Chapter 50: Fight and curses
Chris sat up from Sky’s lap and hesitated before he answered the call. He was kind of uncomfortable with all their eyes on him, but he didn’t want to leave the room just because he wanted to answer the call.
Chris could guess that at this point, they were probably wondering what it was about him that he was not only with Rachel but also with Emily. The two most wanted girls in the school now. Oh, there was also Rain. And he didn’t need to look exceptionally great to have all these women around him. He was Chris, after all.
He answered the call.
"I thought you’d have called me by now," Emily said.
She had a pretty voice. It sounded soft, too. He imagined she was lying peacefully on her bed.
Since they exchanged numbers that night, yesterday was the first time she reached out to him, and she sent a message that simply read, "I hope you saved my number—Emily."
He hadn’t even bothered to respond to the message. He simply saved it, and that was it. He hadn’t thought she’d even give him a call.
"I didn’t know I was supposed to call you," Chris said in a tone that made it obvious he wasn’t as interested as she was hoping he would be. "Didn’t you take my number because you wanted to call me?"
Chris could see how surprised Noel and Henry were. They didn’t even bother to try and pretend like they weren’t giving their entire attention to his call. Collins was also staring at him, but when Chris looked in his direction, Collins looked away and focused on his book.
Weirdo.
As for Sky, he was looking at Chris so intensely with furrowed brows, which made him unconsciously shift away from him and pay attention to Emily instead.
Emily was laughing. "You’re... interesting."
She said to him.
"Am I?"
"You are. So I guess I’ll be seeing you tomorrow, right?"
"Tomorrow?" Chris wondered when they had planned to meet each other tomorrow.
"I saw your name on the list of racers. You are more impressive by the day."
Oh! That had skipped through his mind for a moment. It was tomorrow!
"If you’ll be coming early, it means I’ll meet you early. Do not make me wait for long. And... be careful tomorrow."
He absentmindedly replied, "Thanks. See you tomorrow." Before hanging up.
"Dude! Were you just talking to Emily like that? Like Emily Calvin?!" Henry asked as soon as he dropped the call.
"Where are you going tomorrow?" Sky asked him, not giving him any chance to answer Henry’s question, not that he had any answer for him anyway.
"Racing." He said this casually as he opened his email to cross-check the details of the event that he had received the previous day.
"RACING?"
Sky, Noel, and Henry asked at the same time, making him stop what he was doing to look at all the surprised eyes staring at him.
"Wait, you were serious about it? You signed up for real?" Noel asked curiously.
"Signed up for what?" Sky looked lost. He looked between Chris and Noel until Chris answered, "Bike race. Tomorrow."
There was a sudden silence before Sky’s voice came out in disbelief. "Wait... what?"
"For real? You can compete?" Henry asked with interest.
Once again, Chris had no chance to respond because Sky interrupted again, and this time his voice was louder and harsher. "ARE YOU KIDDING ME?" He yelled out, almost startling Chris, who had not expected that reaction.
"You actually signed up for it? Why am I just learning about this? And how could you use such a lot of money to sign up for something so dangerous? Doesn’t that cost like the total of your monthly stipend for two months?" Sky scolded. He looked very dissatisfied. And so did Chris.
"I was supposed to get permission from you before I did my own thing?" Chris asked. He felt he was not getting something here because it didn’t make any sense that Sky was actually mad at him for doing his own thing!
"NO! But I am your roommate!" Sky snapped, standing up.
"Your senior! And I have been here even before you were born, I believe. So you should have asked me!"
"Hold it, asshole!" Chris said in annoyance, also standing up.
"Okay. This is getting intense." Noel said as he stood up, and Henry did the same, both trying to pacify the situation. An evening that had started so peacefully had suddenly turned into something else.
With four guys standing now and the heavy atmosphere in the room, the room felt even smaller right now.
Chris was trying so hard to control his temper. He was his senior? He had been living here even before Chris was born? Shit! He was indeed an asshole.
"I do not owe you any explanation for shit. I don’t get why you’re so worked up—"
"It is a dangerous sport. People get hurt." Collins, who had been quiet the entire time, chipped in quietly while surprisingly maintaining eye contact with Chris even after he stood up.
"We are just worried about you, Chris. You just resumed, and you’re here on a scholarship. If you hurt yourself, the school may not take it likely with you." Henry added quietly.
Chris’s gaze moved from Collins to Henry as he let their words sink in.
So Sky’s reaction was because he was worried? But even if he was, this was the worst way to go about it.
One thing Chris hated was being controlled. He had hated it when his parents did it too sometimes, and he wasn’t going to let this crazy control freak try to ruin his mood and life here.
Speaking of the crazy guy, when Chris glared at him, the frown that Sky already had on his face deepened, and he said, "I am not going to let you hurt yourself just because you are stubborn, Chris!" He then added in a serious tone. "I also promised your mother that you were in safe hands, and I am not—"
"So now you want to act like you’re a perfect roommate?" Chris asked in disbelief, snorting.
"Okay! This is escalating... Can you both please stop?" Noel asked in a serious tone as he got in between them.
"You don’t even stay here. You’re barely seen in the dorm, but I’m in safe hands? I do not want you fucking concerned about me. I am not a child!" Chris snapped at him. This time, he was very serious. That was the last straw that broke the camel’s back.
"Can you please tell this idiot why I am so fucking pissed?!" Sky said to Noel angrily.
Idiot? IDIOT?
Chris couldn’t believe it. This guy was beginning to take this too far.
"Honestly, I have been interested in joining, but it’s kinda dangerous. You should understand why Sato is pissed. He doesn’t do really well when he is nervous. Or when his friends are hurt." It was Henry who explained calmly.
"I wouldn’t sign up if I didn’t think I could do it. And I get that you are protective of your friends, but I do not like it. You are giving me a control-freak vibe. It’s creepy as fuck!"
Sky ran his hands through his hair and looked at Chris with sad eyes as he said, "I really really want to hate you right now." His voice was laced with frustration. He eyed him before he went to pick up his backpack, and he also wore his shoes. Seeing that he was preparing to leave, his friends began to scamper around to get their things.
"I really hope you know what you’re doing, Chris. If you dare get yourself hurt, I am so going to fucking control your entire life until you are out of this school, I promise you." Sky warned, leaving Chris staring at him in disbelief before he left the room, and Noel quickly followed.
Chris could hear Sky’s voice as he spoke to Noel, asking, "How did he find out about it?"
"It was Rain."
"Call her!"
Those were the last words he heard from Sky.
"Forgive him. He can be overbearing at times." Henry said when he got to the door with Collins.
Hell yeah!
Sky was scarily overbearing. He didn’t understand how his friends could put up with him. That attitude was a big turnoff for him.
"He may always act tough, but he gets scared easily. He is like that because he cares for you. He doesn’t even go to that event after what happened the last time he did. So, do not be mad, okay?" Henry spoke to him softly.
Chris was too mad to not be mad. He was burning with anger at this point.
"We’ll be at the pub. You can come if you want." He added before he calmly left the room with Collins, who just spared him a glance and disappeared.
There was no way he wanted to see Sky again. He’d rather stay here and go to bed.
