Chapter 125: Trickster Got Tricked
Phew. Rise sighed with relief. That was so close.
He witnessed how the boulder behind him was split in half. Kamille must be truly angry to finally muster his strength despite the repercussions it might caused. That boulder could have been him.
"So scary, wow, is it really right to save him?" Rise suddenly pondered about his choice. Now, he had a powerful enemy, capable of hunting him everywhere!
Should he consider taking a different identity from now on?
Rise sighed and sped up. There was no use regreeting as Kamille was already saved, so... He could only be careful in the future. Having such a powerful enemy... His life would be a next stage thrilling experience.
Still, the elixir... Rise rubbed his chest. Wow, that pained him! He only got that one elixir. Elixirs were rare for some reason, most loots from gates were items without any elixirs.
And the elixirs that had a great effect were even rarer. Rise only teased Kamille; the elixir was real, capable of even making the almost dead to be revived. At least, that was it said when he appraised the item.
He provoked Kamille so that the other would not be able to think of spitting out or vomiting it out; otherwise, it would go to waste! The elixir was real, and it would truly melt, but that did not mean it would instantly be absorbed. It needed a few seconds, so Rise lied to make Kamille distracted.
Some might think Rise was so stupid to give such an item to someone he did not even know for long and was a potential enemy, and it was true. He was stupid.
However, when did Rise bother with that? Like he said, he already promised Kamille that he would help him, and he only fulfilled that. He would do what he wanted; the elixir pained him, but that was it. Rise moved on with that instantly.
"Now... let’s hunt!"
Rise raided some gates alone, then went back to the central city to be guided, although he thought he did not need it yet, but that was standard procedure after two weeks of exploring.
He did not know yet that he was a guide and did not need guiding then, so he also complied with that rule.
"Someone called you."
"Who?" Rise asked and watched the timid Esper explain.
"Uh, the higher-ups—I mean, the higher-ups of Three Nations have a mission for you."
At the word mission, his eyes lit up immediately. Rise never cared about politics or anything, so he did not have a prejudice against the Three Nations’ higher-ups; he only loved the word mission!
"Cleaning up the monsters." That was a common mission, and Rise was not suspicious at all. Together with some powerful natives, he left the central city to go to the location of the mission.
At first, everything was going smoothly. His ability was such an efficient method to clean up monster waves; everywhere they go, the monsters are flattened to the ground, unable to howl as their last breath.
"Is this done?" Rise, asked the representative beside him. His tone is neutral at most. He was not too tired, but running around for a few days without rest could still tire him out.
The representative nodded his head without hesitation. "It seems so."
Rise looked around and saw that most monsters around the vicinity were already dead. He was reluctant to leave, but he also wanted rest; he could play around again a few days later.
"Before that, we will have a small bonfire party." The representative mentioned subtly, "Do you want to come? But you don’t have to." It was known that Rise was not easy to socialize with.
They could bet that none of the names in the group Rise could recall, which was the truth. For him, this was also a temporary party, just like everyone else.
As he was about to answer, his nose picked up a delicious scent. He immediately looked where the group was and saw that they were indeed preparing for a bonfire party, already barbecuing some monster meat.
Rise gulped; every time there was food, he could not resist it. Since he was distracted by food, he failed to notice the sharp gaze coming from the representative, who was careful and rather timid before.
"Do you want to come?"The representative inquired once more; this time it had a bewitching vibe on it, and coupled with the smell of food, Rise nodded his head.
"If you insist, then I’ll go."
The representative smiled as though excited. He nodded and led Rise to the ’party’. Rise’s love for food was known to all, but no one thought it was truly a weakness, just that they could try to make it one.
The gamble had paid off.
"Do you know? Some bizarre corpses have been seen around here lately."
"Where?"
"I think it’s near us... they say... They were eaten by a huge beast."
"What? How many had been killed?"
The woman signed before muttering in terror. "Almost a hundred."
"What?" This time the group exclaimed almost at the same time.
The group was discussing while eating, circling around the bonfire.
"Isn’t it real? Why haven’t I heard of it?" One was skeptical but also afraid.
"It’s true! My cousin is part of the bureau; they are investigating it."
Rise could hear this of course and became interested. And the end of the discussion was obvious: Rise with the group decided to hunt the monster, considering they were already there.
Before, Rise was a battle maniac, and that he was also self-centered. He did not even fear Kamille; why would he fear some unknown beast? He felt thrilled just by thinking about it, in fact.
He failed to consider a lot of things, and that was a hard-earned lesson for him.
"Is this the place?" Rise turned around and suddenly stopped in his tracks, his gaze narrowing in an instant.
The group that was only trailing behind him, which was also what he had used to from the past few days of fighting with them, suddenly disappeared.
Rise looked around; the place also changed... gone were the dark ruins with the boring illumination of moonlight. What was in his view was...
crimson ruins piled with corpses.
His pupils instantly shrank as the belated anger filled him.
"Fuck. I’ve been tricked?"
