Chapter 65: Having fun

The lobby of the hotel was an opulent sight to behold. Tall, elegant pillars adorned with intricate carvings stretched towards the high ceiling, where a dazzling crystal chandelier sparkled with a thousand lights. The marble floor, polished to a mirror-like sheen, reflected the grandeur of the surroundings. Plush velvet sofas with golden accents beckoned guests to sink into their comfort, while tasteful art pieces adorned the walls, adding an air of sophistication.

Chris and Rachel strolled through the lobby, taking in the breathtaking beauty of the place. The hotel exuded luxury in every corner, creating an atmosphere of elegance and indulgence.

"Chris, this place is beyond incredible! Your family must be so proud to own such a magnificent hotel. It looked nothing like this when I first came here last year!"

He, too, was proud of his parents. But on the economic aspect, he wondered if this was a great idea. They had been able to buy a hotel and furnish it to their standards, even though this was not an economic area and they wouldn’t be able to make much from it.

They made their way to the front desk. Rachel dressed beautifully, but he, on the other hand, was dressed in his usual odd clothing that didn’t befit the place. But there was something about people born into wealth. It didn’t matter what they were wearing. They felt like they belonged anywhere. Unfortunately, it wasn’t always like that. Some of the hotel staff eyed Chris’s casual attire with disdain. Undeterred, Chris casually tapped on the counter to get the attention of one of the front desk Receptionists, asking in a polite but firm tone,

"Excuse me, could I speak with the manager, please?"

Receptionist 1 raised an eyebrow and exchanged subtle glances with Receptionist 2, who suppressed a condescending smirk. They reluctantly summoned the manager.

"May I know for what reason you intend to meet the manager, sir?" The first Receptionist asked.

"It’s a personal issue. Please let him know Christopher Owen is here."

The lady tried to suppress her laugh as she said, "I’m sorry, but we cannot simply have the manager come here for you. If there is a message you intend to give him, he’ll appreciate it if I pass it along to him instead."

She tried to sound polite, but it was obvious she was being very rude and trying to dismiss him.

Rachel frowned in annoyance and was about to speak, but Chris held her, stopping her, and then he faced the lady again.

"I’d like to meet the manager. Give him a call." He repeated.

The lady was obviously fed up with them, but she managed a smile on her face as she said, "I believe I have patiently explained how that can work. So can you step aside for a moment while I attend to the next customer?"

Chris scoffed in disbelief. Well, this was interesting.

He stepped aside just as he had been told, and Rachel looked at him in confusion, wondering why he wasn’t saying anything about her rude behaviour.

Chris took out his phone, and after lazily scrolling through it for a few seconds, he dialled his father’s number. Thankfully, his father seemed to be enjoying the holiday too, because he answered the call almost immediately.

"I’m at the hotel, and I just experienced some unpleasant behaviour from a few staff members. Are these the kind of people who work for your organizations?" Chris asked calmly in a typical spoilt brat tone.

As Chris spoke, the expressions of the offending staff members turned from arrogance to confusion when they heard him. They probably thought he was making things up, especially when the call ended almost immediately and he just stood there until the middle-aged manager showed up, looking breathless.

It wasn’t difficult to know he was the manager. His eyes were darting around until they fell on Chris, and Chris smiled at him.

The man quickly approached Chris and Rachel, looking nervous, while the Receptionists were filled with sheer panic.

"Mr Owen?" The manager asked.

"The junior," Chris answered softly.

"I had no idea you were coming today. I was told to watch out for you whenever. I apologize for any inconvenience, Mr. Owen. Please let us know if there’s anything we can do to make your stay more enjoyable. Shall we?" He gestured ahead to lead them, but Chris shook his head, waving his index finger sideways to show that wasn’t happening just yet.

"Actually, I’d like to discuss the behaviour of those staff members who treated me poorly. This level of unprofessionalism is not something that should be tolerated."

