Chapter 1132: Chapter 17 Biochemical Attack
"Su Su, hurry up and get on," Officer Zhou Meng shouted. He had a fondness for Su Su and wanted to secure a good seat for her, knowing that it would be very crowded.
This loud shout also shifted the gaze of some American pedestrians their way.
Tang Zheng was about to warn him when suddenly, an explosion erupted. Everyone turned toward the sound and saw a skyscraper not far away, mid-section belching black smoke as it burst into towering flames.
The Americans exclaimed and immediately dialed the fire department.
"Is this a terrorist attack? We still had seven minutes until the half-hour mark," Zhao Dongtao said, glancing at his watch, his face filled with astonishment.
"Don’t just stand there; get on the bus," Tang Zheng urged, his brow deeply furrowed. "We’ve really let our guard down this time; the half-hour was clearly a lie."
"Really? Terrorists have no credibility?" Zhou Meng couldn’t believe it. "Or could it have been an accidental explosion?"
No sooner had the officer finished speaking than a Ford sedan about ten meters away suddenly exploded with a boom. The car was engulfed in flames, lifted into the air, and then crashed down, flattening another car. A black man was hit in the chest by flying metal debris and immediately fell, a pool of blood forming underneath him. Those nearby were also unlucky, as the blast wave threw them chaotically about.
Pedestrians panicked and fled, but this terrorist attack had only just begun. The building exploded again, and a supermarket on the same street went up as well, with huge flames bursting out the entrance and glass slag scattering with the blast wave.
"Get on now." With chaos reigning, Tang Zheng no longer worried about hiding his identity and yelled.
Survivors were too concerned to pay, pushing their way toward the entrance of McDonald’s. Other diners, worried about the danger, also fled without paying, adding to the confusion at the scene. Fortunately, most of the survivors had managed to secure a good position about ten seconds earlier. Yet, some were slower to react, including a woman whose daughter was left behind. She held her child and cried out loudly for help, but to no avail.
"A bunch of trash," Tang Zheng cursed under his breath, dropping his backpack and pulling out a shotgun. He then rushed off the school bus to assist the mother and daughter. "Uncle Wang, start the car; drive as soon as I get on."
"Zhou Meng, Xu Zhifeng, you’re in charge of maintaining order and arranging seats," Dong Zixuan said as she pulled out a Benelli M4 and followed suit.
"Move, get out of the way!" Although the Tyrannosaurus Protective Clothing had lost its defensive ability, the face mask still worked. Tang Zheng put it on and roared as he charged toward McDonald’s.
Due to the explosion, Long Street was chaotic, and some of the patrons didn’t notice Tang Zheng’s shouts.
"You’re making me resort to violence," Tang Zheng said unapologetically. Wielding the shotgun, he swung left and right. A black youngster who didn’t duck was struck in the head and instantly knocked over.
Tang Zheng pulled a shotgun shell from his pocket, loaded it into the magazine, then grabbed the tactical handguard and yanked it hard, cocking the gun with a click, and fired at the glass of McDonald’s.
Bang, crash—the window shattered, and this noise stunned the crowd trying to push their way out. Seeing a masked man wielding the dark muzzle of a gun coming toward them, they started to retreat.
There were too many people; it was hard for them to step back. Without a second word, Tang Zheng began smashing his way through, knocking everyone to the ground and stepping over bodies to enter the lobby.
"Let’s go," Tang Zheng said as he grabbed the little girl and dashed outside.
"We need to hurry; the nearby roads will surely be congested due to the explosion," Dong Zixuan said as she picked up the child, assisting another mother and daughter.
"This was a miscalculation." The lack of contingency time made Tang Zheng very frustrated.
"Don’t be discouraged; you’ve done well," Dong Zixuan encouraged Tang Zheng, not wanting him to lose confidence which would throw the team into disarray.
"Do I look like that kind of person?" Tang Zheng retorted. He ran up to the school bus and saw about a dozen newbies crowded together, shouting for the people in front to move faster. Those who had already entered the carriage felt much safer and slowed their pace, even taking the time to look for the best seats. As for those at the back, they didn’t care about anyone else, further delaying the process.
A woman, unable to squeeze through, simply walked to the back and climbed in through the car window.
"Everyone, take a seat and hurry up. There are still people behind you; don’t block the way," yelled the miner captain, but unfortunately, no one listened to him.
Dong Zixuan gave a bitter smile, acknowledging how selfish some people could be, though there were those who considered the greater good.
"Keep an eye on your daughter, don’t fall behind," Tang Zheng instructed as he let go of the girl, took a few steps forward, then sprinted toward the front of the car. Suddenly, with a leap, he dived through the open car window into the carriage.
"Are you alright?" Tang Zheng tumbled onto his classmate Li Yumiao, quickly got up, apologized, then wielding the shotgun, dashed back out.
"Sit down and make way. What are you picking?" Tang Zheng forcefully cleared the aisle between two rows of seats, causing a few of the battered newbies to yell and glare venomously at his retreating figure, wishing they could shoot him.
It took two more minutes for Tang Zheng to finally get everyone on the bus, during which a shop not far away exploded.
