Chapter 49: The Unusual Gate Node (2)

Rise was someone who enjoyed being cryptic just to annoy others; he loved it when they wanted to actually lunge at him, but they always resisted this urge because of who he was.

It was pretty funny and let his boredom get away for a moment.

However, since it was Kamille, while he was sometimes not straightforward in order to tease him, Rise still continued and was direct in the end.

Without waiting for Kamille to answer him, seeing he again captured all his attention, Rise leaned slightly as if this was such a big secret that only two of them were allowed to know.

"What if, it’s not that they let this gate exist for this long because they don’t really can’t clear it?" Rise smiled and finally showed to be direct when Kamille’s eyebrows were slightly furrowed.

"Guild Leader, the node... Let’s find it." Rise sounded excited for some reason, everything that had to do with exploring gates excites him.

"How can we find it?" Kamille narrowed his eyes, waiting for the answer.

Thinking about it, this gate was indeed unusual. It was so ordinary that it was overlooked, but this abnormality lay precisely on this.

This time, Rise sheepishly smiled, then shook his head. "I don’t know."

Kamille stared at him, speechless.

Rise defended, "This is just my conjecture, but it’s highly likely to be true! Of course, I also don’t know where the node, since I never visited this gate before."

Kamille also thought it made sense. It was just strange because Rise started off high and mysterious, as though he already knew and calculated everything.

He almost wanted to facepalm but quickly composed himself.

"It’s fine." Kamille looked around; his gaze quickly turned deep, scanning his surroundings. "We can just find it."

Rise watched Kamille, smiling deep inside. In fact, Rise really did not know where it was, but he at least knew the general direction. Of course, he did not tell the truth because he did not want to come off as suspicious, but more of, he did not want to find the node too quickly.

Kamille already had True Sight, and if Rise even told him the general direction, narrowing down the options, they would easily find the node, which in turn would let them clear this gate and would affect their time together!

That won’t do!

Rise chose interesting gates specifically for this reason, to cultivate their feelings and also be in an exciting environment.

Leaving their position, the two walked further from the entrance. For some reason, they also did not encounter anyone. It was as if, the Espers who went inside deliberately did not take the path they used.

The trees had long been gone where they were, and the ground was slowly turning to soft mud, compared to the impoverished soil. It was dirty, though.

"Beats me, how does this gate exist for so long?" Rise commented, not letting the silence stretch for more than a minute.

Even when he knew something because two years later, someone in a top guild, Blue, would clear this gate. Rise remained puzzled about the logic of this.

Could it be that node was really magical?

The stingy guild did not disclose it, and so Rise, who naturally was not too nosey with other’s business unless it was interesting, never found out the truth about this.

For him, nodes, while there were monetary values, could hardly be used after they shattered. Some space-ability Users could use it, but so far no one in the federation has ever utilized it efficiently.

"The node might be special." Kamille’s interest grew; he was becoming invested in this.

If he only visited this place because of Rise, he now wanted to uncover the mystery behind this gate. With this, he could not help but take a look again at the man beside him.

Rise sensed this gaze and looked up. He did not know why Kamille was looking at him, but he still smiled.

"Possibly more than special?" Rise raised a brow, sporting a playful smile.

Kamille blinked, his gaze returned to that of hazel ones when he looked at Rise, but as he shifted his gaze again, it turned gray once more, indicating the True Sight is activated.

He nodded and murmured, "Beyond special."

Rise laughed, thinking he was talking about the node. Little did he know, Kamille was talking about him. Sadly, he did not know this.

For Kamille, Rise was both an Esper and a Guide, and at the same time, exhibiting a mysterious background was more special than all of the special anomalies combined.

His gaze turned deeper, resisting the urge to use his ability to Rise, wanting to know his secrets. Slowly, a small smile appeared on his lips.

Just a week, and Rise managed to challenge his resolve and patience.

Truly special.

Walking inside the gate with Kamille’s lead, both eventually stopped.

"A swamp?" Rise looked around, his shoes had long been stained with mud. "Wow, this place looks so different from the overall design of the gate." He commented casually, looking down and observing the water, or more like mud.

He then turned to Kamille and asked, "Are we flying to the other side?"

Rise was not a clean freak, but... This water was too dirty for his liking.

Surprisingly, Kamille rejected the idea.

"We’re not."

Dumbfounded, Rise fully turned to Kamille and acted coquettish once more, holding the taller’s arm.

"Why?" He pursed his lips and acted pitifully. "It’s too dirty, can we just fly?"

Kamille glanced at him, his eyelid twitching. Should he say Rise had good acting or that he was truly like this?

Sighing, he explained. "We don’t have to fly. This swamp, or under this swamp, is the node."

Rise, taken aback, paused. He stared at Kamille, then slowly shifted to the dirty swamp, which might even be housing so many diseases from beyond the gate. He then returned to Kamille.

"Are you serious?" Rise always believed Kamille, but like, if the node was under the swamp, did this mean they had to... swim underneath?

Swim in this muddy water? Really?

Kamille slowly confirmed and nodded.

"Yes, we’ll swim."

Rise’s hand weakened and almost let go of Kamille’s hand.

Not everyone knew, but Rise... Even if he did claim he was not a clean freak, in fact, he really was a bit of a clean freak.
