Chapter 48: The Unusual Gate Node (1)
Rise had long expected that there would be a lot of people waiting for them outside of the gate, and so his expression hardly changed.
As they descended at the center of the crowd, Kamille first withdrew his arm around Rise, but they still walked so close to each other, primarily because Rise did not move away even a bit.
Most people were already intimidated by the identities of the two, and so they did not notice or scrutinize anything too much.
"Wow, this place is quite lively!" Rise did not try to lower his voice, and everyone around him, especially for Espers with advanced hearing, could hear him loud and clear.
He sounded playful as he said this, giving off a friendly vibe.
Rise smiled at the staff in the booth of the Union, who could not even look at him directly in the eye.
He planned to joke around the Union staff, but Kamilled seemed to sense this and immediately beat him to it.
"Are we allowed to get it?" This was more like a formality as everyone was allowed inside, but they still needed to register at the booth. While the gate was open to the public, it was still subject to the government’s protection.
Which serves the Union as the gatekeeper.
The staff quickly nodded his head. He did not even need to make the two go through some procedures and instantly gave a green signal.
They did not stay for too long, and the reporters who were there seemed to become tongue-tied after seeing the two and forgot that they were there to ask Kamille and Rise some questions regarding the recent news of Rise being kicked out of the Union and suddenly joining the guild.
It only occurred to him as the two disappeared and went inside the gate. This realization quickly spread, and soon complaints reverberated in the area.
"Why Guild Leader Kamille and... that person set foot in this kind of gate?" One man from the crowd asked, feeling bewildered.
Could it be there was some kind of special thing inside the gate and they happened to get ahold of this news? It was impossible, but other than that, they could not think of any reason that warranted a visit from these two big shots.
Someone scratched his head and went along. "I don’t know. But it’s only the two of them!"
"Right. I only noticed it now."
"Could it be, Guild Leader Kamille is testing, ahem, training Rise?"
"Tsk. Do you think Rise needs training?"
Everyone could only sort to this kind of discussion after the person was already out of their sight.
The reason for the two’s arrival was truly baffling.
The voluptuous woman fell into contemplation as she looked inside the gate where the two figures disappeared just a couple of minutes ago. She sighed and stopped guessing.
Even if she managed to guess the reason, it was not like she would get the benefits of guessing it right. She soon looked at her party members and began to shout.
"Let’s go in as well."
What was important was raiding this gate and mining some mana stones; even a few could get their guild out of the financial crisis.
As the people outside speculated about their reason for coming here, the two in question had just started walking inside. Both looked relaxed, as if they were there for a vacation.
Rise walked alongside Kamille to the point of touching skin, not letting the distance between them lengthen in the slightest.
"This gate looks so deserted." Rise criticized nonchalantly, looking around without any interest in his eyes.
Normally, this kind of gate would not really catch his attention. He loves fighting, and so a gate that was already exploited for so many years by the Espers despite its high rank did not even deserve his presence.
Walking along the ruined forest, they could hardly see any intact trees or grass on the cracked grounds. It lacked the usual beauty of gates with its impoverished and contaminated appearance.
Kamille glanced at him and reminded him. "This isn’t a new gate and has been raided too many times."
Newly emerged gates obviously had resources inside as it was not yet explored, and so the rewards were rich despite the higher risks. Kamille was also only here because Rise chose this gate.
Rise did not argue with that as it was true, yet he still sneered. "It’s been around for years, but no one managed to find the node?"
He seemed to be heavily criticized, but at the same time, it sounded like laughing at their incompetence.
A cracking sound was heard as Kamille stepped on a monster’s head that was about to crawl out of the soil. The two did not even look at it as they continued, as if these poor monsters were merely decorations and fake actors of a haunted house.
"They can’t, or they don’t?" Kamille’s conjecture was that, not that they could not see the gate’s node, but they deliberately did not break it so the gate would not disappear.
Most of the gates with potential were used to be a resource or training field for the government or the gates.
As the name suggests, every gate had a node, which is how these invaders anchored the gate through this dimension, making it the most important part of the gate.
Breaking it would completely make the gate disappear; the term gate clear was also associated with it. However, the higher the rank it was, the harder it would be to find the gate node.
However, this gate had been around for years, and it was impossible for the node to be missed since it had been explored and exploited until it had become so deserted.
Rise, neither deny nor agree. He simply gave a knowing smile, the type that would make anyone want to punch but a certain someone itched for something.
"Is it really?" Rise stopped and looked at the huge tree in front of them. It was a dead tree; he did not have any value, even useless as a gate decoration. "Guild Leader, this gate... doesn’t have any value any more than some pitiful amount of mana stones."
Rise of this time did not care about this and it was impossible to know about it; it was all his future knowledge. The gate could hardly produce mana stones anymore, which was like a concentrated mana of the gate; the higher it was, the richer the mana mines were.
And so, most gates were purposely not cleared until they were completely exploited.
In terms of value, this gate had long reached its expiration date and should be cleared just fine. Even the monsters inside were so weak that they could hardly be called A-rank monsters anymore.
"It’s also odd. Guild Leader... Do you think it deserves being an A-rank gate?"
