Chapter 105: First Glimpse (1)
In a span of a few seconds, Kamille had thought of ways to lighten up Rise’s mood again. He was not familiar with comforting people, but for Rise, he could try.
However, it seemed he did not need to do that.
Only after a few minutes of silence did Rise quickly become better. In the first place, he was not one to wallow in his own despair for longer than a few minutes.
He was not as fragile, and not only could he show his vulnerability to Kamille, but at the same time, he preferred for Kamille to just see the bright and interesting side of him.
"Guild Leader, look!" Rise pointed at one of the food stalls. "Let’s go try some!" With a grin on his lips, he did not even wait for Kamille to answer, as he was already dragging the other.
Without hearing any complaints from Kamille, Rise just became bolder and clung closely again to him. He could sense the observing gaze, and so, he gave an assuring smile.
He was actually better. Even more than before.
"You just ate? I thought you were full."
Rise’s grin only widened, or more precisely, it became genuine after hearing this. He was grateful for this and naturally grew enthusiastic.
He chuckled and answered honestly, but with a slight hint of joking.
"That’s a few minutes ago."
Kamille seemed stunned for a bit but could only helplessly be dragged from stall to stall by Rise.
They did not try everything, only those Kamille specifically chose which Rise would potentially find as delicious. It was as if Rise’s words were more impactful to Kamille, even more than he imagined.
When Rise spoke of eating foods even when they were tasteless or disgusting as long as they were served to him, he made Kamille choose meticulously through the stalls, even using his True Sight with it.
The city was not big to begin with, and it was not like there were any interactions inside, so the two decided to return to the villa, thus ending their little date.
Surprisingly, Rise was even the one who suggested to return. There was no reason for it; besides, he had a hunch that Zenos had already returned. And they also could not gather any more information outside as well.
He was not afraid if they were caught sneaking out, but the business with Zenos was more important, not to mention, interesting.
Sure enough, as soon as they arrived in front of the villa, Zenos was already waiting for them.
"Heya, finished talking with your elders?" Rise spoke as soon as they got closer to Zenos. His voice was casual without any hint of guilt.
Zenos helplessly looked at them, but since they were actually guests and one that had an allegiance contract with it, even if just temporary, he could not limit their movements.
Glancing at Kamille, Zenos chose to ignore what they did and replied.
"Yes, I already talked with them, and they are willing to negotiate with you."
Zenos’ words had the biggest weight in the clan, but he could not just ignore the elders as well, and so he was relieved that both sides had reached an agreement in this matter.
About the state of their world, everyone was aware of it. However, the elders were more sensitive with it.
"They agreed so quickly?" This time, it was Kamille who asked, slightly skeptical.
They were outsiders, and they did not know them much, and to meet and negotiate with them so quickly?
As if already expecting this, Zenos told the most important reason.
"In the capital, the tension is rising there now."
The clans had labeled where the Three Nations were located as the capital, showing just how much they valued the unification of their world. Even if they gradually lost sight of this matter happening, deep in their hearts, they were still looking forward to it.
Unusurprised, the two only exchanged glances as Rise suggested they talk inside.
Sitting at the sofa in the living room of the villa were two parties: Kamille’s party, and the other was Zenos and the group of the so-called elders.
Rise had thought they would be summoned to the headquarters or main mansion of the clan, but only a few minutes since they returned, the elders also arrived.
Like one said, this was them showing their sincerity. Kamille had no idea how these elders were optimistic about this deal, and they even had this sense of urgency for some reason.
Nonetheless, he was satisfied with this sincerity; his impression of them had increased significantly.
The two forgo most formalities and did not even arrange the seats to appear like a formal meeting. It was a bit messy, but at the same time it gave a sense of familiarity and comfortability.
"Let me introduce myself. I’m Zarilan Lionheart, the former clan leader of the Lionheart Clan." As the man introduced himself, Rise could sense that the four cubs with them flinched slightly, pressured by the aura exuded from the man. Even though he made an effort to suppress most of it, some of it still leaked and could not be concealed.
