Chapter 271: Chapter 271: The Labyrinth Abyss That Connects to Different Space
The Giant Magic Cube was an entirely different space. As soon as Xu Huo walked in, his vision was consumed by pure darkness, rendering him completely blind to his surroundings. After taking two steps forward, he suddenly stepped into emptiness and nearly fell.
"Be careful, there’s nothing in front," he called back to warn Yan Jiayu.
"The ground is moving," Yan Jiayu said from the darkness, but her voice suddenly trailed away, as if pulled behind him.
Just as they wondered what was happening, two beams of light shone down from above, directly illuminating their faces.
Squinting his eyes, Xu Huo quickly adapted to the bright light before him. He turned his head slightly and found that Yan Jiayu was now at least twenty meters away from him, and beneath her feet was no longer flat ground but a cylindrical column, just big enough for a person to stand on. However, as the light shone down, the column began to shrink.
Under Xu Huo’s feet was a similar situation, a circular column large enough for two feet, which in the blink of an eye shrank to the size of a fist, leaving him barely able to keep one foot anchored to it!
As the columns continued to show signs of shrinking, another beam of light suddenly lit up in front of them, revealing a floating metal Magic Cube, and one of the cube’s inclined sharp edges had been cut to create a fairly large flat surface. He leaped onto it.
Once he landed on it, the cube swayed left and right under disturbance, but it quickly stabilized again. At this point, a Magic Puppet appeared with a loud "bang," it was a doll-like clown waving a Magic Wand, cheerily saying, "Welcome to the Magic Cube Maze. I am your Interrogation Officer ’Smiley Face’."
"I know you have many questions, but I don’t like answering other people’s questions, so I’ll only allow you to ask a total of three questions, including this question-and-answer game. You may now begin," it said.
"What are the rules of the game in the Magic Cube Maze?" Xu Huo spoke up.
"It’s quite simple," Smiley Face waved effortlessly in the air, and a puppet cube with a missing corner like the one beside him appeared. Touching it with the Magic Wand, it said, "The effects of each Cube Column can only be maintained for three minutes. After three minutes, within ten seconds, the cube will return to its original state, that is, the flat surface will disappear, and it will revert back to a sharp edge."
"However, you don’t have to worry too much. Every thirty seconds, at least six Magic Cubes will appear in the places illuminated by the light. Whether or not you can grab one depends on yourselves," it explained.
"Every ten minutes, I will ask a question, and the guest on the column illuminated by light can buzz in. If you answer correctly, you will pass the question-and-answer game smoothly. However, if you fail, you will stay in this Dark Space forever."
"Of course, you cannot leave the Magic Cube for more than thirty seconds at a time, or you’ll lose the chance to answer," it added.
Having finished, Smiley Face closed its mouth, seemingly unwilling to say more.
Looking over at Yan Jiayu, she said, "There are two questions left, you go ahead and ask first."
Xu Huo turned to the clown again, "How many people can the Magic Cube Maze accommodate at most for the question-and-answer game at one time?"
"Fifteen people," Smiley Face maintained its smile, "By the way, there are twelve people now."
"During the game, do all the Magic Cubes consistently maintain a floating state without falling?" Yan Jiayu continued to ask.
"Of course, otherwise, why would it be called the Magic Cube Maze?" Smiley Face then spun in place, burst into a spray of fireworks, and disappeared into the darkness.
In a moment, five more beams of light shone down. Before the light even reached the Magic Cubes, seven silhouettes burst from the darkness, each rushing toward the five Cube Columns.
Two of the Cube Columns were targeted by two people each. One pair, obviously partners, tacitly chose to place one foot each on the same column. However, the other pair wasn’t so lucky. They had learned the rules beforehand and, therefore, the moment they faced each other, one person’s neck was sliced through. Their body split in two and fell into the darkness below. The other person successfully took possession of the Cube Column.
With one player dead and two sharing a Magic Cube, the remaining three should have been enough for the other Cube Columns. Unexpectedly, one of the illuminated Cube Columns did not have a flat surface but sharp edges, and the overconfident player who leaped onto it couldn’t stand on the point. They slipped down the slanted side of the Magic Cube, attempting to catch themselves with their weapon. But the edges of the Cube seemed to provide no grip, leaving no mark even when struck with a blade.
"Ah!" The player fell from the Magic Cube with a cry of terror, and as the darkness below devoured their body, their screams abruptly ceased.
"Isn’t there a deep abyss below?" Yan Jiayu looked down.
The player who killed for the Cube Column stroked his stubbled chin and chuckled, "Naive. This is a Different Space, beyond the explanation of cliffs and abysses. Falling off a cliff or into an abyss, you might climb back up, but falling into a Different Space? Who knows what might happen."
"Anyway, worrying about what’s below is less important than caring for your comrades in the darkness."
Yan Jiayu immediately looked around, "Are there still people around us?"
"Of course," the bearded player said. "The number of players in the Magic Cube Maze isn’t fixed. When someone dies, someone else enters. Who knows how many have come in now. Better stay alert."
Xu Huo withdrew his gaze, instead paying attention to the sounds around them.
The joker said there were twelve players, which means, aside from the seven standing in the beams of light and the two that died, at least three more players were lurking in the darkness, assuming no new players had entered.
People in the light were visible and audible, but he couldn’t sense any trace of life in the darkness. Clearly, the darkness of the Magic Cube Maze had the ability to block sight and sound.
At least six Cube Columns would appear where the light beams struck, but not every illuminated Magic Cube would present a flat surface. Moreover, to answer the joker’s questions, one had to stand on a Cube Column, meaning those who encountered Sharp-edged Magic Cubes couldn’t answer questions and faced high risks, as only those illuminated by light could respond.
Although each Cube Column lasted for three minutes, to answer questions, one had to be on a column bathed in light, so even before the Cubes reset, others might strive to seize a new one.
Unable to determine if the players in the darkness could see those in the light, but it was at least worth verifying if tools were effective.
Xu Huo took out the Crimson Sword, and casually swung it toward the darkness. To his surprise, the Sword Qi Light Screen disappeared upon touching the edge of the light—the properties of the item didn’t work in the darkness.
Having confirmed this, he relaxed slightly and nodded to Yan Jiayu.
The first thirty seconds had passed, and the original seven beams of light went out. At the same time, another six beams lit up at different spots.
The players on the Cube Columns sprang into action. Xu Huo turned toward the nearest Cube Column, and as he charged over, two other players also emerged under the beams of light. Dodging a heavy hammer swung by one of them, he raised his sword to strike the player to his left, but the opponent blocked the attack with an arm guard, and spit out a Hidden Weapon at him!
