Chapter 38: Offer

The content of the meeting was not much, as there were not any urgent gates to raid as of the moment. Aside from introducing the members of the temporary to each other, Kamille gathered the members for something else.

"The annual guild convention?" Rise repeated and fell silent.

That reminded him, there was really such an event. In terms of importance, the convention was just any gathering for guilds every year. Maybe, they could also show their power at the same time.

For small and medium guilds, however, it was an event that they could not afford to miss. Having the chance to form connections with guilds, especially if it was a top guild, was enough to make it their most important event of the year.

When he joined the guild, Rise also attended this gathering with Kamille and the party.

Kamille looked at them and revealed the information about the event this year.

"I gathered you here to inform you of the difference of this year’s convention." He paused and then looked at Hayes, who was also prepared for it, and stood up. He then distributed small folders to Rise and the other three.

Kamille nodded and let them read what was inside.

Rise also felt curious and flipped it. Inside the folder, there was a simple invitation with the Union’s logo in it. He was already familiar with it and did not read what was inside.

Generally, the content of the invitation was almost the same with few changes.

Beside the invitation, was a small pamphlet and a simple ring. Rise’s brow lifted and he took it, scrutinizing it. In his years attending the gathering, there seemed to only have the invitation and nothing else.

While they looked at the ring, Kamille continued calmly.

"The government has discovered a special gate. The main focus of this year’s convention is the gate. As the gate is very mysterious, the government is now letting the guilds investigate it with them..."

As he listened, something to have clicked in his mind as Rise’s eyes subtly flickered. He lowered his gaze and stared at the ring. An event quickly flashed in his mind.

Is it that...?

Kamille’s words were also not comprehensive, as, like him, they were all clueless about the special gate. They could only know about it once they arrived at the capital.

Special gates were deemed special obviously because of how mysterious they were. Their mechanics also seemed different than normal gates, often these special gates needed a "key" to get inside, unlike the normal gates, when one could just enter the passage leading inside.

Also, it was also hard to determine the rank of special gates just by the mana levels they emitted. Not only that, compared to normal gates, special gates only arrived in recent twenty years, making it harder to gauge their nature.

In terms of danger, special gates were riskier to venture into, but the rewards were equally richer.

Kamille only told them to prepare for it and dismissed them. In any case, the convention was still almost three weeks away, which also gave them enough time to prepare.

The members already left, except for Rise, of course. Soon, it was only the two of them inside the meeting room.

Rise played on the ring while watching Kamille, who appeared to also not bother to reprimand or make him leave.

"What is it?" After a while, seemingly unable to ignore Rise’s gaze anymore, Kamille lifted his gaze from what he was doing and looked at Rise.

Rise, leaning his back on the seat and his legs crossed, leisurely smiled. He actually did not have any questions to ask. He was deep in his thoughts, and just so happened to be staring too much at Kamille.

He then leaned slightly and decided to might as well start a conversation.

"Guild Leader, do you have any more information about the special gate?" Rise asked, seemingly too curious.

Kamille paused, then shook his head. "I already told all of you what I know."

"Then... Do you trust the government?"

This time, Kamille straightened his posture; his full attention was finally caught by Rise.

"What do you mean?"

A lazy smile appeared on his lips, and Rise shrugged.

"I don’t know. It’s just weird..."

Kamille watched him, listening intently as he continued.

"Special gates are dangerous, but the rewards are equally appetizing. The government will not let go of it or share it with the guilds. While Guilds are also human forces and can be said on the same side, the federation higher-ups also did not want to see the guilds become stronger. Unless..." He smiled and paused.

Kamille’s eyes narrowed slightly. Although, he did not seem surprised about this speculation, proving that he also thought of it.

"Unless, the government already knows something and is hiding it," Kamille continued for Rise. The other reason was also left unsaid.

If that were the case, the government would also be happy to let the guilds weaken a bit.

Rise’s face widened and nodded, agreeing with Kamille.

"As you know, Guild Leader. I was part of the Union, which also considers me as part of the government camp before." Even if he was saying that, Rise’s tone was casual when mentioning the Union and the government.

Clearly, he did not have any loyalty to them. Rise really did not have any of that. Joining the Union was only a means to legally accept missions; otherwise, he could just be a lone wolf.

Why not join a Guild? For Rise, the Union was not as restrictive as joining the guild.

Enjoying Kamille’s gaze, a mischievous glint flickered in his eyes, making his smile appear more bright and beautiful.

"I’ve been with them for years, so I know a bit of their operations." Rise’s tone suddenly became lower and lower, sounding like a devil seducing his prey.

Of course, Kamille was not a prey. If anything, he was the Lord of this devil.

Slowly, a ghost of a smile also appeared on Kamille’s lips.

"Oh? You’re telling me this because..."

Rise chuckled lowly. "Of course, I’ll tell you what I know, Guild Leader."

"Do you have any condition?" Kamille’s lips hooked with a smile, affected by Rise for some reason.

Rise shook his head lightly. "None of that. It’s free."

Kamille’s brows rose, seemingly unconvinced.

A menacing smile then curled on his lips.

"If you want, you can offer me something."

Kamille also leaned, his arms resting on the table, and asked.

"What do you want?"

Rise laughed, almost giggling. Soon, he leaned and whispered into Kamille’s ears.

Kamille paused and glanced at Rise, his gaze becoming deeper.
