Chapter 662: Chapter 662: Attacking the Safe Zone
Xu Huo didn’t mind the proposal at all, and he knew that if he refused again, the plane might not reach the interior of Country Y—and he truly didn’t want to make the trip a second time.
After agreeing readily, Nicks also appeared relieved, sitting opposite Xu Huo and chatting without probing into his identity or the so-called trade, merely discussing the recent situation in Country Y.
Nowadays, the exchange of information between countries was not so swift, and the major powers were too busy dealing with their own issues.
"Country X really is fortunate to have had no large-scale casualties thus far," Nicks said with a touch of envy, "unlike my country, which was forced to abandon a quarter of its territory."
The main issue in Country Y was still the epidemic event caused by the player invasion of Zone 014, which, to this point, had not been properly resolved. To contain the infection, Country Y directly isolated certain areas, and with the appearance of aliens, half of the country was now in deep trouble.
"Large-scale casualties?" Xu Huo drummed his fingers on the table, "Didn’t the Special Defense Department Headquarters just experience the black rain, where getting drenched would quickly turn one into an alien?"
"I did hear about that news, but Country X has the Antidote Fungus, so the problem shouldn’t be too big," Nicks said with a look of sympathy for humanity, "Under the sweep of such a tide, the common people are the most pitiable."
"Indeed," Xu Huo responded indifferently, showing no pity for those who had perished.
"How does Mr. Yu view players?" Nicks observed his expression, "With the changing situation, more and more people have gone from dislike and fear to trusting and relying on players. Sooner or later, all the countries in Zone 014 will become a community with a shared destiny. In my opinion, players, like weapons, are a double-edged sword."
"You’re thinking too much," Xu Huo glanced at him, "Do you still think ordinary people can control players? Zone 014 is not some community with a shared destiny; it’s just a gaming zone. Players can leave and never come back."
"This place is mired in darkness and poison; it’s better to settle in a more stable zone."
Nicks smiled, "After all, it’s home, where family and friends are."
"Life is what’s important, who cares about a homeland." Xu Huo sneered at his words, then asked the flight attendant for some wine.
The passengers on the plane still had no idea of his identity, but the aircraft’s crew members were well aware; the flight attendant first sought Nicks’ eye contact for permission before fetching the wine.
A bottle of fine, unopened wine was brought over, and as the flight attendant performed the opening of the wine, Xu Huo covered the top of his glass with his hand.
"You really have no sincerity at all, mixing something into the drink while serving guests?"
The flight attendant’s face changed color, and Nicks waved him away, then apologized sincerely to Xu Huo.
Xu Huo was still gracious, "Don’t think players are undetectable when they take action. I found out you haven’t produced much Antitoxin, but you sure have a lot of poison, carrying on the legacy of your ancestors."
Nicks could no longer maintain his smile, and he said sternly, "Mr. Yu, please show respect for my country, for my ancestors."
"I was praising you, didn’t you hear?" Xu Huo raised an eyebrow, "Either don’t do it, or do it completely. If you’re afraid of being talked about after doing it, you lack breadth of vision, don’t you?"
His words and expressions were completely at odds, leaving Nicks unsure of his true intentions.
The lengthy conversation wasn’t just idle chit-chat, but rather a character and psychological assessment of a player who had managed to board the plane. Every player who entered Country Y had to go through this procedure; the best outcome would be to win them over, and if not, to drive them away.
Nicks was not yet clear on Xu Huo’s identity, but from his speech and demeanor, it was apparent that he wasn’t angry about the incidents in Jing City, and he harbored some animosity towards Country Y, though that was no big deal.
Unless it was a matter of national or family vengeance, most personal grievances could be settled with attractive material offers.
After relaxing his expression, Nicks was about to resume the conversation, but Xu Huo suddenly pulled out a telescope and peered at the islands on the sea surface, "We’re already over the territorial waters of Country Y, aren’t we?"
Nicks had just opened his mouth to reply when his expression changed abruptly, and then he saw Xu Huo fall from the plane, seat and all, into the open air, followed by the roaring wind. In the next second, the latter disappeared from his seat!
"Spatial Artifact!" Nicks exclaimed in fury, ignoring the cries for help from the passengers and the panic-stricken fellow players. He plunged from the disintegrating plane and disappeared into the air seconds later.
This plane was doomed never to reach Country Y; within minutes, it would crash into the sea.
By this time, Xu Huo had already crossed oceans and land, reaching the completed and operational safe zone within Country Y.
"The Shortest Distance Between Two Points" didn’t throw him into the air like the "Open Air Window System"; instead, it brought him to a sudden halt right inside the main building of the safe zone.
Of course, that was where he had targeted, but he hadn’t expected the spot to be so central—he had crashed right into the middle of an ongoing leadership meeting.
Over a dozen people in the meeting room, along with several on video calls, all turned their heads to look at him.
"Hi!" Xu Huo greeted with a friendly smile, pulling half of the meeting room into the Spiritual World in the next second. Disordered bullets immediately shot toward the window, and before that, he had already moved to the doorway.
Donning a concealment artifact, he walked out as other players forced their way in through the doors. As he avoided the incoming crowd, he casually entered an empty office, yanked down the lamp, and pulled out the electric wires.
He only needed the "Life Core" to destroy the safe zone’s metal structures; there was no need to pick a specific place. As long as the safe zone was wired with cables, there would always be metal within reach.
For safety’s sake, he donned "Three Seconds of a Lifetime" upon landing, not just to regenerate health but also to inhibit the safe zone’s spatial artifacts.
He had seen the list from the Special Defense Department on the pioneer forum, but that was just a feint. His real destination was set from the start.
Not any secret weapon manufacturing sites, military locations, or other covert research facilities, but rather one of the few large, publicly-built safe zones that Country Y flaunted.
Nicks would never allow him to set foot on the soil of Country Y, so the military airport he spoke of was likely a facility on some small island, not only possibly filled with countless waiting players but also certainly under spatial artifact controls—Country Y had already traded with Artifact Makers, so they would definitely be on guard, which was also why he didn’t target secret facilities.
Even destroying military equipment on an island wouldn’t be very significant; by contrast, a newly-established or about-to-be-completed safe zone was much more fitting.
The last "sanctuary" that the government and citizens of Country Y longed for, once it collapsed under the watchful eyes of the public, and the alien threat re-emerged, the Country Y government would surely remember this painful lesson.
