dolls pouring out of the room, Teacher Pan and his group didn’t hesitate to turn and run. Xiao Ling shouted, "They’re getting out, follow them!"
She and Yu Guangnan weaved through the dolls, but when they looked back, they saw Xu Huo being swept away by the dolls and disappearing at the stairway entrance. The two paused briefly and then continued onwards.
It wasn’t that Xu Huo was truly unable to escape from the dolls; rather, he noticed something special about one of them—it was dressed like a housewife and held a kitchen knife.
Although there were quite a few knife-wielding dolls, only this one’s knife had the same serial number as the one in the kitchen of the hallucinatory therapy room, and it matched the size of the missing knife.
Using a piano string, Xu Huo snared the doll and caught the hand wielding the knife as it swung at him, successfully obtaining the kitchen knife.
All the dolls stopped for a moment, and then, a second later, they simultaneously widened their eyes, making thunderous stomping noises. The doll Xu Huo had grabbed tore off its own arm and ran away. He checked the severed limb and found a pale green syringe inside the slot.
