Chapter 65: Ambush

The week had flown by, and soon Friday arrived... Kurt hadn’t shown up since the day his pursuit failed. And Lucien and his friends bought a lot of resources daily and sent most of them to William’s house.

Every day after school, they stopped by. Lucien used his inventory to take some of them to Nina’s house, where she was hiding them in a storage room no one in his house used. Afterward, Lucien would return to William’s house once more and help his friend organize his supplies. Only then would he fill his inventory with his items and leave.

At some point, one of them suggested they all gather in one place. But they all knew that convincing their parents or other adults to believe children’s chatter was impossible. So, everyone agreed to activate the radios as soon as everything started, and they even learned how to repair them in case the technology became a problem.

All food was also canned, dried, or preserved to prevent spoilage without proper refrigeration. There were some frivolous and superfluous items, such as chocolates, cookies, potato chips, and instant noodles, but everyone knew these things had a short shelf life, except for the instant noodles.

Of course, Lucien filled his inventory with hot and cold foods he’d ordered from a few restaurants, as after testing, he’d confirmed he could preserve the good stuff there. He simply promised his friends he’d bring some of this food to them when he could safely leave.

When Friday’s classes ended, the three of them left together again, planning to go to William’s house one last time. Since Saturday would be their last free day together, and Monday and Tuesday, everyone planned to skip classes to avoid attracting as much attention...

However, the three friends’ plans for the day were interrupted when, not far from school, five boys were waiting for them. This time, not only were Kurt and his three classmates there, but there was also an older teenage boy who looked similar to Kurt and even had dyed blue hair like his.

William recognized his attackers from the other day and froze in place. Nina, noticing the aggressive way the boys surrounded them, began to tremble and approached Lucien, grabbing his arm for protection.

Unlike his two friends, Lucien was also frightened but didn’t show it. The reason he was afraid wasn’t because of the extra-older boy, but because Kurt and his three friends were holding huge pieces of metal and wood as weapons...

Kurt stood out in front of the group, limping, and smiled. He said,

"Come on, Lucien, you can run... I’m sure you can escape. But the fat guy and the girl won’t make it very far..."

"If you want money, you can take everything we have, but let those two go, and I’ll stay to solve any problems you have..."

"Hahaha."

"Oh, he thinks he can still negotiate!"

"All the money already belongs to us anyway..."

Lucien tried to talk some logic and reason into Kurt’s head, but it was quite obvious that they had all come here for revenge today... If he hadn’t put aside his fear and fought for real, then even his friends would be in grave danger today. Lucien then lowered his voice and said to his friends,

"William, I need you to hold at least one of them back. Can I count on you?"

William, still very scared, realized that if he didn’t fight, everyone here would be beaten, including Nina. So he simply nodded to Lucien.

"Nina, when I say 3, run as fast as you can and get help from an adult..." After saying this, Lucien made her let go of his arm and pulled her behind him.

"1, 2, 3 Go!"

When Kurt and the others saw Lucien whisper and then count to 3, they were left speechless when William jumped on top of one of Kurt’s followers and fell to the ground with him, using his weight to pin him down.

Meanwhile, Nina ran off Lucien’s back, leaving the circle of bullies in the same direction William had attacked and creating a gap. Kurt, seeing the situation, shouted:

"Shit, catch the girl! Don’t let her get away!"

The two remaining boys ran after Nina, and Lucien got in the way of one of them, kicking him hard in the leg. There was a loud crack, and the boy quickly fell to the ground in tears.

"AHHHH MY LEG!"

At the same time, Lucien jumped like William, grabbing the second boy and falling to the ground with him.

In the shock of being knocked down, the boy didn’t let go of the piece of metal he was holding, trying to keep it in his hands, and this allowed Lucien to punch him repeatedly in the face, causing blood to gush from his nose.

But this was a fight against a group, and before they knew it, the older boy kicked William in the ribs, knocking him off the boy he was pinning down. Kurt slammed his metal bat into Lucien’s back, also knocking him off the other boy.

William fell to the ground groaning, clutching his ribs, and Lucien, who had been knocked down by the impact of the blow, quickly got up, barely feeling the pain in his back, and glared at Kurt with angry eyes... Lucien’s adrenaline was high at this point, and he couldn’t hold back any longer.

"Son of a bitch!"

He jumped on top of Kurt, knocking him to the ground, and began punching him with all his level 1 mutant strength.

Kurt barely reacted as the blows rained down on his face, leaving his eyes swollen, his mouth and nose bloodied, and Lucien even saw Kurt spit out a few teeth. But no matter how injured Kurt already was, Lucien seemed to have lost control and had no plans to stop hitting him...

Just then, a strong hand grabbed him by the neck, pulling him off Kurt... It was the older boy who spoke for the first time, looking at the beaten Kurt on the ground:

"You and your friends are pathetic, little brother..."

Lucien, who regained consciousness after being choked, looked at his attacker and tried to remove his hand. But just as he was about to do so, Kurt’s brother’s other fist landed on his stomach, knocking the air from his lungs and causing him to lose his grip.

Meanwhile, the first boy William had knocked down was already back on his feet. He was furious at being knocked down by him. He grabbed the bat from the ground and hit William, who was still down with his hands on his ribs, in the head.

"Pow!"

With just one blow, William stopped moving, and Lucien, who was lying on the ground not far away, saw everything happen.

"WILLIAM!!!"

As Lucien screamed, he got up and ran toward his friend. The older boy was also startled by what had happened. He quickly picked up the bloodied Kurt from the ground and ran away.

The boy who attacked William realized he had crossed the line and helped the boy with the bloody nose run away from the scene.

Leaving the boy with the injured leg behind, but even with the broken leg, he realized the trouble they were in. Wiping away his tears and enduring the pain, he got up and also ran limping.

When Lucien reached William, he saw that his friend was pale, bleeding from the head, and breathing with difficulty. But unlike what it seemed from a distance, he was still somewhat conscious.

"Hey William, hold on, don’t fall asleep! William, come on, friend, hold on!"

Nina soon returned, her eyes brimming with tears. She began to tremble, seeing the scene of Lucien with his school uniform covered in blood and William nearly losing consciousness.

"I’m sorry, Lucien, sniff, I couldn’t find anyone, but I found a phone and called the police..."

Lucien ignored her and began to think about how he could help his seriously injured friend.
