Chapter 42: A Glimpse Into Rank 4
[Your Understanding Defies the Heavens. By manifesting your intent to walk, you have comprehended the Low-Innate Skill ’Embryonic Ultra Development’.]
’This makes Innate Skill twenty-three, I believe,’ Jin thought, already making use of the newest one to crawl out of his crib.
Getting used to his stubby limbs and small body, he walked around the room. After some time, he sneakily opened up the room’s door and made his way down a hallway.
It didn’t take very long for a particular area of the palace to come into view.
This area, the Royal Library, was guarded by numerous palace guards. There were far more stationed here than throughout the whole eastern side of the palace, which was where Jin stayed.
’I had to sneak past the maids stationed outside my door, as well as the dozen-guard team guarding the perimeter of my room, and now there’s this...’
With the Innate Skill Spiritual Sight, Jin could determine the approximate strength of anyone in close proximity. This skill, after being further comprehended and improved by him following his rank-up to Rank 2, now enabled him to gauge the strength of anyone at or below the peak of Rank 3.
The maids typically lingered around the early levels of Rank 1, while the majority of the palace guards were in the later and peak levels of Rank 1.
As for the security keeping watch outside the Royal Library...
’I count 17 Early Rank 2’s, 8 Mid Rank 2’s, 2 Late Rank 2’s, and... 1 Peak Rank 2.’
If this wasn’t enough to emphasize the importance of the Royal Library, then Jin didn’t know what would.
And for reference, even the King of the Kingdom, a known powerhouse, was only in the beginning stages of Rank 3. With this in mind, the Royal Library’s security seemed like overkill.
However, Jin knew better.
’This Royal Library contains more than just common scrolls and scriptures.’
There were secrets buried in the library, and he would dig them out himself.
"Hm?" The Peak Rank 2 guard sniffed the air, sensing something off. He couldn’t pinpoint what exactly, but something wasn’t right.
"What’s the matter, Captain Salar?" asked one of the Late Rank 2 guards.
"...Nothing," Captain Salar shook his head. "I’m probably just paranoid. For a second there, I actually believed that a small translucent shadow was standing right in front of me."
"A small shadow...?" The Late Rank 2 guard looked around with vigilance, but angled his head in confusion when he found no such shadow. There wasn’t even the slightest trace of human life in the vicinity.
"The long shifts must just be getting to you, Cap," said the Late Rank 2 guard, urging the others to nod while maintaining their positions.
"Maybe..." Captain Salar sighed, the heaviness in his head influencing his train of thought.
Meanwhile, behind the embellished door of the Royal Library, a small shadowy figure phased through the door itself. He did so with the use of a different Mid-Innate Skill called Permutation, which enabled him to walk through walls and the like. Even most magic-restricted materials weren’t completely able to stop him; they merely slowed him down a little, such as what was just shown when he got into the library.
’That Guard Captain has keen instincts. He nearly ascertained my existence,’ Jin thought. ’But seeing as how my multitude of invisibility skills are pretty limited right now with the absence of any real cultivation base, it makes sense that a Peak Rank 2 could partially sense me.’
Rank 1 Evolvers were superhumans.
Rank 2 Evolvers were known to be capable of sweeping through whole districts.
Someone at the peak of Rank 2, nearing the mythical Rank 3 city-destroyer rank, was not to be underestimated. To the current Jin, anybody at this level was a serious threat.
’But that’s only for now.’
Jin’s eyes shone as he observed the wide array of books lining several floors. The top floor was so high up that it was as if the whole library was a tower in and of itself. On that floor, a couple of objects instantly stood out to Jin, but he decided to save them for last.
’For now, it’s time to figure out what this world is all about.’
After some time...
’So that’s how it is.’
With a decoy version of himself staying behind in his room, and his real self in the Royal Library, Jin absorbed the knowledge contained in hundreds of books. Furthermore, he did so in less than three hours, practically flying through the pages.
To summarize what he read thus far, there were three generalized categories:
World History,
Geography,
and
Cultivation System.
For World History, the Spirit Continent’s furthest traceable moments dated back more than ten thousand years ago. During this primitive age for the world, ’Gods’ ascended from their mortal statuses. They shed their mortal coils and made their homes in the heavens.
’The so-called heaven is likely just the clouds above. But even still, these "Gods" must be rather powerful, at least Rank 4.’
To create a permanent abode in the stratosphere, you needed to begin undergoing something called |Deitification|, which was what came after the Intent Fusion focus of Rank 3. This was to say that the process of |Deitification| was closely related to the road to Rank 4, where powerhouses capable of single-handedly annihilating countries made their mark.
It was also during |Deitification| that most Evolvers learned how to fly, even acquiring a certain control over the elements of nature.
Creating a home in the clouds was not entirely out of the question. You just had to be a veteran Rank 4 Expert.
’From what is listed, there are 42 Gods protecting the 42 Kingdoms of the Spirit Continent. Of which, they include those like the Moon God, the Ocean God, and the Sun God.’
What one saw when they looked up and observed certain parts of the stratosphere was also caused by the Gods. For example, in the Moon God’s territory, a luminescent spherical phenomenon hung in the skies above all. This eventually made it the source of tons of Faith Energy, which looked to be the route that the ’Gods’ of this world took in their Rank 4 |Deitification| journey.
The Sun God, Dream God, and all the others also had massive looming phenomena representing their qualities. It’s just that they were located in the other kingdoms, not the Moon God Kingdom.
The Gods were not known to interfere or clash with each other.
Since their Ascension some thousand years ago, they simply secluded themselves in their sky-abodes—all while their faithful devotees did whatever they could to spread their religions.
