Chapter 322: Three-Day Deadline

Chapter 322: Chapter 322: Three-Day Deadline

Lucy Clayton was in a good mood today for two reasons: first, she had been transferred to a different hospital, and second, her condition had stabilized. Her eyes and legs didn’t ache as much anymore. After drinking a glass of milk and eating an egg in the morning, she even specifically called her three children and three kept women to the hospital.

She was that kind of domineering man, the type whose lovers, when gathered together, didn’t dare say a word out of line, but instead had to appear very harmonious.

It was during this moment of familial bliss with her three girlfriends and children that Yusuf Zuck, accompanied by Fleur Carson, pushed open the door of the hospital room and entered.

Upon seeing Yusuf Zuck, Lucy Clayton was startled. Why had this plague come again? Hadn’t she been told to get lost?

"All of you, go outside. Don’t shout in the hallway, okay? Daddy will show you a magic trick later." Clayton patted the heads of the three children before the three lovers took the kids out of the room.

They didn’t dare ask anything, only obeying Clayton’s orders.

"Mr. Zuck, what can I do for you?" Clayton knew Zuck wasn’t one to visit without good reason. If he came, he definitely had something on his mind. Clayton even felt that if Zuck wanted to kill someone, he probably wouldn’t care about the venue—he could just as well do it in a hospital.

Yusuf Zuck didn’t answer him; he just stared straight at him.

Clayton began to feel uneasy, confused.

After staring at him for over three minutes, with Clayton’s forehead already sweating, Yusuf Zuck finally said, "Did you have anything to do with what happened to Ember Vance?"

"Ember Vance? Officer Vance? What... happened to her?" Clayton asked, puzzled.

"She was shot and stabbed twice last night. That’s why I have to suspect it was your doing," Yusuf Zuck said, looking at him.

"It wasn’t me, I swear it had nothing to do with me! Look at me, can I still do such a thing? It’s really not me!" Clayton nearly jumped up, his face red and neck swelling. He truly hadn’t ordered anyone to go after Yusuf Zuck again, not to mention killing a police officer.

"I don’t care if it was you or not; I’m going to assume it was. I’m giving you three days. Three days from now, at this time, I’ll come back. You better have evidence that it wasn’t you, or else, I’ll throw you out of this building. I mean what I say!"

"Man, why are you targeting me like this?" Clayton pleaded, half laughing, half crying.

Yusuf Zuck didn’t respond, but turned and left.

"Don’t worry. I might be lacking in many things, but I can still find a few people in three days. This time, I’ll help you find your man. Then you’ll see what I can do. Same as before, think it over—working with you is what I want. I’ll be waiting here in three days!" Clayton was a tough cookie. He might not excel at other things, but he could still find people in Hong Kong.

The police might be unable to solve certain cases, but Lucy Clayton could—that was his skill.

As they say, every cat has its alley, and every dog has its day. Both the righteous and the wicked have their own ways, and Lucy Clayton had hers!

Yusuf Zuck did not linger. He left with Fleur Carson and also called Uriel Arellano to come and watch Lucy Clayton.

Uriel Arellano, as a former special forces soldier, was also skilled in surveillance. The reason Zuck had taken Fleur Carson away was that he sensed the danger was far from over; someone was still targeting him. He needed Fleur Carson to be more mobile, to covertly protect Miles O’Brien and Paisley Kirk.

And after Yusuf Zuck and Fleur Carson had left the hospital, Lucy Clayton began making phone calls.

"Otis Quinn, come over!"

"Eithan Quintana, come over."

"Mouse, come over."

"Big Bro, come over."

...

He called over a dozen people in one breath.

Otis Quinn was his enforcer, and Eithan Quintana was another one of his well-known hitters. Rat was a ruffian, and Parrot was a drifter from the capital, a jobless vagrant type. However, he was well-informed about both big and small matters, and some people specifically loved to dig into affairs.

And if he wanted to find the person who had harmed Ember Vance within three days, he had to rely on these ruffians and drifters.

In less than an hour, the hospital ward had gathered fifteen or sixteen people, some dressed in suits, others playing with prayer beads in traditional attire, and there were even some wearing military coats and fur hats—every person was involved in a different line of work.

However, upon seeing Lucy Clayton, they all bowed and scraped.

Although Lucy Clayton was not a real dragon head or a big shot in the capital in the true sense, he was after all a big brother figure—wealthy, ruthless, and well-connected. So these people were all exceedingly respectful to him.

"I’ve called everyone here to dig up some information," said Lucy Clayton, who had lost an eye and had become a cyclops, seemingly even more terrifying than before.

"Go ahead," everyone nodded and said.

"I heard that the female warden on Garden Road was taken out last night. Has there been any news on who did it? Parrot, do you have any specific information? I’m telling you, this matter concerns my life, so I won’t beat around the bush. Just tell me what you know, and the old rules apply—verified information will be rewarded, but don’t trick me."

"Brother Dao, I also heard about the female warden’s incident just before I came. It has just come out, so there’s no specific information yet. I’ll go and dig around," Parrot said with a grin.

"What about the others?" Lucy Clayton looked at the rest and asked.

The others shook their heads.

"Alright, I’ll give you three days to investigate who took out the female warden. If you find out in three days, I’ll reward each of you thirty thousand. If it doesn’t get figured out, I will be dead, and before I die, you all know what the consequences will be!"

"You all roll with me, so you know my temper—I won’t mince words. Get to work. In three days’ time, or rather, before midnight on the third day, bring me accurate information."

"And just a reminder, look into who the female warden has offended since taking office—it’s a vendetta. Now I have debt collectors coming after me, so I’m out of options!"

"Brother Dao, rest assured, we will do our utmost. We’ll get it done within three days," they assured.

Indeed, these people all rolled with him, and even if they hadn’t, they still worked on his turf—like the two thieves among them who led people in theft around his area. This made them people under his protection, and thereby his people.

Lucy Clayton had a large turf, with a mixed bag of all sorts under his command.

The dozen or so people left in a hurry. Before leaving, they also talked to each other, and some had already started making phone calls and rallying others. They had their own people below them, so in a chain reaction, batch by batch, half the capital would be set in motion.

Lucy Clayton was the big brother, Otis Quinn and others were a corner of the capital, and below their corner, there were also people.

Yusuf Zuck returned to the Concord Hospital, staying with Ember Vance in the ward and calling out to her with his consciousness at intervals.

Ruth Wilcox called to inquire and simultaneously comforted him not to rush anything and to remain calm, advising him to take care of his health.

She was also a smart woman, not asking Yusuf Zuck whether the patient he was visiting was male or female, nor who it was, because asking too much could just add to the worries.

At noon, Alvin Petty from Hong Kong called, asking Yusuf Zuck to come to Hong Kong to discuss the specifics of the New Century equity. He didn’t mention how much money, merely asking Yusuf Zuck to come for a talk.

Yusuf Zuck politely declined over the phone, suggesting that Alvin Petty handle it on his behalf or look for Marlon Shepherd. He said that financial matters could be discussed with Marlon Shepherd, and that he himself was tied up and couldn’t come over.

Alvin Petty, detecting the low tone in Yusuf Zuck’s voice, knew that something must have happened. However, he didn’t pry over the phone and just mentioned that discussing the matter with Marlon Shepherd would do.

Night fell, and at nine o’clock in the evening, David Hart was picked up by Faye Webb and Jerome Hart and brought to Concord, entering the ward.