"Uncle Wang, drive. Go straight first, then turn right at the crossroad," Tang Zheng instructed. He didn’t hand the map to Uncle Wang, as he probably couldn’t multitask, but rather vocalized the route to help him adjust.
"Zixuan, you lead the way." Tang Zheng returned to the driver’s seat, noticed that the backpack next to him was missing, and immediately became annoyed. "Who took my backpack?"
Due to the constant explosions, the newbies were very scared and remained silent, so it was very quiet in the carriage. Hearing Tang Zheng’s roar, they looked around anxiously.
"Wow, a shotgun, what a beauty, much cooler than the five-round one I used before." A young man with a long face didn’t care about Tang Zheng at all and, with three friends, excitedly rummaged through the backpack, boasting about his experiences, "Last time I went to Tibet, I hunted a yak."
The four of them were travel enthusiasts who liked to travel independently. Seeing the firearms, they naturally couldn’t let go, and the backpack they were turning over was Tang Zheng’s.
"Damn, didn’t you hear me talking?" Tang Zheng, usually good-natured, couldn’t help but curse, walked over briskly, grabbed the long-faced man by the collar, lifted him, and punched him in the face.
"What are you doing? Did I provoke you?" The long-faced man and his friends, being seasoned travelers with well-exercised bodies and clever minds, had rushed out at the sight of the school bus, so they were among the first to get on. They didn’t help maintain order but took the backpack with weapons to choose from.
Tang Zheng didn’t answer, but punched him in the stomach again.
"Fuck, do you think I’m easy to bully?" The long-faced man got angry and, having three friends with him, yelled loudly and struck back at Tang Zheng’s temples.
"Let him go," the three friends of the long face also stood up, glaring angrily at Tang Zheng.
"Who dares to move?" Zhao Dongtao stepped forward, rolled up his sleeves ready to fight, and a few men who were on good terms with Tang Zheng during middle school also swiftly stood up.
There was slight chaos in the carriage.
"No one is allowed to fight." Li Wenbo tried to control the situation, showing his ability and even pulled out a handgun to threaten everyone.
"Put the gun away, be careful of accidental injury," Dong Zixuan frowned and warned her colleague.
Seeing the newbies actually resist, Tang Zheng hit harder. Besides the carrot, the stick was necessary as well; just take this guy as a warning to others.
Tang Zheng’s strength, even at the level of ordinary people, coupled with the experience and skills from over a dozen life-and-death struggles, was more than the long-faced man could handle.
Facing the punch of the long-faced man, Tang Zheng quickly grabbed his wrist, shifted to the side, leaned slightly forward with his left leg as the pivot, and brought his right knee up hard into his lower abdomen.
The long-faced man coughed up some acidic water and then fell to the ground clutching his stomach. Tang Zheng followed with a punch to his cheek, then turned his head to dodge a punch from a friend of the long face and pushed his palm against that guy’s chin.
Bang, the short-haired misfortunate immediately fell backward, half slumping into the seat, his head spinning, unable to stand.
"What, thinking of drawing a gun?" Tang Zheng stared at the other two friends of the long face.
"Aren’t you a bit too harsh?" Hu Hong swallowed, intimidated by Tang Zheng’s ferocity.
"If you’re dissatisfied, you can leave this team," Tang Zheng scanned the newbies in the carriage, "Look at yourselves just now, a loose sand formation, aren’t you ashamed?"
"Here, individual power is always weak; if you want to survive, you need to unite and cooperate. But what about you? With such quality, who would dare to entrust you with their backs?"
"Listen to Tang Zheng; he’s right," Uncle Wang interjected, pleased with the rescue operation Tang Zheng had just carried out, "Without his efforts, we’d still be in chaos now, unable to start moving, to escape this damned place."
"I definitely support you," Zhao Dongtao harshly eyed those four selfish ghosts, "We can get rid of them."
Tang Zheng had beaten them severely, and Zhao Dongtao worried they might seek revenge or act maliciously behind their backs, especially if Li Wenbo rallied them, which prompted him to make such a suggestion.
"You want me as group leader just to use me as cannon fodder, don’t you?" Li Wenbo raised another objection, "After all, you are most familiar with this game, setting us up without anyone knowing."
Once the seed of doubt was planted, it was hard to eradicate it, and Li Wenbo calculated this precisely to smear Tang Zheng, but unfortunately, he miscalculated Dong Zixuan.
"What do you mean by that? At least Tang Zheng has been working for everyone, but what about you?" Dong Zixuan was quite dissatisfied, pointedly blaming Li Wenbo.
"Look, even your colleagues despise you, how miserable can you get?" Zhao Dongtao mocked Li Wenbo, who glared fiercely at him.
Tang Zheng was about to explain when a woman’s scream interrupted him.
"Look outside, what is that monster?" Following the woman’s scream, everyone’s gaze swiftly turned to the window, and then they saw a large group of zombies emerging from the subway exit, attacking pedestrians wildly.
"Are those zombies?" Xiao Hu exclaimed, having played Biohazard; at this moment, these monsters resembled those zombies exactly. (To be continued. If you like this work, you are welcome to vote for it at Starting Point (qidian.com)), your support is my greatest motivation.)
