Chapter 156: Apocalypse

He grimaced at the memory, not even wanting to recall what happened inside with only Epsilon and Kamille together. No, he just skipped those!

Rise could never find himself reading even just a sentence about their romance. Nope.

He sucked a deep breath, snapping from all these thoughts, and gathered himself together.

"Guild Leader," Rise pulled away slightly, his eyes lingering.

But... How could he not be afraid? Rise just could not be certain of his progress; deep inside of him, he knew that Kamille’s fated one was not him.

With the appearance of Epsilon... Would things go back to what they used to be?

"What are you thinking?" Kamille like a broken record, repeated once more. The words were the same, but the tone was greatly different, intensifying every time he uttered the question.

Kamille touched Rise’s chin, wanting to get a closer look at his face and his expression.

"I wouldn’t know if you won’t tell me."

The words that once came out of Rise’s lips were returned to him.

Rise stared at Kamille straight in the eye, not concealing his emotions. The doubt, the fear... the uncertainty, all of it. Rise was never a transparent person, but for Kamille, he could...

He could not say the words because it would greatly disrupt the world; the consequences that might follow were far more destructive than what they experienced in the other world.

He did not need to say it through his lips; his eyes alone could convey these emotions.

"Let’s go," Rise gripped the hem of Kamille’s clothes tightly. "This time, with me... I won’t stay put."

He remembered, no... Rise already realized some of Kamille’s intentions in the past. Was it because of the plot, and how reasonable was it? Yeah, the blame was perhaps due to how perfect that scene was.

Kamille did not let him come, mainly because he was injured—heavy injured at that. Rise, who was still having a fever at that time, naturally had to rest. Also the reason they had to rest in that city after the gate raid instead of returning straight to their headquarters.

Truly such a lovely scene to make the protagonist and his male lead come together, alone, without Rise.

"That gate... Let’s conquer it. Together." Rise did not know if that was the gate in his memory, but he wanted to attempt to change what was his regret in his memories.

More than the plot itself.

Rise did not break off their eye contact; he wanted to let him know that he wanted to do this. He was desperate to do this.

Kamille pinched his chin and nodded.

"We’ll go together."

Rise visibly relaxed on his hold, Kamille wrapping his arm around him, soothing him.

The two, without discussing further, immediately took action. Rise clung to Kamille as the other jumped through the window, the glass shattering with the impact.

Shoot, Hayes would be busy for a while.

They did not care at that point, and using the elevator was such an inconvenience.

Rise glanced at his Guild Leader, who also sensed his gaze and turned to him. The two locked gazes for a while before a smile graced his lips, clinging ever so tightly.

They descended quickly, barely noticeable as Kamile expertly controlled the wind around them.

Composing himself, Rise looked around him. The once lively scene had become even more lively with the crowd now escaping for their lives. The Espers had already taken action, but the suction of the gate swallowed the people so fast that they could not even react.

Instantly, the rally about Rise had now become a nightmare.

Rise’s expression subtly showed a surprise.

Dang, he had already convinced himself that this scene was similar to that one memory of his, but suddenly, it was true all along.

The gate that swallowed the people was a unique gate that was never seen before in history. Rise set aside the questions of why suddenly it appeared for later.

The two landed on the ground; the wind swept around as a large number of people were caught in it, struggling, but no one could escape until they were thrown to the side like some trash.

Kamille did the same again, not bothering to check their condition. The espers looked shocked but could only gulp before they attended to the people without any questions.

Rise looked up as Kamille talked to Hayes, who was nearby, giving instructions. Even without knowing the future like Rise was, Kamille could assume at least that the unusual gate was not simple, and so they might stay inside a little longer.

It was really the same gate.

Rise noticed the appearance of this gate, which was exactly similar to the gate in his memory. There was a subtle difference in the gate over other gates...

Like a mouth.

The gate even had sharp edges as though it had teeth. Maybe it was really the mouth of some monster.

"Vice Leader," Rise turned to their side, sensing their conversation was about to conclude. The scene was chaotic already, so no one was paying attention to their presence anymore; if anything, the crowd was now relieved.

Hayes looked at him, waiting.

"Please take care of Riri while we’re not around." His tone was warm and sincere. Hayes looked startled by the tone, but Rise only smiled.

