Chapter 1211: Chapter 82: Combat and the Yellow Sparrow
Liu Guohao and his two comrades ran up to the stairwell entrance and saw an American soldier who had been turned into a mass of mutilated flesh. His legs, smeared with visceral matter, were twisted irregularly, and they nearly vomited at the sight. These weren’t zombies, but a living, breathing person, which made it even harder to accept.
Tang Zheng swung his left fist silently, gesturing for silence, and quickly peeked into the corridor. Across the stairwell, a soldier was firing, blocking the escape route of Dong Zixuan’s group. It seemed there were also soldiers guarding the room across from Room 907, occasionally lobbing hand grenades and suppressing with a general-purpose machine gun, showing off formidable firepower.
The American soldiers were highly skilled. Ten seconds after Tang Zheng’s group opened fire, inquiries came from the blood-stained walkie-talkie on the ground.
The soldier on the ground was dead for sure, not uttering a word. Even if Tang Zheng had the ability to mimic like a parrot, he couldn’t bluff his way through. There was no choice but to fight it out tough.
Before the enemy could react, Tang Zheng dashed into the passage with his gun, unleashing a hail of gunfire at the opposite side,
The soldiers in the corridor were incredibly quick to react, taking cover behind the wall. Unfortunately, the power of the Level A firearms was so strong that the large-caliber bullets could easily penetrate the walls, leaving behind large crater-like holes.
The bulletproof vest stuffed with ceramic plates was useless against such gunfire, more fragile than paper, and the soldier was killed instantly without even a chance to issue a warning. However, the two soldiers across the door weren’t foolish; seeing bullets of different calibers shooting through the corridor, they immediately realized they were under attack and began shouting into the walkie-talkies.
There was no need to guess that the soldiers’ attack was going to intensify.
"Tang Zheng, have you guys arrived?" Zhou Meng didn’t want to play the hero, nor did he have Dong Zixuan’s reluctance to ask the group leader for help. For him, survival was what mattered most.
"Are you guys stupid? If they’re blocking the door, can’t you use hand grenades to blast through the wall from next door? It’s not like anyone’s going to charge you for repairs," Tang Zheng was so irritated by their lack of adaptability that he felt like hitting someone.
"Move out." A blush spread across Dong Zixuan’s face from the scolding, but she knew Tang Zheng was right and immediately ran to the wall.
"One grenade won’t be enough; we need to make it a cluster hand grenade." As soon as Kong Licheng spoke, a massive explosion rocked the area, blasting a large hole in the right side of the wall. Debris flew everywhere, striking Ding Jian and Nie Jianhua on the back of their heads, splattering blood across their faces, and the shock wave knocked the rest to the ground. But this saved their lives because, immediately after, bullets screamed through the hole like a tide, sweeping through the entire room.
"Save me!" Nie Jianhua clutched his head, wriggling like a maggot towards the back of the sofa, while Ding Jian, though more enduring, struggled to find cover.
Zhao Dongtao and Tong Dahong reacted slightly better, rolling on the ground and dodging to the sides of the large hole, which were blind spots from the gunfire.
"Scatter to the sides." Kong Licheng immediately gave up on blowing up the wall; staying alive was more important. Dong Zixuan also bent down; bullets whizzed by overhead, and the peril of possible death at any moment soaked their backs with cold sweat.
"Throw hand grenades, block the gaps!" Tang Zheng roared into the walkie-talkie. His words barely ended when a thunderous explosion could be heard, clearly not the work of Dong Zixuan’s side, suggesting the enemy might be employing the same tactics. He also realized why only a few soldiers were defending—they must have all gone to flank and attack aggressively.
Zhao Dongtao and Tong Dahong reacted swiftly, pulling out hand grenades, yanking the safety pins, and hurling them into the gap in the wall. Explosions sounded continuously.
"Be careful with the other wall," Tang Zheng didn’t rush forward rashly but warned them again. If they got caught in a pincer attack from both sides, they would all be done for.
Sure enough, the enemy moved faster than he expected. The sound of explosions came again, followed by Nie Jianhua’s piteous screams begging for his parents. Just these few cries severely affected morale; if Tang Zheng had been there, he would have slapped his teeth out.
"What do we do? We are trapped?" Kong Licheng had just shouted when Tong Dahong also cried out, "I’ve been shot."
"Dong Zixuan, use your ability, let the magma blaze a path out." Tang Zheng didn’t blame the policewoman; anyone who suddenly gained power and found themselves in a deadly crisis would panic and lose composure.
The policewoman slapped her forehead in regret. She was no longer an ordinary person. The next moment, the floor and walls cracked and bulged into small mounds, turned red, melted, and heat began to churn. Some furniture caught fire, and then, like a tsunami, magma surged into the neighboring room.
The floor collapsed by half, reducing the space where Dong Zixuan’s group could take cover, but it made them much safer. The soldiers’ onslaught was halted, and continuous screams could be heard.
Under Dong Zixuan’s control, the neighboring room turned into a furnace under volcanic heat, unbearably hot and melting everything in sight. The soldiers naturally got burned as well.
Tang Zheng rolled out into the hallway, setting up the Howling Reaper. As two soldiers ran out in a frenzy, they were immediately struck head-on.
Bullets tore their bodies apart, blood splattered everywhere.
Tang Zheng didn’t wait for them all to come out before finishing them off—that would be too dangerous. It was better to block them back and let Dong Zixuan use her power to bombard them.
The policewoman’s magma was viciously rampant. While the new recruits were reassured, a radius of thirty meters suddenly plunged into pitch darkness, where not even the orange-red glow of the scorching magma could penetrate the dark veil. To Tang Zheng, it appeared as a black sphere rising abruptly, enveloping a section of the corridor and rooms. When the darkness lifted, the potency of the flowing magma on the ground had significantly diminished, almost vanishing.
