Chapter 1162: Chapter 41: Danger Everywhere
Susan, like a startled squirrel, tightly followed Tang Zheng, gazing at his broad and upright back, feeling a sense of security. Then her face turned red—she realized she was beginning to like this man.
Tang Zheng opened the door and looked around to make sure it was clear before entering the corridor. Even though Susan was quite attractive and willing to get involved with him, he wouldn’t waste his energy.
"Let’s not go there; it’s too dangerous." Susan, seeing over a dozen devastated corpses strewn across the corridor and soaked in blood, was frightened and grabbed Tang Zheng’s backpack.
"They’ve passed through; they must have cleared all the zombies." Tang Zheng found a random reason to appease Susan, who didn’t like to think and couldn’t understand the reason, but to be cautious, he added, "If you’re afraid, you can leave on your own."
"No, I want to stay with you." Susan quickly clarified her stance, diverting her attention.
As they turned a corner, a corpse that only consisted of the lower half came into Tang Zheng’s sight. Its upper half was shredded, revealing trampled intestines and internal organs. Although there was no skull, Tang Zheng recognized it was the unlucky Steven—not only because of the similar clothes but also the wounds on his leg that he had inflicted.
As they moved on, corpses appeared every few meters. The newbies couldn’t escape the Tyrant’s massacre, but the intervals between the dead bodies grew larger at the back because only the stronger ones remained, leveraging the killing time to flee further distances.
Tang Zheng jogged a bit and stopped in front of a laboratory entrance.
"What’s wrong?" Susan asked, puzzled. She held her gun and surveyed the surroundings, not completely useless.
"Remember, next time regardless of where you look, move your muzzle there to ensure you can fire at any moment," Tang Zheng advised, noticing bullet marks on the electronic lock—clearly, a survivor had shot it open to hide inside. "Is it a newbie or the group leader?"
Tang Zheng slowly pushed the door open, peeking through the crack.
"Say something, there’s someone here," Tang Zheng instructed Susan, as people usually perceive women as weaker and are less alert.
"Who’s there?" Despite Susan’s prattling, she caught Tang Zheng’s stern look, stuck out her tongue playfully, and then shouted inside, "Come out, the Tyrant is gone."
No response, but Tang Zheng had already heard the heavy breathing inside.
"You’re being paranoid, there’s no one here." Susan didn’t want to stay any longer and was eager to leave this dreadful place.
"It’s not a zombie, right? Wait while I kill him," Tang Zheng deliberately said aloud for the person inside to hear, firing two bullets toward the suspected location. The person immediately jumped out.
"Don’t shoot; I’m human!" A man shouted, but he didn’t come out of hiding, clearly suspicious of those outside.
"What are you sneaking around for? Got something to hide?" Tang Zheng took the initiative to disrupt the other’s judgment.
"No, I am a good person," a Caucasian hesitated for a moment before stepping out, still pointing his shotgun at the door where Tang Zheng stood.
"British? Are you the only one left?" Tang Zheng lowered his gun, which reassured the Caucasian enough to lower his weapon as well, aiming for peaceful coexistence.
"Yes, the Tyrant was too fast; I couldn’t outrun it. Remembering you went into a room, I copied your tactic, never thought I’d actually survive," the man confessed, driven to act out of desperation.
"Tang, look, it’s Laurie’s corpse," Susan, looking around, discovered the body of the red-haired woman torn in half, feeling sorrowful.
"Together? We are about to leave this place and need manpower. Tang Zheng said, not fond of the cautious Caucasian, who couldn’t possibly win his favor even if he spent a week trying.
"Can you help me look for my companions?" The Caucasian was testing Tang Zheng, also wanting to strengthen his own side, having heard from the group leader that everyone here was an enemy.
"Your companions are probably all dead," Susan disliked the man, irritated by how men always seemed to steal glances at her chest.
"No, the group leader is very strong," the Caucasian shook his head, deciding to stick with the Asian man for a while to assess his abilities before secretly ending him. As for the woman, he thought it’d be a waste not to use her after killing Tang Zheng.
"What does your group leader do that you trust him so much?" Tang Zheng feigned curiosity, but the Caucasian remained tight-lipped, shaking his head and refusing to divulge anything.
"Don’t reveal my identity, don’t easily trust anyone," the Caucasian recalled the group leader’s advice, approaching Tang Zheng to shake hands, "Pleased to meet you."
"Me too." Tang Zheng smiled, but internally he scoffed, noting the guy shook hands with his left, keeping his right hand on his leg holster, ready to draw his Glock at any moment.
Unable to keep him around any longer, as Tang Zheng grasped the other’s hand, his left hand reached down to his thigh, pulling out the straight knife from its sheath, slashing towards the Caucasian’s throat, while his left hand pulled forcefully, throwing off his balance.
The Caucasian, never expecting Tang Zheng to suddenly make a move, reached for his gun instinctively, leaning back, but lost his footing only to see the matte-electroplated black blade flash across his neck like a hawk in the black night.
When the Caucasian saw the copious amounts of bright red blood spurting out, he only then felt an intense pain, wanted to roar, but his trachea had burst, and he could not utter a sound.