In Rise’s eyes, while the man was old, he was still robust for his age and, of course, powerful. Rise could even confidently say he could still fight.
Silent at the side, Rise only watched, but his mind only flashed with thoughts.
Woah, the Zarilan Lionheart is here, huh? Rise was familiar with him. He was not a significant character of the novel, but he was a legendary figure of this world, and so he naturally knew of his name as well.
As respect, Kamille also introduced himself formally. Before he also explained some of his intentions, not too different from what he said to Zenos.
Since he was the one who actually wanted something, Kamille felt like revealing his intentions first was also showing his sincerity.
"We’re from the outside world. This world is connected to our world through a gate, we needed to investigate what is inside." Kamille did not elaborate further; Zenos had probably already briefed them about what he came for.
"We’re battling the same enemies; the threat of both sides was the same." Kamille’s gaze was calm but firm. "We can exchange information; everything that’s about gates or nobles, we’re highly interested in that."
Zarilan, who seemed to become the main spokesperson of this meeting, nodded slightly. His son, Zenos, only watched and listened at the side, fully entrusting the negotiation to his father.
The other elders also nodded in understanding. Like the current clan leader, they also did not interrupt the two leaders of both sides. The same was true for Kamille’s party.
"About outsiders," Zarilan paused and met Kamille’s eyes directly. "The capital is getting chaotic because of you outsiders." His words might be sharp, but his tone was otherwise and remaining calm.
"In our perspective, this is the gate that we can explore, and the humans on our side will naturally flock inside. I can’t guarantee with others, but most of us wanted more to gather information than to fight you."
Kamille then slowed down as if to make himself clear and emphasized his words. "I’m sure that’s the same with you. Just like I can’t control the action of the humans on my side, you can’t control the actions of the Three Nations as well."
His words carried familiarity as though he already knew so much, even though he only knew a few things about this world from Zenos. However, Zarilan appeared unsurprised by this, and instead he just nodded calmly at Kamille’s words.
Zarilan also sighed after a few seconds.
"The Three Nations won’t negotiate with you peacefully. And someone from there might use this to create chaos."
Zarilan and the others were not fools; they had long known that the beings beyond the gate had already infiltrated on the higher ups of the Three Nations; the number of traitors was actually concerning.
"We anticipated that as well."
Rise leaned back lazily, watching the two talk. In fact, this could not even be considered a negotiation since the two appeared to already be on the same side.
It was strange.
Rise swept his gaze to the elders and then to Zarilan.
They were... too calm. As though... They also anticipated their arrival.
Wait... Rise squinted his eyes slightly and felt his eyelids twitching.
Did he hit something right? However... That was a bit far-fetched, wasn’t it? When he lifted his gaze again, Rise paused, finally startled this time.
It was because... Zarilan just locked gaze with him. No, in fact, since the start... He seemed to always glance at Rise.
When Zarilan and the others entered the villa, Rise also greeted and met them; they stared at him. However, he did not find something was wrong. After all, he also swept his eyes around them one by one. He even stared at Zarilan for a few more seconds.
He did not meet Zarilan before since, unfortunately, he was already dead a year later when Rise entered this world and only heard legends about him. So, he was a bit curious about what he looked like.
The same was true for Zarilan, who also looked at him. Rise did not think it was strange, then just found that it was natural in that situation.
However, now... He was sensing that they were... staring at him more and more. It was as though, the urgency that Rise felt when he saw them earlier was not just his imagination, but it was real.
It was not even only Zarilan but the elders as well. Rise only noticed that the elders only peered at him, unable or somehow afraid to look at him in the eye.
Zarilan was the only one who truly made eye contact with him.
Rise could not help but frown. What was it?
Was he just overthinking things? No, that could not possibly be it. Rise had a higher perception than average, he could tell.
They were looking at him. More precisely... They seemed to know him!
