Chapter 635: Chapter 635: The Weight and Fragility of Life
The alien crashed to the ground, yet more of them charged from a distance. Xu Huo stuffed the piano string into the female player’s hand, "Don’t let go, the third floor isn’t safe; take the two children and leave."
The female player looked exhausted, but her eyes were bright, "I’m beyond saving. Take the two children and run, I’ll buy you time!"
"There’s no need." Xu Huo lifted her to the third floor with two fingers. Once the two kids were strapped to her, he used the piano string to send them into the air, then turned to face the oncoming aliens.
The curtain of rain served as an obstacle, so the Crimson Sword could only be used for close combat, which is why he resorted to the Water Cutter Gun, allowing for long-range shooting. Coupled with his special abilities, killing the aliens did not require much effort.
After the first wave of aliens attacked, the female player suggested that he could take the chance to escape. Though more aliens were coming from afar, there was a brief interval, enough time for him to flee. But the man, who could move dazzlingly fast through the aliens, acted as if he hadn’t heard, not considering escape, and instead advanced towards where the aliens were coming from!
Under the black rain, his figure was almost impossible to capture, but wherever he went, aliens surely fell. Soon enough, the rain washed up the stench of blood, and other colors mixed into the muddy water on the ground.
With corpses scattered all over, Xu Huo didn’t stop until he had confirmed there were no more aliens nearby. He chose a higher floor and took the female player and the two children inside.
The female player was weak as she landed. She sat leaning against the sofa, desperately enduring the pain, "I’m turning into an alien..."
The two children clung to each other in fear. Xu Huo went over to examine her wounds and found two gaps in her calf, jaggedly torn by bites. The poison had entered there and spread throughout her body.
Pushing the hair sticking to her face aside, she revealed black and blue lines under her chin and behind her ears. Her eyes were red, bulging, and her expression was abnormal.
The female player grabbed his hand, "Please, do it quickly. I don’t want to eat people..."
Xu Huo pulled away from her and took an antitoxin injection from the luggage compartment, adjusted the dose, and injected it into her arm.
"It’s no use, I’ve already taken antitoxin..." The female player’s eyes moved, staring straight out the window.
"This is the sixth floor. Given a player’s physical condition, unless you dive headfirst, jumping won’t kill you right away. If you break bones and can’t stand or walk, the aliens, attracted by the scent of blood, will quickly come and feast on you. If you’re lucky, you might even get to see your own insides being torn out," Xu Huo said without looking up.
The female player whipped her head around, staring intensely at him.
But Xu Huo didn’t look at her. He brushed her hair to her back and pulled open her collar to check, "The poison is being neutralized."
The female player was stunned for a moment, then took out a mirror and saw the black and blue lines on her neck actually retreating!
"Your antitoxin can neutralize alien poison? You’re Xu Huo!" she was quick to realize Xu Huo’s identity.
"You’re lucky to have run into me," Xu Huo glanced at her, "Consider yourself a test subject. If my antidote works, then the Special Defense Department should be able to develop an antitoxin. Those poisoned in the heavy rain won’t all have to die."
The female player was initially overjoyed, but then her expression fell again. Before coming here, her companions intending to buy time or prevent themselves from mutating had chosen to self-destruct.
"Why not hide in the game?" Xu Huo said, "In such a situation, a few players can’t change much. Entering the dungeons at least allows the Special Defense Department to retain some strength."
"If we intended to hide, we wouldn’t have shown up here today," the female player quickly recollected herself, her eyes resolute.
After a pause, she added, "Thank you. I never thought I could be saved."
Xu Huo said, "Just think of it as good people getting good rewards."
"Sister!" Two children threw themselves into the woman player’s arms; her eyes turned red as she hugged them, "I’m just lucky, everyone else has sacrificed..."
After the Heavy Rain, it was hard to say how many of the players from the Special Defense Department who used to fight side by side were still alive.
She clutched the two children and asked Xu Huo with beseeching eyes, "Do you have any extra antitoxin?"
"A few antitoxin shots won’t make a difference." Xu Huo met her gaze for two seconds, voicing the harsh truth, "The rain will eventually contaminate the city’s tap water."
With tens of millions of people, calling it a drop in the bucket was the most optimistic way to describe it.
"Beep beep!" A sound came from the signal receiver at the woman player’s waist; she immediately perked up, "Someone is calling for help!"
The signal receiver was connected to her phone. After getting the location of the distress signal, she entrusted the two children to Xu Huo.
Xu Huo did not stop her but said, "You might not be able to help much if you go now."
The woman player smiled, her pale face brightened by the light of conviction, and then she threw herself into the rain, undeterred.
The two children cried, wanting to follow her. Xu Huo caught them and made several calls to Zheng Liang and others to confirm their location, intending to take the children there.
However, when he came out holding the children, after only walking two streets, he saw the woman player’s body.
She lay on the ground, her lifeless face smeared with mud and water, a cut on her neck still oozing blood.
Raising his hand, Shelter 101 appeared beside him. Xu Huo put the two children inside and closed the door, then took out a piece of clothing to cover the woman player’s face.
At that moment, less than a hundred meters away, two players were hiding in a shop. They had already launched an attack moments before; a blade that flew out had been aimed at Xu Huo’s neck but was inadvertently blocked by Shelter 101. It also obscured Xu Huo, so from their angle, they could only see clothing being laid over the woman player’s head.
"I told you to be careful. Don’t act without certainty," the shorter player said urgently. "You can tell that he hasn’t been hurt at all, which means he’s no simple character. Since the sneak attack failed, we’ve most likely been spotted. Let’s get out of here quickly!"
The taller player next to him was casually rummaging through the woman player’s belongings, taking his time before saying, "Thought we found a fat sheep, but it turns out she was poor as well. No wonder they blew up the Special Defense Department building—if the players underneath have such meager items, how could they amount to anything!"
The shorter player kept his eyes on the suddenly appeared metal shelter, urging his companion to leave, but the taller player clearly didn’t want to, greedily eyeing Shelter 101, "That must be something good..."
However, before he could finish speaking, Xu Huo appeared behind them, his expression icy, "Good things are good things, but I’m afraid you won’t live to take them."
With a swift strike to the throat, the taller player collapsed to the ground, clutching his bleeding neck. The shorter player tried to flee, but only took a few steps before a beam surged from the ground and split him in half. Xu Huo, who had just been behind him, was now standing at the entrance of the shop, in front of him.
Flicking the blood off his shoes, Xu Huo returned to the rain and moved the woman player’s body to a clean indoor area before departing.
Along the way, he nonchalantly killed a few players taking advantage of the chaos. Xu Huo handed the children over to Zheng Liang and then dialed Nie Xuan’s number, "Is there a reservoir near the Special Defense Department Headquarters?"
