Chapter 1161: Chapter 40 Escape from Death

The Tyrant forced the iron gate open and appeared in the lobby. Raising its head to the sky, it let out a bellow so loud that the reverberation nearly burst the eardrums of the survivors.

This thing was an abandoned biochemical monster, imprisoned in a cultivation tank all along. To create more trouble for the enemy, the anti-government forces let it loose.

A single Tyrant could overrun a fully armed squad with its firepower. Standing over three meters tall, its gray-white skin was peeling off, revealing robust muscles, resembling a steel tower. It could withstand a tank, and on its right hand, each finger had evolved into a claw, the tips sharper than military knives, leaving deep indentations when dragged across metal walls.

The massive heart was exposed on its surface, surrounded by thick interwoven arteries, through which one could see the blood rushing, providing enormous power.

"Don’t panic, combat formation, cover and withdraw in succession," the Group Leader roared, commanding his subordinates, his MG42 spraying bullets wildly, ceaselessly targeting the Tyrant’s heart to blast it to death.

A swath of ammo clips was ejected, clattering to the ground and making a cacophony.

These were newbies, none dared to confront the Tyrant directly. The Group Leader’s command was almost ignored as they all made desperate attempts to flee, trying to get as far away from the Tyrant as possible.

The military man caught by the Tyrant smashed against the wall, shattering all his bones, his skin split open, and he was drenched in blood. He was then swung around as a human flesh wolf-tooth club.

A brunette woman running slightly slower was hit in the back and fell to the ground. Before she could get up, she heard the thud, thud of massive footsteps behind her and was soon engulfed by the huge shadow cast by the Tyrant’s body.

"No, please help!" Seeing the Tyrant’s giant foot coming down, the woman was scared out of her mind. She managed to crawl a bit, dodging with her upper body, but her legs were crushed, along with the corpse of the military man, into minced meat.

The Tyrant, expressionless, bent down and casually seized the woman’s head, hurling it at a short-haired man.

The man dodged, and the woman’s torso slammed into the ground, rolling away and trailing a long streak of blood.

"Die!" The short-haired man fired a hand grenade, aiming for the Tyrant’s heart.

The Tyrant swung its arm fiercely, colliding with the grenade, blasting it midair, and then burst through the gun smoke to chase them. Its height and long legs gave it sprinting speeds comparable to a sports car.

Humans were utterly powerless before the Tyrant, incapable of mounting effective resistance, like an insect shaking a tree—utterly futile.

"Run." Watching as two more unfortunate souls were massacred, Tang Zheng decisively retreated, dashing towards the nearest passage on the right side of the lobby.

The way they had come was not an option—the dining area still held a large group of zombies that might have breached and followed into the corridor. And the path previously taken by the group was also unsafe, who knew if there was a second Tyrant.

"While there are still many of us, run! Stick to the walls!" Tang Zheng pressed his body against the wall as much as possible, staying on the outer edge of the crowd to reduce the chance of the Tyrant spotting him. He noticed that anyone who caught the Tyrant’s attention didn’t escape; all were killed.

Neither Steven nor his two companions had any heroic delusions, sticking closely to Tang Zheng.

Seeing the situation was irretrievable, the fierce German Group Leader abandoned those who wouldn’t listen and followed Tang Zheng. Some panicked fools ran into the way Tang Zheng had come. The Group Leader didn’t remind them—had that route been safe, why would those four have chosen another?

The UK Group Leader had the same thought and, together with the other leaders, posed a strong force. Despite the danger, there might be a slim chance of survival against the Tyrant.

Some savvy newbies also followed suit, and others wanted to stick with the majority; unfortunately, they were cut off by the Tyrant and couldn’t unify.

The Tyrant of this generation had very low IQ, only the instinct to kill. Seeing the crowd on Tang Zheng’s side was larger, it gave chase, nearly driving the two foreign Group Leaders to their wits’ end.

"These two teams must have formed an alliance." Tang Zheng, leading the way, hadn’t run a hundred meters before spotting several zombies. Seizing the chance, he slowed down, not wanting to lead the charge. He figured the German Group Leader would charge forward to break through quickly. All he had to do was stay in the front half of the group. Besides, appearing weak could lower the others’ guard against him.

"Zombies!" Susan and Laurie followed close behind Tang Zheng, shouting loudly.

"Move aside!" The German Group Leader rushed past them, his MG42 firing and turning several zombies into sieves.

"A bunch of wastes." The UK Group Leader cursed and pushed past the newbies in the way, racing ahead.

The Tyrant sprinted hard, its heavy punch landing on a newbie’s body, then carrying him to crash into the wall.

Splat, the newbie was squashed flat, his blood and flesh remains painting a gruesome mural on the wall.

With every passing second, a newbie perished, turning this into a passage of death akin to hell, everywhere was blood and broken flesh.

"This won’t do, we’ll be driven into a dead end." The UK Group Leader overtook Tang Zheng, yelling at the German Group Leader at the front, "We must organize a counterattack."

"It’s too narrow here!" Kohler was also anxious. Regular bullets were too weak, unable to harm the Tyrant, and the sight of more zombies appeared ahead, sweats of panic breaking out on his forehead.

