Chapter 1137: Chapter 1137: Matters of Zone 014
Players remained silent, but several team leaders were furious. The leader from Lu City immediately said, "Just because you..."
Before he could finish the word ’you’, two more players on either side of the conference table were killed, their blood splattering on several team leaders’ faces, probably facing the threat directly from players. Their expressions turned ugly but not as arrogant as before, otherwise, once Xu Huo killed someone and escaped into the game, their deaths would be in vain.
That was the reasoning.
"Players can escape into the game, but I’m afraid you gentlemen won’t be able to leave this room," Xu Huo said. "I advise you to think before you speak."
"And the rest of you," he glanced over the players present, "had better not make any sudden moves, or you won’t get out of this room either."
The conference room went silent.
No player attempted any further actions, nor did anyone try to open the door. They kept pressing their emergency contact devices, but to no avail. From inside the conference room, there was no response or noise from outside, and it was unclear whether the Ting City Special Defense Department had tacitly approved of Xu Huo’s actions.
"Do you really think you can kill all of us?" challenged the leader from Lu City, his tone tinged with skepticism and provocation.
"You can try if you don’t believe it." Xu Huo didn’t make any threats, just pointed again to the pen and paper on the table, "You can leave as long as you leave your names here."
The team leaders had no choice but to sit down at the conference table and pick up the pen, when Director Zhang suddenly asked, "Chief Wu will have to take responsibility for this."
"The internal affairs of your Special Defense Department have nothing to do with me," Xu Huo responded indifferently. "I am returning to Ting City because I enter the game from here. The patience I showed today is because I’m in a good mood."
"Ultimately, this matter doesn’t concern you much," Director Zhang tried to save some face, "If we had known it was you, we wouldn’t have come."
Xu Huo didn’t say anything more, just tapped his finger lightly on the desk as a sign of urgency.
Results matter foremost in any endeavor. Regardless of the reasons, it was the results that were definitive. Whether or not these people came for him, what difference does it make from players outside the district? The players of the Special Defense Department shouldn’t be too friendly towards their peers either.
Having delayed enough, and with no rescue coming from outside, Director Zhang and the others had no choice but to write their names on the paper under Xu Huo’s statement, "I will be staying here for at least a month this time and might contact you if needed," making adjustments as necessary.
After obtaining the list of names, Xu Huo deactivated the Spatial Barrier of the conference room, and Chief Wu who had been waiting outside hurried in. Seeing the corpses inside, Chief Wu’s eyelid twitched, but he heaved a sigh of relief seeing Director Zhang and others unharmed, and turned to speak with Xu Huo.
Xu Huo handed the lists over to him, and said, "Thanks to the Special Defense Department for offering protection when I was injured. These people leaked my information for some reason. Chief Wu might want to investigate it thoroughly, otherwise who would dare to come back in the future."
Upon seeing the names on the paper, Chief Wu’s expression darkened, "I will handle this matter. How are your injuries? Professor Lan and Professor Tang have come all the way from Jing City to check on you."
"No need," Xu Huo said. "I see the Special Defense Department is quite busy recently, so I won’t catch up with old friends."
After finishing his words, he headed outside, with Chief Wu quickly following him, "Why don’t you return to Jing City with Professor Lan and the others? Air travel is restricted lately, and it’s not convenient to travel anywhere."
Xu Huo declined and without even meeting with Professor Lan and others, he directly passed through the space and left the Special Defense Department Security Zone.
Chief Wu, with a dark expression and an unfriendly gaze towards Director Zhang and others whose complexions weren’t too good either, snorted coldly, "This isn’t over!"
The people from the Special Defense Department were unhappy, and so were Professor Lan and others who had come from afar. Before coming, they had harbored great hopes, especially Professor Lan. The number of players from Zone 014 involved in mental evolution experiments was too few, and each additional person was another sample. It could potentially help unravel some clues about evolution. Last time in Hua City, they couldn’t get a blood sample from Xu Huo, and this time he came specifically for that, but unexpectedly...
"Let’s stay for a day then head back," he told Tang Guangbo.
Tang Guangbo nodded, then brought up another matter, "We haven’t had the chance to tell him that his old residence has already been demolished."
...
Xu Huo stood in front of the unfinished new office building of the Special Defense Department, pausing for a moment before turning to find a place to charge his device.
After restarting his phone, the influx of new messages and call alerts lasted for a full minute.
The earliest message dated back to his departure from Zone 014, with Yuan Yao, Zhou Ning, and Gu Yu confirming his safety. Following which, messages from Shen Xin and Liu Jia—who had joined the Special Defense Department—came in, discussing instances and asking for his advice on how to clear them.
Liu Jia also mentioned Professor Han again.
Initially, when he disembarked from the initial screening train, Professor Han was wounded by an Alien and later taken away by the Special Defense Department for treatment. Shortly afterwards, news of his death was reported, but since joining the Special Defense Department, Liu Jia had come to suspect that Professor Han had not died—she had hinted this to Xu Huo twice before.
This time she explicitly mentioned human experimentation and in the end brought up that the Special Defense Department had secretly conducted a talent selection during which a colleague who worked alongside her was transferred and then went incommunicado. Both she and Shen Xin encountered similar situations, and it seemed Shen Xin had received more definitive information.
This wasn’t particularly surprising given the current situation in the Special Defense Department. Preparing ahead of time wasn’t a bad thing. During such times, only those absolutely loyal to the country could support the backbone of the Special Defense Department.
But human experimentation... Xu Huo furrowed his eyebrows.
He deleted Liu Jia’s message and skimmed through the lengthy novel-like text bombings from Yuan Yao, then looked at the message from Huang Junjie—there was cooperation between the First Association and the Special Defense Department, and internal staff had certain perks like access to instance strategies, hence their survival rate was also higher.
Huang Junjie was mainly contacting him due to Yu Qingqing, who is a cousin of his stepmother. In the instance, Yu Qingqing brutally killed three members of the First Association who were grouping to clear the instance, and she had been blacklisted by the First Association. Since Ting City is an important stronghold city for the First Association, letting him know meant to inform Yu Qingqing not to come to Ting City in the future, otherwise, she might be targeted for assassination.
Xu Huo skipped this message and likewise ignored the complaint text from Yu Qingqing.
Others, like Yan Jiayu and Zhou Ning, didn’t have much important matters, just asking if he was returning to Zone 014 or proposing to join instances together.
Apart from that, there were some invites to join Player Organizations and obvious phishing messages from unfamiliar numbers, which also included words like having kidnapped his family or friends, demanding him to show up at a certain place and time for an exchange.
Xu Huo made a call back to the Xu Family.