With a thrust, Tang Zheng flicked his hand back, driving the straight knife into the Caucasian’s temple, and the man collapsed like a mound of soft mud.
"Ah!" Susan was splashed across the face with blood and, seeing Tang Zheng kill a man with his own hands, was too shocked for words — this wasn’t a zombie, it was a living person.
"Stop shouting, do you want to attract the zombies?" Tang Zheng pulled out the straight knife and wiped it on the man’s clothes a few times before sheathing it back into the knife sheath.
"Are you crazy? Why did you kill him?" Susan didn’t understand why someone who was just exchanging pleasantries and shaking hands a moment ago would attack.
"If I hadn’t killed him, we would be dead. Think about which hand he used when he shook hands with me?" Tang Zheng would not leave any hidden dangers.
"Right, his left hand, he kept his right hand by his thigh the entire time," Susan realized suddenly and hurriedly apologized to Tang Zheng, "I’m so sorry, I misjudged you."
"It’s okay, but be careful. If you keep being reckless, you’ll end up dead sooner or later."
Susan patted her chest, relieved. These guys were really cunning. She hadn’t seen the mocking smile that slipped out of the corner of Tang Zheng’s mouth as he turned around.
"Idiots." Tang Zheng thought of Dong Zixuan and his group, hoping they weren’t foolish enough to trust strangers. If it hadn’t been for the chance to capitalize on an opportunity, he wouldn’t have followed up.
Though the physical abilities of the two group leaders were limited, their experience was intact. Resilient as cockroaches, they continuously sniped at the Tyrant while fleeing. The newbies had already died out, and Tang Zheng followed the trail of blood in pursuit.
Five minutes later, in the waste treatment area, Tang Zheng found a large pool of blood and one of the British group leader’s arms. The floor and walls here had been damaged, revealing the pipes inside, which were ceaselessly spraying clean water.
"Not dead yet!" Tang Zheng estimated another three hundred meters and he would find the guy’s corpse. Instead, he found only the Tyrant’s arm, and the ground was increasingly covered with broken flesh and blood, adding up to more than five gallons. Humans didn’t have that much blood, clearly, the Tyrant had sustained heavy damage.
The two group leaders also had their captures. They carefully discovered that biochemical bullets and Type 3 hand grenades could cause damage to the Tyrant and managed to escape to this spot with the help of these weapons.
"This is bad, they might get away." Tang Zheng surveyed the surrounding layout, and the situation was not looking optimistic.
This was the waste treatment area, where alloy pipelines were intertwined like tangled blood vessels, and some liquids emitting a pungent smell were flowing out from the broken walls of some pipes, dropping into the puddles on the ground and beginning to boil, while some contained steam that constantly spurted out.
After a few more meters, Susan saw a small transport vehicle flipped over to the side, and the cultivation tanks it carried had fallen and shattered on the ground, all filled with bizarrely shaped creatures making her feel nauseous.
"Let’s get away from here." Susan got scared. In one of the cultivation tanks, there was a guinea-pig-like animal covered with tumors and three heads, looking like a severely ill patient in respiratory failure, its eyes bulging with hatred as it glared at them.
Before Tang Zheng could respond, a zombie brown bear smeared in fresh blood with a leg in its mouth suddenly pounced from a corner, charging toward him.
Susan immediately raised her gun and fired. Although she hit her target, it was sadly ineffective against the thick-skinned zombie bear.
"What do we do?" Susan completely panicked.
"Run, hide!" Tang Zheng shouted, aiming at the bear’s head as the muzzle flame from the M4A1 burst out, and bullets whistled forth, hitting repeatedly.
Bursts of blood splattered as the zombie bear roared, raising an arm to shield its head.
"Why aren’t you running?" Susan nodded, then turned and ran, only to find that Tang Zheng was still standing in the same spot, which alarmed her.
The speed of the zombie bear had slightly reduced, but shielding its head caused significant trouble for Tang Zheng’s shooting.
"Quite clever." Tang Zheng pressed the ammo clip release button, then yanked a new one from his tactical vest and loaded it, maintaining firepower while beginning to retreat toward a nearby steel frame that had a ladder he could climb.
Tang Zheng’s shooting skills were precise; as the zombie bear’s arm did not completely cover its head, the exposed forehead and chin became his targets, which he hit continuously.
The foolish Susan, who fled back the same way she came, cursed herself for her stupidity and immediately ran toward the ladder, climbing up desperately. Tang Zheng, realizing he couldn’t finish off the zombie bear for the moment, also quickened his retreat.
Roaring, the zombie bear grabbed the ladder, pulling forcefully. Amid squeaking sounds, the nuts loosened, and the ladder was about to fall off the wall, making the steel frame shake subtly, like during an earthquake.
Susan was about to go insane with fear, panicking and barely catching herself from falling.
"Don’t rush!" Tang Zheng shouted as he shouldered his rifle, wishing he could shoot Susan for being so slow, but he didn’t do so. Instead, he drew his M9F with one hand and attacked the zombie bear, then suddenly realized that Susan had frozen in place. (To be continued.
