Chapter 399: Chapter 398: A Phone Call

Yusuf Zuck’s first prey was a gazelle.

Yes, a gazelle, an animal that had become quite rare on the grasslands. He saw four, but only shot one. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to shoot them all, it was because, in his memory, gazelles were now extremely rare protected wildlife, which is why he only took one down.

Mainly, he wanted to taste what gazelle meat was like.

And since shooting that gazelle, his subsequent gains only increased.

He bagged thirteen rabbits and seven pheasants, along with a few large birds he couldn’t name that resembled eagles—taking down two of those as well. Then, there was the ’half-jin killer,’ a bird species with particularly delicious meat—he had eaten it before. The reason for its name was that after it was killed and gutted, it would still weigh half a jin.

After he used up the last of his thirty bullets, he discovered he had taken a total of thirty-one pieces of prey, mainly because he had shot down the two large birds with a single bullet.

When he ran out of bullets, roughly two hours had passed, so Yusuf Zuck gathered the scattered game together and called Nehemiah Blevins to pick him up.

"How many did you get? I’ll have you know, Miss Lara got nine," Nehemiah Blevins laughed over the phone.

"Just come and get me," Yusuf Zuck said with a laugh.

Soon enough, it took Nehemiah Blevins and Mia about twenty minutes to arrive by car. However, when they saw the pile of game at Yusuf Zuck’s feet from afar, they were momentarily dumbstruck.

Such a large pile. Yusuf Zuck had no car, no light, how could he have bagged so much by himself?

"Brother, I’m not bringing you here to play anymore. At this rate, you’ll exhaust all the resources of our great grassland!" Nehemiah Blevins laughed heartily and almost leaped out of the car to throw the game into the trunk.

Mia fell silent, puffing angrily at Yusuf Zuck. She thought that bagging nine pieces of game in two hours was an exceptional score, one that others might not achieve, but Yusuf Zuck was such a freak. Alone, with one gun, without a car or light, he had managed to secure thirty-one pieces of game.

"I’ll roast the gazelle for you when we get back," Yusuf Zuck offered with a smile.

"Hmph," Mia pretended to be angry and ignored him.

After Nehemiah Blevins loaded the game into the car, they quickly headed towards the temporary camp.

However, when they returned, they found not a single car near the two tents, as if no one else had come back, but the lights inside the tents were on, indicating the presence of illumination.

"Never mind them, let’s go in and warm up," Nehemiah Blevins said, ready to get out of the car.

"Wait, don’t get out," Yusuf Zuck suddenly pulled Nehemiah Blevins back and, raising his eyebrows, ordered, "Drive, speed up, go!"

"Go? Why?" Nehemiah Blevins and Mia were puzzled.

"Hurry up, make it quick," Yusuf Zuck urged. "Both tents are full of police."

"What?" Upon hearing Yusuf Zuck’s words, Nehemiah Blevins was doubtful. How could there be police here? And there were no police cars nearby.

Still, he listened to Yusuf Zuck, shifted into gear, and took off.

"Don’t run, or we’ll shoot!" As Nehemiah Blevins sped away, the policemen finally charged out of the tents, with one of them firing a pistol into the air.

Nehemiah Blevins broke out in a cold sweat but didn’t stop the car. Stopping and getting caught would have been a major problem, so he had no choice but to flee.

The SUV was fast, and so were the police. Their cars were parked just behind a small tuft of grass nearby, out of sight from the tents.

"Damn, how could there be police here, where is everyone else?" Nehemiah Blevins ranted as he raced on, soon losing sight of the police cars—they just couldn’t keep up with his professional off-road vehicle once he picked up speed.

At this point, Mia wasn’t concerned with why the police were there, but looked at Yusuf Zuck with astonishment. She was curious about how he knew there were police in the tents.

Soon the car reached the highway, and Yusuf Zuck jumped into the trunk and opened it, tossing all the game pieces out of the car.

They wouldn’t be eating gazelle today—something was off about the whole situation.

"Don’t go back to the villa," Yusuf Zuck instructed Nehemiah Blevins as they passed the villa’s crossroad.

