Chapter 27: Expelled

Being a personal guide for Kamille has always been his duty in the past. However, asking the current Kamille, Rise could not fully say he was confident to be accepted.

In fact, he was already surprised that Kamille seemed to be tolerating him more than he expected. Although, he was always like that before, that he almost forgot they were at a different point in history where Kamille was unfamiliar to him.

Sure, Kamille did tolerate him in the past, but that was when they already encountered and went through life and death together. Currently, they have only known each other for about a day.

Rise assumed, perhaps, that this was just how Kamille really was? Yet, thinking about it, Rise himself thought it was unusual.

Kamille did not respond immediately. His eyes only became fixed on Rise, as though assessing what or who he really was. There were faint suspicions in them, but not to the point of distrust.

"You have a purpose," Kamille spoke, not asking but making a firm statement as if grasping Rise’s intention. "You want to join my guild not simply because you’re my fan."

Rise did not interrupt him. He knew that Kamille would not overlook something like this, and he had no intention to hide either. He would just let Kamille continue to explore his intention until he gradually suspected something and learned the whole truth.

Right, from the start, Rise did not intend to truly hide his purpose from Kamille. However, he would not actively tell him everything either. It was better for him to learn the truth himself, lest something irreversible might happen if it came from Rise.

"But your admiration is not fake, either. I can see the sincerity in your eyes. From the way you look at me, or the way you act around me."

From being probed of his intentions, Rise did not even flinch. However, now that Kamille seemed to be exposing him even the way he looked at the other, despite his thick skin, Rise’s cheeks flushed slightly, embarrassed.

Kamille narrowed his eyes. "Just like that. Even if you’re a good actor, your real emotions will still be transparent in front of me. It’s not fake.

"This makes me wonder... What truly is your goal?"

Kamille could grasp the surface at most. Rise really did look like someone who admires him. As he said, all the fake emotions would be exposed in front of his eyes, discerning their real feelings from fake.

He asked very calmly, not an ounce of strong suspicion.

Rise paused for a moment, seemingly thinking. But deep inside of him, he was slightly stunned. Not because of the question itself; he was expecting that.

It was because of what Kamille said! He didn’t seem to be bluffing either. Could he really discern real emotions? But how come...

Wait, Rise shook his head inside and did not dwell on it too much for now. He had time to ponder over it later. What was important was Kamille, who was in front of him.

"Intentions? Of course, I have something in my mind." Rise did not break away the eye contact, making sure Kamille could see his eyes or the change of his expressions. "But don’t worry, Guild Leader... I won’t harm you or the guild. I swear."

Rise talked ambiguously and proceeded with a promise. That was not halfhearted, if he could, he would expose everything. However, he had this ominous feeling that if he did, something really would happen, something he mostly did not want to see.

"I also want to join the guild because I really admire you, Guild Leader." Rise only ended with that. Saying more only complicates things more. Moreover, Kamille did not need too many excuses either. He only wanted the truth, even just the surface.

Kamille’s gray pupils seemed to grow dark, and examined him for a moment before it lightened.

"Being my personal guide... is not impossible." Kamille must admit, the sensations and intoxications that Rise’s guiding brought him were unforgettable, almost addicting.

He never felt that way, and deep inside him, he was reluctant to just let him go. There was a reason the government never wanted to completely release the Guides and let the Guilds recruit their own.

Espers were naturally drawn to Guides, especially with Guides they have the highest compatibility or affinity with. They seemed to be two sides of the same coin, but in terms of dependency, Espers held the lower position.

Guides could live without guiding Espers, but Espers, if they constantly used their abilities, would never survive without a Guide.

And it seemed, Kamille was no exception.

After so long, and encountering a Guide compatible with him, Kamille would be dumb if he let go of Rise now.

Just as Rise’s eyes lit up at these words, Kamille continued.

"Likewise, joining the guild is not difficult." Rise was recorded as an Esper and not a Guide. "However, will the Union let you go?"

Yes, the main problem was the Union. Rise was affiliated with the Union which was a government organization, almost part of the military, with hazy lines as the boundary.

Rise was a troublemaker and someone with a lot of submitted complaints against, yet the Union had never let him go. There was no reason besides that he was strong.

His capability was beyond strong and helpful in most cases, proven by how he assisted Kamille in fending off the wolves more than his own members ever could.

So the question was... Would the Union let him go?

At this, a knowing smile quickly spread across Rise’s lips. He was more than capable of knowing the answer to this.

Kamille saw his smile and wondered if Rise had a plan.

Rise did not tell him outright, though only leaving a sentence.

"As long as you welcome me, Guild Leader."

His voice and tone sounded mischievous but equally thrilled.

Rise always had his ways.

After having his guarantee, Rise left the red zone and returned to the headquarters.

Then, a huge uproar was created overnight. The news of Rise Lee being expelled also spread the next day. No one knew the reason.

However, the huge hole in the ceiling of the Director’s office, which could also be seen outside, left no room for explanation.
