Chapter 272: Children Throw Candies When They Fight
Chapter 272: Chapter 272: Children Throw Candies When They Fight
The bean-green object only revealed its true form as it flew close to Xu Huo—it was actually a small mechanical fly! As the fly buzzed through the air, it emitted a burst of red smoke. Xu Huo frowned, stepped back into the darkness, and landed back on the original Cube Column. Seeing that the third player had accidentally inhaled some of the smoke and his complexion changed drastically, he quickly withdrew from the competition.
"You think you can compete with me!" The player who had successfully taken the newly appeared Cube Column looked around triumphantly and allowed the mechanical fly to circle around him.
Xu Huo gave the delicate machine another glance but made no other move, standing on the cube to observe his surroundings.
Although he still couldn’t see or hear anything else in the darkness, as expected, the areas lit by the beams were perfectly clear, even in the darkness, and he could hear their conversations.
The darkness severed the senses, rendered items useless, yet everything was normal where there was light.
"Xu Huo?" Yan Jiayu, who had successfully taken a new Cube Column, called out in his direction. She grew anxious when she received no response.
Xu Huo tried to respond to her but, obviously, his voice did not reach her.
"There’s no use yelling." The bearded player said, "We can’t hear voices in the darkness, but the Cube Column’s effect lasts for three minutes. Your friend should be alright."
Yan Jiayu nodded and couldn’t help asking, "How long have you been here? Is it almost time for the question?"
The bearded player didn’t answer her, and the other players remained silent too. Everyone wanted to answer the question and leave as soon as possible, and telling other players the timing of the next question would undoubtedly increase their own difficulty.
The second thirty-second period ended quickly, and this time Xu Huo took aim at a cube to his front right and leaped onto it. Since it was a far jump, the cube swayed significantly back and forth, and he steadied himself with his right hand on the guitar strings. However, as soon as he straightened up, a candy projectile suddenly flew out of the darkness. He caught it with a backhand grab, but his body swayed again.
Frowning in the direction the candy had come from, he said, "Friend, answering the question is inevitable sooner or later. Even without me, another player will come in. There’s no need to fight for the Cube Column in such a way. If you set this precedent, it will only delay others."
The duration of a Cube Column was three minutes, and at least six Magic Cubes appeared every half minute. He had just successfully used the guitar strings, which meant that items could be used normally in the areas illuminated by the light, so the limit of fifteen people answering the question was manageable.
In the previous round, the players only fought when vying for the Cube Columns and didn’t resort to attacks in the shadows, implicitly adhering to this rule which benefitted everyone.
However, the person who had attacked him apparently didn’t take his words to heart, as the response was several candy projectiles, comparable to bullets!
After dodging repeatedly, Xu Huo took out a glass jar and, grabbing a handful of candies, shot them back the way they came. Then he called out into the darkness, "If you want a war of attrition, that’s fine by me. I have several jars of candy."
This time, the other side did not throw any more candy.
"Pfft!" Yan Jiayu couldn’t help but laugh. "Only children throw candy in a fight."
Another thirty seconds passed, and this time Xu Huo did not rush to a new Magic Cube. Instead, he quickly grabbed a handful of candies and threw them in the direction from which the attack had come!
"Ugh!" A silhouette emerged in the light beams from that direction, but its pace was disrupted. One foot landed on the edge of the Cube Column, and the already precarious cube tilted heavily on one side.
Dropping off-balance, the player stretched out to grab the edge of the cube, managing to delay the fall for a moment before quickly using a rope to bind himself together with the cube, halting the downward slide.
But before he could breathe a sigh of relief, an apple flew out from the darkness and hit him right on the forehead!
Apples, of course, couldn’t cause much damage, but the person, shaken by the impact, swayed again, and the Magic Cube moved with it, the barely fitted rope sliding downwards.
"I curse you..." The curse faded into the darkness along with the falling player.
"Hey, hey, let’s all calm down a bit!" a female player standing in the beam hurriedly said, "Attacking each other is no good for anyone. If you want to fight, wait until we get out of here!"
Another player not far from her also said, "Exactly, I definitely won’t attack others in the dark. Please don’t trouble me either. I just want to get out of this cursed place as soon as possible!"
The other players standing in the beams remained silent, but their expressions became more guarded.
One could roughly deduce who the assaulter was from their position, but the thrower of the candy and the apple were clearly not the same person. Whether it was an ally or someone taking advantage of the situation, at least one thing was clear, not everyone was just trying to pass through quickly. There were indeed people looking to harvest the lives of other players.
Xu Huo was in the darkness, unable to see Yan Jiayu, who was also in the dark. He roughly estimated the positions where the Cube Column had appeared in the past few rounds, and jumped onto the Cube Column that a player had just missed five seconds before the beam disappeared.
Darkness enveloped the space once more, and new beams of light illuminated, but this time the clown who announced the rules also appeared!
"Ten minutes are up!" the clown jingled the Magic Wand, "Now it’s time to answer questions. During question time, the illumination time of the Cube Column will double. Please pay attention to the questions, guests in the light!"
"Wait, that’s not right. It hasn’t been ten minutes since the last question!" a chubby player said, wiping the sweat from his forehead.
"Shut up!" The other five players in the beam glared at him in unison, while the bearded player hurriedly said to the clown, "Please state the question."
The clown, however, didn’t seem to be in a rush and instead answered the chubby player’s question with a Maneki-neko (beckoning cat) gesture by his ear and giggled, "Because my timing is off."
Xu Huo’s brow twitched slightly, if the timing was off, it meant there could be an opportunity to answer a question without waiting for three rounds of Cube Column restoration.
"Here’s the question. How many Floating Cubes are there in this Magic Cube space? Start buzzing in!"
"A hundred." A young player standing closest to the clown confidently said.
"Bang, bang!" The clown ran over, circling him with two sparklers, and handed him a little cap, "Correct answer!"
Right after a swing of the Magic Wand, the young player vanished from the Cube Column.
"What kind of question is that!" the chubby player exclaimed, "It’s pitch black everywhere here, how can you possibly count the number of Magic Cubes!"
"It can be calculated." The bearded player said a bit annoyed, "Based on the dimensions of the Giant Magic Cube and the gaps between the Floating Cubes, anyone with basic arithmetic can figure it out."
"Exactly!" The clown gave a thumbs up, and then said to the other players, "Keep it up, everyone! I’ll be back very soon!"
After he finished speaking, he once again vanished into the darkness, and simultaneously, several beams of light shone on the new Magic Cubes!