"Are we good now? We don’t have any prey in the car, and my license plate is covered, so what are we afraid of? Just head back to the villa, take a shower, and hit the hay. If they come knocking, we just won’t admit anything," Nehemiah Blevins said, puzzled.

"We must’ve been sold out, so let’s not head back for now." At that moment, Yusuf Zuck let out a cold laugh. The police were lying in ambush, and nobody else had returned at the agreed time either. He couldn’t think of any other possibility than betrayal.

He just didn’t know if the target was him or Nehemiah Blevins!

"Impossible, those bosses are all decent people. We played together; how could they sell me out?" Nehemiah Blevins argued with disbelief.

"I feel like that guy with the surname Leonel is no good. What does he do?" Mia suddenly asked.

"Uh..." Hearing Mia’s comment, Nehemiah Blevins paused, then continued driving forward, deciding not to return to the villa. His face was also filled with anger.

Yusuf Zuck and Mia exchanged glances, seeing that Nehemiah Blevins must’ve thought of something.

"The guy’s name is Leonel Dyer. He’s from the capital, supposedly managing some gold transfer. He’s solved quite a few cases, taken down plenty of people. In the city, everyone’s afraid of him, and this guy has a problem..." Nehemiah Blevins growled to this point and glanced at Mia and Yusuf Zuck in the rearview mirror: "He has a thing for innocent women."

"No way?" Mia was shocked—she understood what that meant.

Yusuf Zuck also looked at Nehemiah Blevins in shock, saying with disbelief, "So he pulls the strings himself? Targets someone and then applies his methods? He just saw Mia just now and already got these crooked ideas in his head?"

"That ain’t shit." Nehemiah Blevins cursed, "He didn’t even spare a married woman selling vegetables in the market. An interest at dawn and before you know it, he’d taken her down. The man has no restraint—if he sets his sights on someone, he’ll do whatever it takes to spend a night with them."

"So if the incident today really was us being played, then it’s because of him. Just don’t know if that Tong Lao’Er had a hand in it," Nehemiah Blevins slammed the steering wheel and cursed, "If Tong Lao’Er was involved, I’ll wipe him out!"

Yusuf Zuck said calmly, "Find a place to stash the guns first. Later, we’ll go back to the villa. I need to meet with Boss Leonel as well." Yusuf Zuck was ready to strike; lately, he had been holding it in. After returning to the country, it felt like things hadn’t been going smoothly, and he kept encountering bad luck.

"Mr. Zuck, Ms. Mia, I’m sorry about this mess," Nehemiah Blevins said apologetically to Yusuf Zuck and Mia.

"It’s fine; it’s not your fault," Yusuf Zuck smiled and replied.

"Indeed, it’s not your fault, but this isn’t over," Mia fumed with anger. There were indeed all sorts of people in this world; could it be that Boss Leonel, after seeing her once, intended to harm her?

What the hell, falling into a den of bandits.

She angrily pulled out her phone and after searching for a while for a number, dialed another call.

Yusuf Zuck didn’t stop her, but he was curious about what madness she was up to.

It was past two in the morning, yet the call was picked up immediately: "Uncle Wang? This is Lara. Can I ask you for something? Do you have Uncle Yuwen’s number?"

"Yes, yes, I’ll have him call you right now," the voice on the other end of the phone said before promptly hanging up.

"Yuwen?" Upon hearing this name, Nehemiah Blevins driving the car was startled.

Yuwen is a compound surname, and in Inner Mongolia, there is a person who’s quite powerful with the same compound surname, Yuwen.

Within three minutes, the phone rang again. Mia answered, and laughter boomed from the other side.

"Mia, what are you doing calling me in the dead of night? Don’t tell me you’re on my turf?"

"I’m in Ulanqab, and I’ve been bullied... Someone is trying to harm me," Mia said somewhat pitifully.

"What?" Upon hearing Mia’s words, the voice on the phone suddenly erupted in a low roar.

"Where are you? Give me your location." The tone of Yuwen on the phone suddenly turned very sinister; Yusuf Zuck and Nehemiah Blevins could hear it quite clearly.
