Chapter 916: Chapter 61: Defensive Tactics Part 3

Lu Fan wiped off her sweat and gazed at the roughly formed fort with a sigh of relief. In the clearing before her, there were three small bunkers, spaced thirty meters apart from one another in an equilateral triangle arrangement. Each bunker could house 15 survivors and a sufficient supply of ammunition. In the center of these bunkers was the Mother Fort, about two stories high. This was the command post where, aside from providing a temporary rest rotation for the soldiers, it could also offer quick reinforcements to the other bunkers through the interconnected trench system buried underground, facilitating both offensive and defensive support.

"It’s still not sturdy enough," said Lin Weiguo as he dragged his injured body over, rifle on his back. He placed his hand on the bunker, releasing his Ability, and the earthen structures immediately began to compress. The old soldier’s Ability was to use any material to form armor, which naturally included the ability to shape it.

"Hold on, I brought some cement, sprinkle it over, and then let Aunt Xin Lan water it." Lu Fan shook off her Alice apron, and a large amount of cement poured out. Seeing those luxury cars, she suddenly had a new idea, "Uncle Lin, how about changing these into metal sheets and add them on?"

"No need, I have steel." Lin Weiguo took out many steel plates; upon touching them, they melded into a liquid form and then coated the bunkers. In an instant, they were filled with the cold metallic essence.

"We need to do the same with the tunnel system, right? This is truly a massive project." Lu Fan glanced at her watch; less than three hours had passed, and there was still more to endure.

The fourth wave of attacks involved eight Teleportation Gates, from which mostly low-level bugs emerged. The situation was still manageable. Twenty minutes later, the Conquerors destroyed all the Teleportation Gates, ending the battle.

The night wind carried the foul stench of corpses. Those university students, still not accustomed to it, squatted to the side, vomiting. The two remaining German flight attendants felt an endless sense of alienation, as no one chatted with them or cared about their well-being.

"Group Leader, don’t abandon us, we can do a lot of things." As soon as the battle ended, the two flight attendants ran up to Tang Zheng, grabbing his hands in a plea for help.

"Help look after the wounded," Tang Zheng replied, then went in search of Dantai. But one of the blonde flight attendants was persistent and hugged him from behind.

"Please, don’t give up on us," the flight attendant wept, unable to maintain her composure in the face of death. The other one, who had not spoken a word, stared intently at the handgun at Tang Zheng’s waist. For fear of their rebellion, the flight attendants had been disarmed.

"I won’t give up on anyone, don’t overthink it. Go look after the wounded. If we wanted you dead, we would have acted already." Tang Zheng suppressed his anger, and even though the flight attendant’s ample breasts pressed against his back, he unceremoniously broke free from her grasp. He had no time to listen to newbies’ ramblings.

The two flight attendants looked forlorn, trembling like homeless quails. Eventually, they exchanged glances and headed toward a Hummer where a soldier with a broken leg lay.

"I hope they will keep their promise," the busty flight attendant sobbed, oblivious to her colleague’s abnormal behavior.

"I’ve noted the frequency of the bugs’ appearance. A wave is sure to come every thirty minutes, and it will surely be mixed with even more dangerous bugs. Just now, a triangular-headed bug emerged, moving quickly and able to spray acid." Observing these things was almost an instinct for Tang Zheng, but it was also incredibly draining. He really wanted to get some sleep.

"I bet we’ll see some Insect-Humans as well, but for the next wave, we’ll have shelters to hide in," said Dantai, satisfied with the progress of the construction but concerned that both the Little Lolita and the old soldier had expended too much Life Energy, which could be detrimental to future battles.

"We can’t worry about that now, let everyone drink Sweet Spring Potions to hold out," Tang Zheng said. Medics and supplies were always a weak point for the Central State Warhammer team, and had they not captured a good supply of Sweet Spring, the Conquerors would have been worn down as well.

"I hate these no-tech swarm attacks. If they also shouted a few slogans, they’d be even more brutal than Soviet soldiers’ human waves," Dantai scoffed.

"Just give them a few political commissars to supervise, and I guarantee their morale will hit MAX!" Pang Meiqin joked, hoping to lighten the mood. Unfortunately, with many soldiers present, they did not take the jest well, as they disliked such humor.

"Tsk, hoorah!" Pang Meiqin got carried away, raising her rifle and shouting aloud.

"Well, I prefer no-tech to tech tactics. I do not wish to see bugs coordinating tactics and land assaults; that would be a nightmare." Tang Zheng cut off further discussion and got straight to the point, "Have the teams been divided?"

The survivors paled at the thought of Tang Zheng’s scenario, knowing that they could never withstand that.

"Qin Yan, Xin Lan, Yu Manli, come over," Dantai coughed, holding a water-based pen to write, "Eleven people per team, here’s the list."

The three captains began to call roll to familiarize themselves with their respective soldiers.

Before the next wave of the punishing force arrived, everyone entered the Mother Fort, familiarizing themselves with their combat positions and continuing to reinforce the defenses. The Little Lolita was exhausted, sitting on the ground, panting heavily. The old soldier had exhausted the little strength he had just accumulated. Ai Yixin and Sha Ou were doing slightly better—at least they could lie in the bunkers and fire without issue.

The Blue Trojan was definitely out to kill everyone. This wave opened ten Teleportation Gates, and among them appeared new varieties of bugs, including those assault Beetles with triangular heads, incredibly fast, on par with a Hummer. Their heads were very hard, with bullets ricocheting off upon impact; targets had to be their limbs.

This fearsome charge frightened all the newbies. Had it not been for the fortified bunkers, these creatures would have definitely flipped and punctured the Hummer, and an out-of-service Hummer would inevitably be surrounded and torn apart by the bugs.

"Good thing we made it in time," the high-ranking Platoon Leader wiped the sweat from his brow and commenced battle.

"I wonder how Huangfu Xiong and Xu Changtai are doing? They must be running ragged!" In adversity, one always needs to find some amusement, so Dantai rarely joked around, but unfortunately, others had already taken their positions in the Child Bunkers, with only the seriously wounded nearby.

"Of course, our numerical advantage is finally making a difference," Ai Yixin said with satisfaction.

Xu Changtai and Huangfu Xiong also finally understood what it felt like to be alone against a swarm of bugs. Facing such attacks, their consumption was vast. (To be continued.
