Chapter 398: Chapter 397: Boss Sun Has Ideas
Although he had never fired a gun before, Yusuf Zuck believed he wouldn’t lose to Mia, let alone anyone else, because he had telekinesis. So even without a gun, he could still hunt more game.
Walking alone for about less than hundred meters, he saw a fox through his telekinesis.
Indeed, the prairies had seen an abundance of rabbits, wild chickens, and foxes in recent years, possibly due to an ecological imbalance. With fewer Prairie Wolves, the rabbit population had multiplied too quickly, leading to this imbalance. Without natural predators, foxes and rabbits could frolic freely on the prairies.
Foxes are very clever animals. Yusuf had heard the older generation talk about foxes having spiritual powers and had heard many stories about fox fairies and fox spirits.
He lived in Yang Valley County, and although he resided in the county town, in his childhood, he had heard the elders say that two white foxes once lived in the big pit of the first brick factory. Many people claimed to have seen an old man with a white beard accompanied by a child there at night.
These stories had circulated for many years, with numerous claims of sightings of the white-bearded old man and the child.
Later, the first brick factory was bought by a developer, and buildings were constructed on the site. Coincidentally, one of the buildings constructed directly above the big pit experienced strange occurrences constantly. Other than several people dying unexpectedly, there were reports of taps running red water, lights frequently short-circuiting, and accidents occurring throughout the building.
Eventually, the residents of that building gradually moved out, leaving only a few elderly folks and some tenants.
The stories carried an eerie truth, and even though Yusuf had never seen the white-bearded old man, the tales of the foxes attaining immortality had been passed down generation to generation and were still being told in his time.
Moreover, due to the older generation’s reverence for foxes, it was rare for people, including many hunters, to hunt foxes in the countryside. When encountering a fox, they would not shoot; instead, they would release them.
After some thought, Yusuf actually chose not to shoot. It wasn’t that he was afraid of fox spirits or ghosts; he believed that the world harbored many phenomena that science could not explain. To kill animals that had become sentient felt too cruel.
You could hunt wild chickens and rabbits without any hesitation because humans are included in their list of natural predators within the food chain. Humans can skin and butcher these animals, cooking them into delicious meals.
But what about foxes? Apart from their beautiful fur, fox meat tastes terrible.
Yusuf had a reverence for nature and the unknown, so he was unwilling to kill these sentient creatures just for the sake of numbers.
He changed his path, heading westward.
Meanwhile, as Yusuf and Mia competed in their hunting contest, in another direction, a man named Sun who had wanted to shake hands with Mia earlier, was smoking a cigar and making a phone call in his big jeep—he was calling Rylan Cortez.
"When I tell you to come, you come, get a move on," Sun commanded over the phone with an authoritative tone.
Before long, Rylan’s car arrived, and he climbed into the backseat.
"Boss, what’s the matter?" Rylan changed his address to ’Leader’ instead of ’Boss’.
Rylan Cortez was a businessman from Ulan Chabu, involved in real estate development, high-interest lending, running restaurants, and more, making him one of the multimillionaires of the city.
Nonetheless, he was exceedingly respectful in the presence of Mr. Sun.
"What’s the background of those two friends Nehemiah brought?" Mr. Sun asked with a chuckle.
"They’re probably from Xing’an Pharmaceutical Factory. I heard Nehemiah mention it once; this Boss Zhang was brought in as an investor by his cousin." Rylan and Nehemiah Blevins were buddies. Nehemiah worked with him, and together they raised money to develop real estate.
"Heh, that girl is pretty," Mr. Sun laughed, glancing at Rylan.
Rylan Cortez’s face showed difficulty upon hearing Mr. Sun’s words. He couldn’t mess with the people brought by Nehemiah Blevins. Moreover, he didn’t know the specific identity of the other party. What if they had powerful connections in the capital? Wouldn’t they be in trouble?
Mr. Sun was getting a bit too wild. In these past few years, he had come to see himself as the local Emperor in Ulanqab.
"If it’s too difficult, then forget it." Although he didn’t spell it out, his intention was clear—he was interested in the female companion with Mr. Zhang.
He didn’t mind if she was "second-hand goods," but even if she were, she was absolutely a national beauty—a far cry from the earthy, crude women he was used to.
"It’s not that, it’s just... I don’t even know her identity, and she’s from the capital, for all we know. She could be connected to some leader, and it wouldn’t end well," Rylan Cortez expressed his concern.
"Heh, comparing status with me?" Mr. Sun looked at Rylan Cortez with a scoff.
"Fine, I’ll do it!" As soon as he heard Mr. Sun’s words, Rylan Cortez decided on the spot. Mr. Sun had been sent down from the capital to spend his gold; his connections in the capital were rock solid.
It was rumored... rumored that by next April or May, Mr. Sun would be returning to the capital, and at the very least, he would be promoted two ranks.
Additionally, through his interactions with Mr. Sun over the past few years, Rylan Cortez had come to know that Mr. Sun’s clan in the capital was well-established and even seemed to have connections with a significant figure, who also shared the surname Sun.
So even if that Zhang had some backing, Mr. Sun was there to shoulder it.
"Rylan, you’ve performed well these past few years. When I return to the capital, you’ll come with me. I can still help you get a piece of land; you can then move on to bigger things. Don’t just squat on this vast prairie; the outside world is much more exciting," Mr. Sun patted Rylan Cortez on the shoulder.
"Now, with your word, leader, I’m ready to go through water and fire. Frowning would not be manly!" Rylan Cortez pledged, thumping his chest.
"Alright, go hunt some rabbits, haha." After receiving Rylan Cortez’s affirmative response, Mr. Sun laughed heartily. Rylan Cortez was someone who would do anything.
Over the past few years, Rylan Cortez had become closely associated with him, and the two of them had engaged in many unsavory activities.
Rylan Cortez got out of the car and returned to his own. However, he wasn’t in the mood to hunt rabbits anymore. Mr. Sun had his sights set on someone else’s woman, so it was his duty to help. And this was not the first or second time; Mr. Sun seemed to enjoy this pattern, specifically targeting pretty young wives of men or husbands.
He had helped several times before, including the wife of a civil servant and another who was the wife of a small merchant in the city. Both had ended up with Mr. Sun, and he had managed to settle all issues.
Mr. Sun himself wasn’t very high-ranking within the institutional hierarchy, not some city leader or the like, just a deputy head of a department, but his influence was immense in Ulanqab; there was nothing he couldn’t get done.
Everyone knew he hailed from that Four-Nine City, many high-ranking officials from the province had visited Ulanqab under the guise of inspection to curry favor with him and, after doing so, sought various targets in the capital.
Rylan Cortez knew that if he didn’t handle today’s matter, Mr. Sun would be displeased and a displeased Mr. Sun might just cause him to suffer.
Although it was an era of legal systems and advanced communications, figures like local Emperors still existed, and Mr. Sun was one of them.
Rylan Cortez made a phone call—it was the police.