"When we get back, you can request anything." Rise then winked, "Think carefully."

Hayes blinked repeatedly, processing them, but all he could do was nod, seeing of the two with his eyes. Even Kamille’s last instructions were faint.

Anything... Ah, no, but more than that. What, did Rise just say, please?

"You startled him." Kamille cleared the path as he swept all the running crowd towards the side, basically dumping them there, although it did save them from the suction of the gate.

He did not do that just to save them, seeing them as a nuisance.

Rise giggled, leisurely walking with arms behind his back. He just felt so good as he did not need to use his forcefield to clean the path; Kamille was already doing that for him.

"He’ll get over it." He shrugged, but he was smiling.

Hayes was also cute, although he missed the one who always bickerd with him despite being obviously scared.

"You seem fond of him?"

Rise narrowed his eyes playfully, looking up.

"I am," he admitted, then he paused; they were already just a slight distance from the gate, making the mana fluctuations intense. Rise turned his head and then grinned, "I’m fond of everyone in the party."

Basically, his fondness for them greatly differs from how he feels for him. He wanted to convey that meaning, which was quite a success.

He witnessed just how Kamille failed to suppress a small smile and just let it be; his gaze softened and he offered his hand. His expression was light, dazzling even.

At the chaotic background, a dangerous gate just before them... the two still managed to create such a scene.

"Let’s go?"

Rise did not make Kamille wait, as he quickly accepted the hand, squeezing it. The two then both took the initiative, as their fingers naturally interlocked.

Sharing another glance, the two simultaneously look at the gate. Grasping each other’s hands, the two let the gate swallow them inside until everything went black.

Rise, for the first time in his Esper career... fainted as he entered a gate. There was truly something else about this gate!

The last thing he remembered before he went unconscious was Kamille engulfing him in an embrace, him doing the same.

"Rise... Rise..." Someone was calling him. Rise frowned at the voice, seemingly distant but also near his ears.

It repeated, but as he looked around, he could not see anyone. He sat up, then frowned heavier.

Wait, where was this? He looked up and saw a familiar ceiling. It was his room in the Guild headquarters. Rise chewed his lips, pondering.

What was he doing before this? He tried hard to remember...

When Rise happened to look down at his bed, he flinched. His eyes were growing wide.

What... His body doing there? Then, as if a switch, the scene completely cleared, and the whole room now displayed in front of him. The voice also became clear.

"Rise..."

Rise instinctively covered his mouth in shock, his eyes shaking.

How...

Rise was in the bed, unconscious... no... He was not breathing. And... at the someone he least expects to see.

Kamille...

His Guild Leader, holding his hand, called his name. Eyes bloodshot, no, truly crimson, cracks around his neck, veins protruding as mana flickered around him, continuously giving mana to the Rise on the bed.

Yet... Rise would not stir. Just like a broken glass, mana just went through before being wasted. But as if insane, Kamille did not stop. He continued.

Rise stared, watching in disbelief, eyes heating up.

Kamille’s eyes did not have the white anymore; it was only crimson. Veins crack through his skin. His body was like shattered glass, ready to explode.

Stop... Rise wanted to shout. No, I’m dead. You’re only wasting your vitality, Guild Leader!

Yet, Kamille could not hear him, busy giving his vitality to the already dead Rise. Just as he was about to touch Kamille, the scene suddenly widened. No, in fact, Rise felt he was ejected as he became only a spectator in the truest sense.

Suddenly, Rise looked around again. His mouth parting... shocked by the scene he saw.

Fire... Black fires were everywhere, continuously burning. As he looked up, the sky was split. A massive whirlpool was at the center; massive gaps could be seen as if anytime they would widen until they tore up the whole dimension.

The end of the world...

That was the only impression he had.

At the ground... piles upon piles of corpses were scattered. Not only by humans but also by monsters, humanoid or not. Rise’s attention was then captured by a figure.

Epsilon.

Rise fell into silence, staring at him.

Shock and disbelief were evident across his face. Still breathing, but no different from a corpse. His body connected to the massive whirlpool extending to that enormous hole in the sky, impaling him to the ground.

No doubt... Kamille did this to him.