"I can’t keep running around with these guys," Tang Zheng realized that if their tactics were wrong, even if they used up all their ammunition, they wouldn’t be able to kill the Tyrant. Looking at the door at the end of the corridor to the left, he suddenly started to sprint. After the two group leaders turned into another passage, he immediately raised his gun and blasted at the electronic lock, destroying it and hiding inside the room.

Laurie looked on in astonishment, not understanding Tang Zheng’s actions. She thought staying behind would definitely result in being cornered by the Tyrant. Steven, however, reacted quickly. Continuing to run would eventually lead to being blocked by zombies, so he immediately turned around. Just as he was about to enter the room, a foot kicked out, hitting him right in the abdomen.

Steven crashed into the opposite wall, wracked with intense pain, feeling as if his intestines were about to tie themselves in knots.

"Have you gone mad?" Steven cursed angrily. Looking up, he saw Tang Zheng’s gun muzzle aimed at him. In desperation, he yelled, "Don’t!"

Bang, Tang Zheng shot and broke Steven’s right leg. Since they had turned against each other, he wouldn’t leave any survivors to avoid being targeted later. Besides, by injuring him, Steven would move slower, possibly leading the Tyrant away.

"What are you doing?" Susan originally intended to enter the room, but seeing Tang Zheng suddenly lash out, she froze in place.

The Tyrant had already pursued to within forty meters. The newbies were shouting and screaming. They saw Tang Zheng’s violent actions but didn’t intervene because they weren’t on the same team. In fact, they were hoping that Steven would draw the firepower.

"What are you dazed for? Do you want to die?" Tang Zheng grabbed Susan’s wrist and pulled her into the room, then closed the iron gate behind them.

This was a laboratory. Tang Zheng glanced around quickly and spotted the ventilation duct. He ran over and used his shotgun to blast it open.

"Come here, crawl in," Tang Zheng ordered as he grabbed Susan’s waist and hoisted her up.

Susan was touched to death, never expecting that Tang Zheng would think of her first in such a situation.

"Hurry up," Tang Zheng said as he tugged at Susan’s buttocks, not in the mood to enjoy the sensation. Seeing that her head had already crawled in, he let go and dashed toward the central sterile laboratory room.

Through the glass in the door, he saw six people had run past. That meant there were still seven left behind.

"Based on the situation just now, the Tyrant should chase after the group with more people. I hope I’m not wrong," Tang Zheng thought. Without praying for divine blessing, he put on his sunglasses and took out a flash grenade. If the newbies and Steven failed to lead the Tyrant away and it broke into the room, the first thing it would see was Susan not yet in the duct. While it killed her, Tang Zheng could seize the chance to escape.

Even in hiding, Tang Zheng thought of a backup plan. Luckily, Steven, seeing the Tyrant, struggled to climb and cried out loudly for help. Together with the other newbies, they completely attracted the Tyrant’s attention.

Seeing the shadow of the Tyrant dash past the window, Tang Zheng breathed a sigh of relief. He ignored the woman still desperately crawling into the ventilation duct and began searching the laboratory for anything usable.

"It looks like the only option when encountering the Tyrant is to escape," thought Tang Zheng after searching around and finding nothing. The three computers on the office desk were still operating normally, as they weren’t networked, but they contained nothing but useless data.

Tang Zheng turned on the communicator, wanting to hear about the other recovery teams’ situations, only to catch a burst of desperate shouts for support.

"We’ve encountered the Tyrant. Requesting backup."

"Use number three hand grenades and biochemical bullets to intercept it, quickly!" barked a captain loudly, commands coming through the disordered background filled with shouting.

"Hmm?" Tang Zheng set down his backpack, opened it, and checked the captured hand grenades. Indeed, on three of them, he found the mark of a number three. As for the biochemical bullets, they were easy to find, ten ammo clips were filled with bullets marked with a spot of green paint. He separated these and packed them away.

"Tang, are you still there?" Susan’s trembling voice came down. She was scared of being abandoned.

"I’m here, come down. It’s safe." Tang Zheng walked over to the ventilation opening. Su Han couldn’t wait to back out and, losing her grip, fell onto him.

After running for so long and carrying the backpack, Tang Zheng was exhausted. Being hit by Susan, he felt his buttocks land on something solid.

"Tang, thank you." Susan, with tears streaming down her face, crawled onto Tang Zheng, kissing his lips. If it wasn’t for this man, she would have surely died.

"Alright, time to leave," Tang Zheng said, patting Susan’s head and getting up.

Susan obediently followed, completely unaware that Tang Zheng had saved her only because he needed a cannon fodder bait. After what had just transpired, she believed he was a good person worth following.

"About Steven, I’m sorry," Tang Zheng felt he needed to mitigate the consequences of injuring a white man, but Susan voluntarily provided an explanation.

"I understand, he wasn’t a good person, kept stealing glances at my chest multiple times," Susan stated, deliberately thrusting out her chest wherein the suspender shirt, the outlines of two points were clearly visible, and she made no attempt to cover them.

Tang Zheng had no interest in looking at her. He opened the door, hesitating between leaving and catching up to see if there was an opportunity to scavenge.
