Chapter 47: The August Visitors (2)

"He must have been embarrassed, wasn’t he?" Mrs. Owen asked Rachel.

Rachel smiled timidly and shook her head. "He... is trying to live as low-key as possible. But he really misses you two."

"He is an Owen. He’ll soon realize that he cannot hide it for a long time." His father said.

"How is he coping? Is he fine? Does he look healthy? Is he feeding well?" The woman asked, looking concerned.

Rachel nodded. "He likes this place. And the food here is really nice. You do not have to worry so much about him. He handles everything just fine." She assured them.

"I doubt that. I’m not sure why he chose this place, but whenever he feels like leaving, remind him that he can talk to us any time, okay?"

The ’rich people’ vibe was slowly beginning to sip out, making Rachel a bit uncomfortable, but she managed a smile with a promise to do just that.

"Here, I brought him his favourite meal and a few other items." Mrs. Owen handed Rachel the handle of a luggage box and a medium-sized nylon bag.

None of them seemed like ’a few items’ to her.

"Let him know he has an unlimited coupon for whatever he needs in our hotel here. He can always go there whenever school feels too hectic."

As she spoke, her husband handed her an envelope, which she passed to Rachel.

"Here is some cash—"

"You... don’t have to," Rachel said it timidly, already flustered by everything.

"Oh dear, I have to. Chris won’t agree to this, but I’ll have to trust you to help him get whatever would help him live smoothly here. If he asked you to meet us instead of him, I can only assume he trusts you."

Rachel left the handle of the luggage box, hesitantly received the money, and put it inside her backpack.

"Give me your phone." Mrs. Owen demanded.

Rachel handed it over to her, and the woman saved her number in it before dialling her phone, and when it rang, she ended the call.

"Save my number. In case anything happens, do not hesitate to let me know."

Rachel was still in disbelief at the fact that she had Mrs. Owen’s contact information when Mr. Owen suddenly asked, "Are you his girlfriend?"

Rachel shook her head immediately, saying, "No, Sir. I am not. We are just friends."

"Just friends? Yet he asked you to come here instead of him? How long has he known you that he trusts you?"

From his tone, it seemed like Mr. Owen had some reservations about her, so she decided to be honest even though she most likely knew what would come next.

"We were classmates at Northend Academy. Middle School."

"Oh! You went to Northend!" Mrs. Owen’s eyes lit up. "That is so lovely to know. Who are your parents?"

That was it. The part she wasn’t looking forward to.

Thankfully, she didn’t get to answer before Mr. Owen told his wife that it was time for them to leave after checking his wristwatch. She looked at her wristwatch also and was suddenly filled with a tone of urgency as she said, "It was lovely to meet you, Rachel. Please take care of Chris. No matter what he does, just forgive him and help me out, okay?"

Rachel nodded and forced out a smile as she promised, "I will try my best."

"Do not ’try’. Do your best." The older woman said with a smile before she stepped closer to Rachel and said, "It doesn’t take long before your four years here are over and you’ll need to move on to the next phase." She gently brushed Rachel’s hair away from her face and, with a loving smile, said, "I’ll owe you."

With that, she said goodbye, and under the watchful eyes of almost half the entire school, they travelled back.

Meanwhile, Chris had been watching the exchange from a window with a group of other students who could not make it outside. He didn’t need anyone to tell him his mother was creating some kind of deal with Rachel in exchange for her to practically monitor him here and report back to her. It was the only thing about them that made him exhausted most of the time. It made him cringe, suddenly remembering how he had been grounded once in high school and had someone following him everywhere. He was glad he had gotten further away from them. But then again, he couldn’t trust his parents. He was still suspicious of the hotel he had seen the other day, and who knew if there was actually someone in this school whom his parents had secretly placed here to monitor him?

Around him, everyone was talking about Rachel, and he believed it was what anyone who saw the scene was talking about. His parents, especially his mother, had been so ’nice’ to Rachel that people had already concluded that she was their daughter, and they had come to the university to bring her items. At this point, her Princess facade would live on forever. Since people were already talking about how much they envied her.

He was glad that these people here didn’t care much about the business of their country; otherwise, they would have known those people were the famous Owen couple.

From now on, he was going to do a really good job making sure no one knew what his last name was unless he had to submit any official documents.

But it was probably already too late for that because the Dean called him in.

Of course, it would have been difficult for them not to find him.

He had their name in the school’s system, and today, the Owen couple had come for their ’child’ who was surprisingly at their university.

It seemed like his parents were bound to make things difficult for him.

So when he thought he was done with people fawning over him and treating him in a special way because of his family, he had to witness that sight in the Dean’s office.

Not again!