Chris turned to look at the ladies, who looked horrified by how the situation had turned. It couldn’t merely be a coincidence that his last name was Owen too, right?

The manager also looked at them with harsh glares before he turned back to face Chris, looking slightly embarrassed.

"Mr. Owen, I sincerely apologize for the actions of our staff. Rest assured, immediate action will be taken."

"Good. Cos’ I expect nothing less." He looked at the two ladies, who had tears in their eyes now, before he added, "Don’t just fire them. I believe they’ve learned their lessons." He said this before walking ahead smugly.

"I almost forgot the kind of influence you had!" Rachel said in awe, and he shrugged as though it was not a big deal.

After the manager was done with whatever instructions he had for the staff, he hurried to catch up with them and smiled apologetically as he said, "Again, I apologize for the inconvenience. Please enjoy your time here with complimentary access to all the amenities, and if there’s anything else we can do, please don’t hesitate to ask." He said this before handing Chris a black card. "All staff members have been informed. You may do as you please."

Chris received the card and turned to give Rachel a wink.

With the matter resolved, Chris and Rachel had the time of their lives exploring the hotel. They lounged by the stunning rooftop pool, enjoyed the spa, and indulged in the gourmet restaurant’s delectable offerings. He had come here to cheer up Rachel, but it also improved his mood, and he was able to have fun. It had been a while.

Rachel was overjoyed, and Chris was happy to help capture the moments on her camera, taking photos of Rachel all around the hotel, her happiness shining through in every shot.

Despite the fun they were both having, he could not stop imagining that Sky was here right now. It would have been nice if he had been here. Just having fun and enjoying a life of luxury, even if it was for one day.

Or maybe he could make it happen? I mean, he was Christopher Owen. He only needed to draft out a solid plan and give Sky the time of his life.

"Why do you look like you are dreaming of bringing a lover here to experience all of this too?"

Rachel asked, breaking into his thoughts before she took a sip of her wine.

He looked up at her at once. He had indeed been thinking about bringing someone, but it was Sky. Not a lover. And it was just to appreciate him for being a nice friend. Nothing more.

He wanted to explain this to her when his phone vibrated with an incoming call. He glanced at the screen and saw that it was Wilson calling.

It was rare for him to randomly call instead of text.

He picked it up, and Wilson’s enthusiastic voice filtered into his ears.

"Chris! Guess where I am?"

"How am I supposed to guess that?"

"I’m in town! I just arrived at your family’s hotel, so you better get your ass down here!"

"Wait, what? You are here? Like here?!" Chris asked in surprise and began to look around.

"I’m checking in!" Wilson announced.

"No way! That’s amazing! What are the odds? We’re actually at the hotel too! Rachel and I are having a great time here!" Chris said excitedly, hoping his friend was not pranking him.

"What the hell? You for real?" Wilson asked excitedly. "Where exactly are you? I hope you’re not messing with me."

"We’re at the dining area," Chris informed him and kept his eyes fixed on the door.

"Sounds perfect! See you guys soon!"

Chris hung up and turned to Rachel with a grin.

Chris hadn’t realized how much he missed his good friend until he saw him. Wilson was the first to pull him into a hug, and usually, he didn’t like hugs, but he welcomed this.

"You look awful, man! What is this?!" Wilson asked with amused horror as he looked closely at Chris after pulling away from the hug.

"Do not be silly, you idiot! What are you doing here?"

"It’s a public holiday, yo! Came to see you— oh, Pardon my manners. You must be Rachel? Of course you are! I have seen you before." Wilson said excitedly, extending a hand to her.

"It’s lovely to meet you, Wilson. Chris talks about you a lot." She said as she shook his hand.

"Oh... he does?" Wilson turned to Chris with a teasing smile.

"Stop lying, Rachel. He doesn’t need such flattery." Chris told her, making him laugh.

The three of them settled in at the table, and the conversation flowed effortlessly. But Chris was still suspicious about Wilson’s sudden appearance, and he didn’t push for an answer immediately.
