Chapter 28: Joining The Guild

Chapter 28: Joining The Guild

"The government has already deposited the payment for the mission. And also we are now withdrawing from the red zone and the subsequent works are left for the federation. And... uhm, Guild Leader?"

Hayes, reporting at Kamille in his office, after talking for a few minutes now, finally noticed that the Guild Leader seemed busy looking at something on his tablet. It was unknown if he was even listening.

"Should I continue?"

Kamille shifted his gaze and at last, gave his second in command a glance.

"There’s no need. You can return." Kamille leaned on his chair and thought of something, "Also... Someone might come later. Just let him come up here."

Although curious as to who this person the Guild Leader was waiting for or what he was looking at on the screen, Hayes nodded.

"Yes, Guild Leader." Hayes then excused himself and left Kamille’s office.

Walking in the corridor, Hayes stopped and took his phone, thinking of looking for the latest news. "Who could it be?" Muttering, he continued walking while looking at his phone.

His footsteps then stopped, staring at his screen.

[Rise Lee, expelled from Union?]

[Union finally can’t stand Rise Lee!]

[The real reason for Rise Lee being expelled from Union, EXCLUSIVE!]

A bad feeling rose from his gut, and Hayes’ eyes widened. "Could it be?"

And this bad feeling quickly came through as a visitor, someone no one in the guild anticipated to visit.

"Rise?" The receptionist blurted out, really surprised. Seeing the one and only, even she could not control her emotions.

Rise was actually famous, especially for the people who like to gossip about scandals and rumors. He was an illustrious name in this field. And the receptionist seemed to be part of that community.

Rise’s brow raised but he did not reprimand her; he only smiled at her.

"I’m here to see... Guild Leader Kamille Han."

The woman finally snapped out of it, and lowered her gaze, ashamed of her behavior earlier. However, she soon returned to being professional.

"Do you have any appointments?" Her voice was low but still sounded timid.

Rise did not mind and then shook his head. "Unfortunately, I don’t. But, you can try asking, maybe I can meet the Guild Leader without appointments."

He had never asked for appointments before, as he forgot. However, he had the feeling Kamille was also waiting for him, and he actually did not need one.

The woman suddenly did not know what to say. Usually, he could just turn down the other party. Not anyone could meet the Guild Leader! But the person in front of her this time was not just anyone.

It was Rise, the known scandalous Esper.

"Please wait a moment, I’ll ask." Since she could not turn him down nor had the courage to do so, she might as well ask.

The woman was about to call someone in the secretary’s office, when someone arrived.

"Mr. Rise?"

It was Hayes.

Seeing him, Rise’s eyes brightened. Hayes was not the same though but did not show it in his face.

"Perfect timing." Rise approached him, appearing so friendly. "I want to see the Guild Leader but unfortunately I don’t have an appointment. Can you just give a word for me?"

He was smiling, but for Hayes who knew his real personality and also witnessed his prowess, did not see this as friendly in the slightest.

"You want to see the Guild Leader?" Hayes looked at the receptionist, who was obviously scared of Rise’s presence, before returning to the smiling Rise.

Hayes subtly wiped the sweat from his forehead. He thought of something. Maybe? Honestly, he knew it would really be the case.

"Uh... The Guild Leader already knows you might visit. You can come into his office. Come, I’ll lead you." Hayes still knows how to read the room, and despite also being nervous at Rise’s presence, he volunteered to lead him to Kamille’s office.

If his guess was right then... Rise might really become part of the guild and his colleagues.

"Sounds good!" Rise’s grin widened and agreed in an instant. He did not forget to say thank you to the receptionist before leaving at Hayes’ lead.

Rise was a troublemaker, but that did not mean he was always disrespectful.

Hayes and Rise did not talk, silence only ensued as they rode the elevator. Neither of the two takes the initiative to raise any topic. Rise would not certainly start a conversation unless it was Kamille.

Reaching the floor where Kamille’s office was, Rise did not even need for Hayes to lead him. From the start, he did not need anyone to lead him. He was very familiar with this place, after all. However, to not look suspicious further, he could only accept Hayes’ help.

"From here, it’s only the Guild Leader’s office." Hayes finally spoke.

Rise nodded, not saying anything. He only wanted to go on and proceed, and Hayes’ presence was just annoying him at this point. Before they parted, though, Hayes paused and spoke again.

"Rise... Uh, Mr. Rise," Hayes called.

"What?" The impatience slowly showed in his face.

Could he hurry up?

Hayes swallowed as he sensed this. "You... Are you here to join the guild?" Remembering of what Rise said that time, it seemed it really came true. He was only a temporary member for that time.

Rise’s irritation somehow lessened. Of course, answering him normally was out of the question either.

"Guess?" Rise laughed harder as he saw Hayes’ expression change but paid it no mind as he proceeded. Their feelings or opinions, were not of Rise’s concern.

There was only one.

Looking at the familiar door, Rise stopped and exhaled. He then knocked on the door before slowly opening it, his head peered inside.

"Guild Leader... I’m here."

After a few months of not saying this, Rise thought he was finally home again.

***

Sitting across from each other, Rise smiled at Kamille’s gaze.

"Everything is settled, Guild Leader. I can officially join the guild now." Rise spoke casually, but the excitement was not hidden.

"I saw." Kamille nodded, looking a few times more at Rise. For him, Rise was always like a never-ending enigma. Just as he thought he could grasp his intentions, Rise would always offer something new.

This made someone like Kamille, who always used to know everything with just a glance, very intrigued indeed. However, the feeling was not bad. Kamille even anticipated more.

New and unpredictable things were always interesting.
