Chapter 193: Chapter 193: An Unexpected Meeting in a Foreign Land
On the night of November 15th, in Vancouver, Canada, at the Fairmont Hotel.
At that moment, Yusuf Zuck was standing in a suite cussing his mother because Fleur Carson had really screwed him over by arranging for him to stay here and then vanishing without a trace, not even answering her phone, while Yusuf hadn’t even had his dinner yet.
By nine o’clock in the evening, with no sign of Fleur returning and unable to make contact, Yusuf finally left the building. He had several thousand Canadian dollars on him, given to him by Fleur before she left.
As for where Fleur went and whom she was meeting, he had no idea.
The population of Vancouver was not large. This third-largest city in Canada did not seem too crowded, considering that Canada is the second-largest country in the world in terms of land area, yet has a relatively low population.
It was unlike back home, where a county could have a population of over a million, and a larger city could have several or tens of millions of residents.
In Vancouver, he heard, there were only about two million people.
Walking on the streets, Yusuf saw many faces of Chinese descent and understood that Canada was a country of immigrants, with many Chinese having settled there.
Because of the language barrier, even getting a meal was a problem for him.
After walking a city block without finding a Chinese restaurant, Yusuf couldn’t hold back any longer and stopped two ladies in front of a shopping mall, both of whom were Chinese women in their twenties.
"Hello, can you understand what I’m saying?" Yusuf asked in standard Mandarin.
"Sorry, ..." the two women began chattering away, first in English and then something that sounded a bit like Korean, leaving Yusuf completely dumbfounded. These two were not Chinese, but Korean!
"Fine, Joe Russo gamsahamnida!" Yusuf waved his hand and said goodbye.
The two young women seemed to understand that phrase, so they also said something gamsahamnida and waved at Yusuf!
"Kkekkekke—" Just then, Yusuf heard laughter, and the source was a young man and woman, both with Chinese-looking faces. The girl was covering her mouth and laughing!
"Hello, we are Chinese. Do you need help with anything?" The young man, dressed in a suit, came over with a smile and asked.
"Thank goodness, thank you," Yusuf quickly expressed his gratitude and excitedly said, "I’m looking for a place to eat, but I don’t speak the local language. The friend who brought me here went off to chase girls and ditched me!"
"Oh, you want to eat? We can take you there; we haven’t eaten yet either," said the woman as she approached.
"Great, let’s go together. We’re just here for a visit too. We’re all from the capital!" the young man said with a smile.
"What a coincidence, I’m also half from the capital. I’m living there now. Nice to meet you, I’m Yusuf Zuck." Yusuf immediately extended his hand. Meeting fellow countrymen in a foreign land was rare, and he was even more delighted that they were willing to help.
"Nice to meet you, I’m Marlon Shepherd, and this is my fiancée, Collins Brown," Marlon Shepherd shook Yusuf’s hand and introduced.
"You live in the capital? What do you do there?" Collins Brown asked curiously.
"I run an antique shop in the Ruiz Family area," Yusuf replied.
"Ah, you’re into collecting," Marlon and Collins realized.
"Let’s go, together," Marlon said with a smile, making a welcoming gesture, and then the three of them walked straight ahead.
"What about you, what do you do?" Yusuf asked as they walked.
"I’m a lawyer, and Collins works at a bank."
"A lawyer? So, if I wanted to hire a legal consultant, I would need to look for someone like you, right?" Yusuf’s mind started ticking.
"Exactly. Usually, many lawyers serve as legal consultants for businesses. Why, Mr. Zuck, are you also looking to hire a legal consultant?" Marlon asked with a smile.
"I’ve been thinking about it. We should definitely have a thorough discussion today!" Yusuf had long been looking for talent in finance or law, as his buddies were good for a fight but were the simple-minded, brawny types. So, when he truly expanded his business and became more powerful, he would need professionals like that to help him.
"You need a legal consultant even for selling antiques?" Collins Brown asked with a puzzled expression.
Yusuf Zuck replied with a smile, "You can’t sell antiques for a lifetime, right? What if one day I start a company? Then I’ll need a legal consultant, won’t I?"
