Chapter 53: The Unusual Gate Node (6)
Rise’s terrible personality was known to all. He was also the type who would sneer even in the most dangerous situation, not minding life and death.
However surprising it might be for others, Rise could also cry, and he was not ashamed to show his vulnerability to Kamille. He did not think there was something wrong with it.
In the years that he was with Kamille, Rise had learned how to depend on and rely on others. He was not a lone wolf anymore.
"He must be so exhausted," Rise brushed Kamille’s dark hair with his fingers. His soft gaze watched Kamille sleep, pillowing on his lap.
Their situation had reversed, now that he was awake, it was now time for Kamille to relax and sleep.
Rise smiled; despite the obvious reddened eyes from crying too much, his smile still looked so beautiful but tinged with unusual fragility.
Kamille did not often sleep inside the gate. He was able to do so with his good physique and mentality. As an S-class Esper, Kamille was able to endure little to no rest inside the gate.
And strictly speaking, Kamille was definitely not an S-rank, he was above that.
However, Rise noticed that Kamille really needed this rest. After he was completely guided by Rise, it only took a minute before Kamille deeply fell asleep.
That was such an exhausting and terrifying experience, one that tested one’s mentality, and so Rise was not surprised that even Kamille was affected.
Watching Kamille peacefully asleep, Rise could not help but trace the other’s handsome face. His reddened eyes glinted softly as he smiled.
"Deep inside... You still trust me, don’t you?"
Rise whispered with a hopeful heart. It did not matter if he was looking too much into it and Kamille was that exhausted to care and fell asleep, but he already claimed it as fact.
Sighing slightly, Rise leaned on the wall and closed his eyes. The unpleasant experience, lingered in his memory.
He became emotional, but as he said, he never felt ashamed, showing his vulnerability to Kamille. However, it still gave him a bitter taste in his mouth.
"Ahhh, how pathetic," Rise muttered under his breath, incredibly frustrated.
He opened his eyes and was greeted by the sight of the ceiling, the glowing stalactites illuminated their surroundings.
And now he just realized, they seemed to be inside a huge cave.
Rise fell into contemplation and stared at the ceiling, not caring if his eyes got irritated by the light. He was suddenly weirded out.
"This is not how I remembered it."
Rise could not delve deeper into it earlier, since he was too preoccupied by the disgusting muddy swamp, and then they swam for seemingly like an eternity.
After passing out and waking up, he became emotional and cried while guiding Kamilled, filled with guilt.
Now that everything calmed down and Rise returned to his usual self, he finally pondered over this main issue.
Wait, did those Blue bastards, scam me?
Rise frowned and immediately dismissed this guess.
To begin with, the Blue Guild had not revealed everything about this gate. Even the location was only an approximate location and not the exact location.
It was strange but not too impossible for a top guild, the second rank guild, to not disclose everything of their ventures to the public.
Still, did they have to conceal about the swamp and that bottomless lake? If that were the case, Rise would not choose this hell. He hated something like the endurance test.
He was never one with a lot of patience.
Rise lowered his gaze and stared at Kamille, seemingly in a daze for a few seconds. His fingers traced the other’s jaw, deep in thought.
All of a sudden, he paused and became motionless, his brows connected with a frown.
"How can that dude clear this gate?"
This did not make sense. Both him and Kamille were too exhausted as they passed through the bottomless lake, and Kamille even needed to carry him halfway as he had already passed out.
That dude from Blue was only a B-rank Esper. His mana reserves or capacity were incomparable to his, much less Kamille’s. And about having a strong mentality, while he was defeated, Rise would not agree if someone claimed that dude had a stronger mentality than his.
And so... how?
Unless... That dude did not pass through the lake, got luckier, and went through another passage. However, this could be debunked immediately.
If he could, Kamille naturally had the means to do so. If Kamille could see another much easier route than the lake, he would lead them there instead.
Another more realistic possibility.
The lake’s difficulty would increase depending on how powerful the challenger was. And this time, Kamille, the stronger of the two, became the upper limit of the challenge.
Tricky.
Rise muttered disdainfully. That dude definitely got lucky because he was a low-ranker.
As Rise pondered about all these possibilities, time passed, and not for long Kamille showed signs of waking up.
He was immediately snapped out of his thoughts, and all his attention was fixated immediately on the other, pillowing in his lap.
Slowly, Kamille’s eyes opened, which immediately met Rise’s.
He seemed out of it at first and gradually recognized Rise.
"Why don’t you sleep some more?" Rise softly inquired, his hushed voice still echoed slightly inside an enclosed space. However, it did not appear eerie but emphasized the softness in his tone.
Kamille stared at Rise for a few seconds before he shook his head and sat up.
"No need. How long did I fall asleep?"
"Probably just over an hour." Rise was not sure; maybe it was even less than that.
When he answered, Kamille paused, seemingly stunned. It only took a moment before he returned to his usual composed expression, as though the change of expression did not happen.
Rise suddenly wanted to tease him but ultimately held back. He knew that Kamille was surprised since he had never slept that long inside the gate, and what was more with someone he barely knew.
Technically, even with their agreement and being intimate a few times, Rise was still a stranger with obvious ulterior motives at that.
Sleeping out in the open, inside the gate, was deemed vulnerable to any dangerous incidents. Kamille seemed calm and a reasonable Guild Leader but he was someone who would not trust anyone while he slept.
His trust issues were deep in his bones.
And so, when Rise said he could trust his back to him and fight with ease at that dungeon, he was already surprised.
Now, he again trusted Rise, and not just his back but his safety. Subconsciously, did he already trust Rise this much?
