Chapter 50: The Unusual Gate Node (3)
As they walked on the muddy ground, Rise’s shoes gradually accumulated mud beneath them, causing slight discomfort. It could be noted that even with the intense battlefield, there were only rare instances that Rise would be stained by either monsters or humans’ blood.
He was not much of a germaphobe, but he preferred to be clean. And this muddy swamp definitely did not meet that criteria.
Feeling the corner of his lips twitched, Rise tried to compose himself.
"Do we have other choice?"
Rise thought maybe he could still endure it if they only needed to pass through here but actually swim it or dive right in? He needed more concentration for that.
Kamille finally saw another side of Rise. He always thought Rise was someone who was indifferent to all things and he could endure any situation. It seemed he still had qualifications according to human standards.
"No," Kamille mercilessly shook his head. "We have to swim through it."
His True Sight could see something underneath, it had a huge mana concentration, which, like twinkling in a gray area, was extremely eye-catching.
For what was it? He was not sure, but it could really be the node.
Rise, a bit unwilling, and look at the water, which seemed more mud than water. Exhaling heavily, he unconsciously gripped Kamille’s arm firmly as if gathering courage.
"Then, we’ll swim." I mean, how bad could it be?
And time proved that it was really bad.
As Rise said, the water was more like a mud water. He felt like walking through mud when he finally soaked inside. The water was only through his waist when he truly confirmed this.
"G-Guild Leader," he called, almost screaming when he felt something pass through his legs, it was slimy and felt disgusting or uncomfortable.
Kamille then looked at him, there was now a slight amusement in his eyes. He was seeing Rise in a different light at this moment.
"What is it?" He asked, even if he did know. Kamille suddenly had the urge to tease Rise.
Rise bit his lips, the uncomfortable feeling of the mud around his body and not seeing all those disgusting creatures that brushed against his skin was making him slightly lightheaded.
"There seems to be something wrong in this water." Rise spoke fast, having a sense of urgency all of a sudden. "I feel like, swimming through here is really not a good idea, Guild Leader."
He just finished speaking when he again felt a disgusting slimy creature pass through his body, making him subconsciously gasp, Rise grabbed Kamille’s arm harder.
His body was trembling with disgust!
He was not scared, but like, he could even kill monsters bigger than himself, but that sometimes disgusting insects or creatures were more capable enough to make him scream and run.
Kamille averted his gaze and touched his jaw before biting his lips. He wanted to laugh somehow, but he did not want to annoy Rise for doing so.
Fortunately, he still managed to make his face composed like usual.
"If you don’t want to, then we can leave," Kamille suggested. Although he enjoyed Rise’s amusing side, he did not want to torment him either. Clearly, he dislikes this kind of place.
Rise paused, looked up at Kamille, and then at the muddy water, or more like mud. He became hesitant. His plan was to spend his time with Kamille and also gather some benefits while they were at it.
Would he give up? Just because he felt disgusted and so uncomfortable he wanted to wash up several times?
Rise might choose to do so if it did not involve Kamille.
He sighed and steeled himself.
"Maybe... Just maybe, I can do it."
"Really?" Kamille asked, unconvinced.
Rise bit his lips and gulped. "Yeah, I can do it. Really." Probably, he thought.
Kamille stared deeply at him, seemingly wanting to know what he truly felt. However, it had to be noted his pupils were not gray. Without even True Sight, it was not hard to see that Rise was really not okay with this.
Furrowing his brow, Kamille could not help but think. Why was Rise so stubborn? Was the node really important?
Moving forward, Rise suddenly blurted out again.
"How can we swim in this kind of water?" It was mud, okay? So, could they really swim in here? How would they know the destination?
Rise could not imagine how it was possible, he for sure would not be able to open his eyes inside. He did not want to, either.
"Also, it’s not that deep."
Strictly speaking, it was indeed impossible to swim with this kind of depth. Not that it was impossible, but more like unnecessary.
"Is it?" Kamille finally could not help but smile. "Do you really think so?" He turned to Rise, asking with a playful tone.
If the Guild members were to see him, they would be surprised and would immediately accuse Rise of being the culprit, badly influencing their Guild leader.
Rise blinked, dazed. Damn... He almost forgot the disgust he was feeling for this situation.
"Uhm, maybe? I’m not sure." He leaned and firmly embraced Kamille’s arm, lowering his gaze. His cheeks heated instantly.
Kamille did not have any clue how much he could influence Rise. Since he was not really like Rise, he patiently explained.
"It will go deeper. I don’t know how deep it will be."
Kamille’s True Sight was comparable to an omniscient eye, but it had not reached being all-knowing. He could pinpoint the direction, but it would be impossible to exactly calculate the depth of the lake.
However, knowing it was deep was enough, for now.
Rise’s expression twitched, his face pale.
A deep mud. Would it be really possible to swim here?
"You want to continue?" Kamille’s voice sounded again, giving Rise the choice. As after all, this was part of their deal, and Rise was the one who had the right to make the call.
Between his disgust and being with Kamille, naturally the latter won. Rise closed his eyes firmly and when he opened them again, there was now a kind of determination in them.
There was no way just a mere muddy water could disrupt his plans!
"Of course, we should continue." Rise’s rare side, only Kamille could see.
His hands trembled, but Kamille never exposed him. Instead, he slowed down his pace, letting Rise adapt to it.
As they went deeper, the mud seemed particularly heavy for some reason. It was now at their chest.
Even with this, Rise still found himself unconvinced that they could swim here. However, he also knew that Kamille would not joke about this.
Suddenly, Kamille stopped. Rise also paused, looking at his guild leader with a question in his eyes.
"We can swim from here." Kamille swept his gaze and scanned the surroundings with his eyes, gradually becoming vigilant.
Rise also noticed this. He was just about to ask something but noticed Kamille became vigilant as opposed to his calm expression.
He was disgusted, sure, but Rise was still an Esper and had been through so many life-and-death situations. Immersing with the battlefield, Rise could also do that, even forgetting the disgust for a moment.
Rise also roamed his eyes around. Aside from the muddy water, and some disgusting creatures under the water, he could not feel any threat in the air.
Probably, that was really the problem at this gate. Ever since they arrived here, this gate lacked the usual element a higher-ranked gate should have.
It was too ordinary to the point of abnormality. This saying best applies here.
"Here," Kamille handed something, which Rise immediately took.
It was a colored black full mask. In terms of appearance, it looked dull, it also did not look practical and had not much use with their current situation.
Yet, since it came from Kamille, it had to be useful.
"A miscellaneous artifact that can help us breathe underwater." Kamille also waved a similar artifact in his hand.
"This can help us breathe underwater?" Rise scrutinized the full mask, and tilted his head.
Its design was more like for concealing one’s identity rather than an underwater equipment. Rise also could not see any feature that points in this direction.
"Most artifacts don’t have logic in them," Kamille commented, seeing his confusion.
Which was true, most lower-end artifacts, even those higher-ranked ones, sometimes did not have any relation to their names or even with how they were used and their forms.
Rise did not find it hard to believe this time. He even had quite a few artifacts with useless and unrelated items. They are merely there to become souvenirs rather than to be really used.
Of course, as artifacts were magical itself, they could be handy in the future.
Just like this mask.
"It also protects our face from being dirty." Kamille continued and looked at Rise’s expression.
Sure enough, Rise seemed relieved to hear that. At least, the mud could not go inside his nostrils or mouth. He was glad.
He looked up and leaned his head to Kamille’s shoulder, being coquettish as a thank you for this consideration.