"Here we are, it’s this French restaurant." As the three of them were talking, they arrived at a French restaurant; its sign was all in foreign letters, and Yusuf Zuck could not recognize a single word.
Marlon Shepherd and Leila Brown led him inside, and then Marlon started speaking French, and it was really fluent at that, leaving Yusuf Zuck completely baffled.
"You don’t speak English, you don’t speak French, so what are you doing in Canada?" While Marlon Shepherd was ordering, Leila Brown looked at Yusuf Zuck with a curious face, as if he were a lost child who had to look for Chinese people on the streets.
"I was supposed to make a detour to Las Vegas. My friend brought me here; he wanted to meet an old friend, so he forgot about me."
"To Las Vegas? For real?" Leila Brown and Marlon Shepherd looked at Yusuf Zuck with astonished faces.
"Why? Is Las Vegas also part of your itinerary?" Yusuf Zuck asked the two of them.
"Indeed, we’re leaving for Las Vegas the day after tomorrow. Collins’s cousin lives there," Marlon Shepherd replied.
"That’s such a coincidence. If my friend comes back the day after tomorrow, let’s go together," Yusuf Zuck also marveled at life’s coincidences.
"So what are you going to do in Las Vegas?" Leila Brown continued to inquire.
"My friend loves gambling. He insisted on taking me along to play a few hands. You know, gambling isn’t allowed in our country, so we decided to come out and have some fun, just for a few days and then we’ll head back!"
"Great, that’s great, we’re also planning to play a few hands when we get there; we can do it together!" Leila Brown clapped her hands in approval. When in Las Vegas, whether skilled at playing or not, one must participate—it’s all about taking part.
"All right, I’ll take you guys," Yusuf Zuck laughed. He was going there to win some money.
Before long, the dishes Marlon Shepherd ordered arrived—three portions of foie gras, three portions of cod, a bottle of red wine, and some sauces, all very authentic French cuisine.
Yusuf Zuck was really hungry, and he didn’t stand on ceremony. As soon as the food was served, he began to eat.
Of course, to avoid looking too bad, he didn’t gulp down his food. It didn’t bother him much, but since he had two new friends sitting next to him, he couldn’t just let himself lose face.
"By the way, Miss Brown, which bank do you work for? I need you to calculate some interest for me," Yusuf Zuck didn’t wait for Leila Brown to ask, taking the initiative to say, "If I deposited a hundred million yuan in your bank for a year, how much interest would I earn in a year?"
"Wow—Yusuf Zuck, you’re so rich?" Leila Brown and Marlon Shepherd exclaimed in unison.
"I’m just asking; could you calculate it for me?" Yusuf Zuck said with a smile.
"There’s no need to calculate. I work at China Bank. If you deposit a hundred million yuan for a year, the interest would be about four million yuan or more. Of course, if you chose a fixed deposit for more than three years, you would get even higher returns. However, Yusuf Zuck, if you’re considering making a deposit, you must come to me—we all have deposit targets to meet!"
"Only four million yuan for a year?" Yusuf Zuck shook his head. With a hundred million, doing business could earn you at least four million in a year, right? So depositing large amounts in the bank is still a loss!
"Hehe, Mr. Zuck could invest in stocks or funds," Marlon Shepherd suggested with a smile from the side.
"No, you have to put it in the bank. Yusuf Zuck, please don’t listen to him," Leila Brown immediately interrupted.
"Why not?" Yusuf Zuck asked Marlon Shepherd in surprise.
Leila Brown gave Marlon Shepherd a look, signaling him not to talk.
With a wry smile, Marlon Shepherd said, "I also serve as a legal consultant for a securities company. I handle financial court cases, so I also advise some friends on short-term investments. But it would be safer for Mr. Zuck to just save the money."
"Oh? Is that so?" Yusuf Zuck’s eyes suddenly lit up; he had been wanting to find a financial advisor recently. Not only was Marlon Shepherd a lawyer, but he also specialized in financial litigation and worked as an investment consultant on the side?
This Marlon Shepherd might be worth considering!
