Chapter 1138: Chapter 1138: The Disappeared Flight
Father Xu was delighted upon receiving the phone call and honestly reported their situation. They indeed had experienced several kidnappings, but the ones who were kidnapped weren’t from the Xu Family but from the Yu Family instead.
Not being Xu Huo’s direct relatives, they couldn’t enter the confidential and secure area not open to the public. After the last Black Rain incident involving the kidnapping of Tongtong, Xu Huo’s half-brother from the same father, the Xu Family and Lady Fang were relocated.
Since then, the Family of Xu rarely ventured out, so even if someone wanted to target them, there was no opportunity. Instead, it was Ms. Yu’s maternal family who were unlucky, especially Yu Qingqing who loved causing trouble outside, drawing lots of problems, all of which were eventually smoothed over by the Special Defense Department, including several kidnapping incidents.
"Is everyone at home okay?" Xu Huo inquired.
"We’re all fine. It’s almost New Year’s Eve; are you coming home to visit?" Father Xu said, "Your mother and I miss you a lot."
Xu Huo acknowledged, then after hanging up the phone, he booked a plane ticket—since there are no direct flights to Jing City’s airport at present, he could only fly to a newly built airport outside the city and then drive into Jing City.
Now that the locations of existing random instances have been officially disclosed, traveling outside is relatively safe. After several months of efforts by the Special Defense Department, Ting City has stabilized and mostly returned to regular order, though few people are out at night; it’s still very safe during the day.
On his ride to the airport, Xu Huo took the chance to observe the current state of Ting City. While largely unchanged on the whole, it was now common to see metal barriers erected outside buildings. Apart from patrol vehicles, temporary alarm devices were set up every twenty meters on streets for emergency assistance.
Newly increased were various player training institutions—truly meant for training players. With the government advocating universal player participation, anyone willing would try at the Special Defense Department. Many failed, but the number of those surviving was also immense. The department couldn’t manage all, publishing only some fundamental knowledge. As they didn’t cover adapting to props and bodily changes, training institutions emerged to mainly teach new players about instance experiences and combat knowledge.
Following a period of chaos, Country X seemed to be evolving in a promising direction.
Even the taxi driver seemed vigilant, having already probed where he was from on the road.
"I was originally from Jing City, but later moved to work in Ting City. This time, I plan on going back home for New Year’s," Xu Huo said with a smile.
The driver, slightly envious, said: "Now the state advocates staying put, there aren’t many flights, and with players frequently boarding, it hardly gets to our turn, ordinary people like us. I’m afraid of encountering a new random instance if driving myself, but you still can go home for the New Year, that’s great."
Xu Huo handed a lollipop to a child in the back seat, "Things will get better."
"That’s right!" The driver perked up, "Although I have to bring my child along for rides, it’s still much better than abroad. I saw on the news that the pandemic is still rampant there, and players don’t follow the law like ours in Country X. They constantly clash with the government; robbing banks and cash transports is trivial for them. That’s really no way to live!"
"And there are small countries that have lost their capitals, the entire population becoming refugees, driven everywhere, many dying from illness or starvation... I mean, what era is this, and there are still people dying of hunger..."
Listening to the driver ramble on about news he read online, Xu Huo soon arrived at the airport. However, the driver stopped quite far away. "Sorry, young man, we can’t get through up front."
Xu Huo glanced aside and noticed a convoy had blocked the airport gate, with players clearing the way and later on airport vehicles being forced aside.
Xu Huo paid the fare and smoothly took his backpack from the luggage compartment and got out.
Like him, several others also got out of their cars. Observing the number of players around the convoy, they thought it better to err on the side of caution and skirted around to enter the airport.
The convoy was also for players, yet it was unclear which figures they were for; the escorts leading the way included four players, with the airport providing special personnel for reception.
"Even after evolution, the rich are still the rich," a passerby commented sourly.
"You better keep it down, in case someone hears and comes back to teach you a lesson—there’s nothing you can do as players aren’t arrested for assault now," another player joked.
Most of those boarding the flight were players, some in groups, some solo. They didn’t know each other but could still exchange a few jokes, and some approached Xu Huo for a chat.
The airplane interior had been modified, with parts not subdivided, allowing everyone to sit together. However, selecting seats caused a minor conflict when a young man wearing sunglasses occupied the front four rows and prevented other players from sitting down.
The plane wasn’t full, and there were seats available at the back, but the attitude upset some, leading to a physical altercation, though it was quickly stopped by the safeguarding officer who arrived.
The safeguarding officer, also a player tasked with flight missions, mediated, and the player who wanted to sit forward conceded, "Some nerve, I wouldn’t want to sit with someone like you anyway!"
"Say that again." The young player surrounded by bodyguards stood up, removed his sunglasses, and turned around to face the speaker.
Having abundant resources made evolution easier and armament stronger. The complaining player clearly understood this, his gaze shifting away after a brief eye contact.
With one party stepping down, the conflict dissipated, and the plane soon took off.
Xu Huo was seated in a rear position, wearing an eye mask to rest.
During about nine days, the King Fungus had digested the virulent poison in his body, the mycelium growing batch by batch. If he hadn’t held onto the Nüwa Stone, he might’ve not survived this ordeal.
But the incident had been a wake-up call; he needed to be more careful in the future, and it was time to upgrade his protective suit.
However, currently available game suits couldn’t protect against projectiles formed from spatial rays, unless specially customized and requiring materials with special properties.
Right now, Artifact Makers in Zone 014 wouldn’t suffice. He remembered the business card given by the Holy Sword Society; perhaps he should visit that Artifact Maker—there were no third-party restrictions in-game on customizing props, and it wasn’t uncommon for Artifact Makers to take player materials and flee... He’d have to wait until reaching Zone 011.
After topping up on the Self-Healing Potion, he leaned back in his seat, gradually drifting off to sleep.
Meanwhile, chaos erupts in the ground control tower because shortly after the plane took off, while still visible to the naked eye under clear skies, it suddenly disappeared!
"Control tower calling Jing Aviation 6538!"
"Control tower calling Jing Aviation 6538!"
"Control tower calling Jing Aviation 6538, please respond if you hear this!"
