Chapter 54: The Unusual Gate Node (7)
Rise watched Kamille’s expression; he did not feel disappointed though when he barely saw any change. Kamille was not like him, who always wore his heart on his sleeves in the other’s presence.
Kamille brushed his hair slightly, then turned back at him.
"Do you need to be guided?"
For Espers who overspent their abilities, it always needed immediate action. Kamille had every reason to worry about this. Unlike him, who had Rise as his guide.
Before Rise could answer, Kamille asked another question.
"Or... Can you guide youself?" It sounded ridiculous even to him, but it was also a valid question. Since he had not seen any case like Rise before, as he was a guide, how impossible was it that he could also guide himself?
Rise blinked, processing the question, then suddenly burst out laughing. A memory of the past also flashed in his mind.
If he remembered it right, both of them had a conversation like this before.
Both of them spent a week inside a special gate, they were with the party when they entered, but they suddenly got separated from the others, to which Rise celebrated inside.
"Do you think I can guide myself, Guild Leader?" Rise had asked out of the blue, both of them sitting inside a huge boulder, looking at the endless worms on the ground.
Kamille, who openly used "hellfire" and incinerated the worms, turned and looked at him. For a moment, his gaze clearly showed how he viewed the question, seemingly wondering how Rise could ask such a stupid question.
Rise, not offended by the gaze, instead became pleased.
"Why not, Guild Leader? Do you think it’s not possible? I’m also a guide."
Kamille fell silent, as though he also began to question it. Was it really possible? He stared at the stupidly enthusiastic Rise.
In the end, he sighed and let Rise try and confirm his guess.
"Try it. Try to guide yourself and we’ll see." Kamille’s lips even twitched, the sentence sounded odd however you look at it.
And so, with approval, Rise tried it, and the result...
Rise, who returned his attention to the present, shook his head.
"I can’t guide myself," Rise answered, this conversation waking up his nostalgia and also making him laugh.
Looking back, he finally realized how ridiculous his question was then. And he could not believe that Kamille was the one who would bring it up this time.
Kamille averted his gaze; he seemed to finally realize how absurd his question was. He suddenly became embarrassed, choosing not to look at Rise or he might give himself away.
Rise laughed harder. Of course, even if he wanted to expose and tease Kamille, he did not do so. He did not want his growing points to suddenly return to zero.
Still, his laugh was enough.
Kamille shifted his gaze back at him, obviously not pleased with Rise’s playful laughter.
Rise instantly bit his lips, holding back his laughter. He really liked Kamille’s cute side. He could not see it often, but when he did, he just wanted to throw himself to the other and kiss his face repeatedly.
"Well... I may not be able to guide myself, but don’t worry, Guild Leader. It’s fine; even if no one guided me, I’ll survive."
To be able to divert the topic, while also explaining his ability, he began to tell Kamille what he was capable of.
Rise had also only discovered this after knowing he was a guide. He did not need a guide, and his body seemed to gradually neutralize the mana toxins itself because of his physique as a guide.
While he continued to seek a guide, it was unnecessary and only for appearance’s sake. Otherwise, the others would become suspicious as to why he was not seeking any guiding.
This was also the reason why he was not too attached to guides even then, unlike other Espers. Since, he always thought they were ineffective since he did not feel any special.
After listening to this, Kamille finally nodded as though relieved. He was not so selfish as to only look after his own well-being. Unless he advised Rise not to use his abilities inside the gate and only help him as a guide.
It was not just him; Kamille was aware Rise would not agree. He was a guide, but he was not only that. Rise was also an Esper and had a pride of being one.
"That’s good." Kamille nodded. "Shall we continue?"
They had rested enough. Kamille had also begun to take this gate seriously after what he had been through.
This was not any ordinary A-rank gate. Its node had a special and strange characteristic.
Kamille stood up first and then offered his hand instinctively, which Rise gladly accepted as he stood up with the other’s support.
They did not immediately withdraw their hand; instead, Kamille looked around and spoke.
"We arrive in this cave through here." He pointed at the small cave pool. It had only registered to him how incomprehensible their experience was.
After diving through the bottomless lake and swimming with an unknown destination but that white shining light, Kamille had found this exist. He was already exhausted then, and so he did not ponder too much.
"Wow. This gate is batshit insane." Rise suddenly exclaimed. His thoughts were similar to Kamille’s.
Are you telling him that bottomless lake leads to this fucking small pool and this cave somehow was underneath that muddy swamp? Wait... Or was it the other way around?
Rise pursed his lips and decided to teach that scam Blue Guild a lesson next time.
Unbeknownst to them, the Blue Guild suddenly offended Rise, albeit it was one-sided.
"That node better be worth the shit I’ve been through." Rise continued with his one-man show of cursing, venting his frustration.
Kamille also did not interrupt him; unconsciously, a small smile lifted on his lips.
That small episode then ended, and the two continued with their gate raid date, as per Rise, being the delusional he was. Walking side by side, unfortunately, Kamille withdrew his hand when he had to check something, and Rise did not have any chance to grab Kamille’s hand again as the Guild Leader was already in his mission mode.
After walking around the cave, Rise even expected that they might also walk endlessly, similar to what happened underwater.
Fortunately, this gate was not insane enough for that. Or... was it?
The two paused; their gaze stopped in one direction.
