Chapter 104: Food

This reaction greatly shows the difference between ordinary people, and in this case, Espers, and similar powerful individuals.

The woman finally lifted her head as he heard Rise, and the hint of excitement within the silver-haired man.

Suddenly, her demeanor seemed to change and became distant. She scratched her cheek awkwardly and forced out an answer.

"Uh, yeah. The gate can trigger the surrounding monsters because of its chaotic energy." The woman spoke, but she sounded unconfident, or more accurately, to say it was a textbook answer.

Rise put the dishes in front of them, he also did not expect too much from a civilian. He scooped some of the soup and immediately tried to taste it.

In an instant, his eyes lit up slightly and he looked up at the cook. His lips naturally hooked into a smile and he gave a thumbs up. When it came to food, especially to dishes that he actually found delicious, Rise was not stingy to praise.

"It’s good!" He also voiced out and gave another thumbs up as he lowered his head again to taste the other dishes. When he did, his eyes turned even brighter.

All of these delicacies were just right for his tastebuds.

The woman who grew cold earlier because of Rise’s reaction could not help but smile. No one reused such compliments, and based on Rise’s expression, it also looked genuine.

She quickly warmed up again and began telling them more information about the gate as well.

As for Kamille, he was not eating too much, and most of the time, he was only watching Rise eat with a soft and fond expression. He already noticed then that Rise loved eating, and so he especially made sure to find a restaurant that the other would enjoy.

Looking at Rise, a small smile also began to appear on his lips.

It’s worth it.

Saying something like, ’I can’t be full just by watching you eat’, seemed not an exaggeration. Kamille had been slowly, not only further recognizing himself but he also began to enjoy these little things.

Eating, roaming around, or talking. They were leisure times that sometimes Kamille could not really afford, and in just a few months after Rise appeared, his life had dramatically shifted.

And in a way, Kamille was also enjoying this change and, even more so, anticipating the future, which he never did before.

Licking his lips, Rise paused and happened to meet Kamille’s gaze as he subconsciously lifted his gaze.

"Want more?"

Kamille looked at his plate and slowly nodded his head.

"Then give me more."

Rise chuckled and joked, "Here, my baby."

Kamille’s brow rose, but he only shrugged with a helpless smile.

From the start that Rise began and focused on eating, the woman opposite them had also subconsciously stopped talking. Her gaze fell on the two as she observed these customers.

The way the two interacted seemed so natural and showed great familiarity. She guessed that the two seemed to know each other for years for them to act this way.

For some reason, the woman felt like... She was intruding on their privacy. When, in actual fact, the two were only eating, and in a diner, how many people did she see eating?

Her gaze then could not help but look at the man beside the silver-haired man. Since the start, he had not said much, but no one could neglect his presence.

He appeared cold and intimidating, the type that one just instinctively wanted to avoid. And yet... His eyes never left the silver-haired man’s face.

Attentively watching him, occasionally his gaze would flash as his features softened significantly.

The woman finally lowered her gaze and stopped watching them. She made sure to minimize her presence as much as possible.

The two did not think of the woman at all and only continued eating.

Afterward, since both did not have a currency of this world, they instead used gold instead. This still had some value for ordinary citizens.

Kamille was the one who paid for them, and Rise did not even fight for the bill.

The two moons above the skies still silently illuminated the city. Standing just in front of the fountain, the two paused and sat at the bench before it.

This might be what they called a plaza, and there were still stalls around not only for items but also for food. It was quite lively, although one might consider it still the deep night if it was compared to Earth’s time.

"I’m so full." Rise rubbed his stomach, feeling satisfied. He turned to Kamille, who was sitting beside him. "What about you, Guild Leader?"

"It’s fine." Kamille’s reaction was neutral at most.

This made Rise laugh. Well, it was because Kamille’s reaction was already expected, and so he laughed because of his predictability sometimes.

"That cook... She’s good." Rise thought of the woman as he smiled brightly. She not only gave them information but even let them taste such delicacies.

Rise truly appreciated the food she served them, and so, before they left, he gave the woman a token of appreciation. It was an item that would help them or even her family escape a life-and-death situation once.

Just by this description alone, one could discern that it was a precious and rare item. Even for top-rank hunters, this was a kind of item that would be sought after, and no one idiot unless in a desperation situation would even sell it.

For Rise to just give it like that as though it were just an ordinary item would surprise everyone, and consider whether this was Rise’s another whim or he was just downright crazy.

Moreover, Rise did not tell the woman the item’s real nature and just gave the gist of it. He seemed to just treat it as an ordinary gift to be given away.

Since it happened when he was around, Kamille also witnessed it. He was also surprised, but he did not dissuade Rise and only watched on the sidelines.

One was that it was Rise’s item, and most of all, it was Rise’s intention and reasons.

However, this did not mean Kamille was not curious.

Rise just gifted a rare and precious lifesaving item to others just because of the food the other served. Kamille did not understand. A realization dawned on him that he truly did not know Rise yet.

Rise was someone famous to the whole federation because of his terrible reputation for his wilful personality. He seemed the type who would not blink, even when the world around him got destroyed.

Kamille’s impression of him was not as exaggeration as the others, but he agreed that Rise was someone that not everyone could get along with, a person that one might find it difficult to truly connect with.

And suddenly, he gave such a precious item without battling an eyelid. This was such a contrast that greatly intrigues Kamille.

"Is... The food that good?" Kamille could not help but ask.

As soon as Kamille asked, Rise seemed to have anticipated it as he lightly laughed again. He leaned his back and stretched his legs, his gaze turned, and looked at the small fountain for a bit.

His gaze lingered at it for a few more seconds before he returned his gaze to his Guild Leader.

"Guild Leader, do you have any food you like? Or maybe a favorite dish?" Instead of directly answering, Rise returned another question. His expression showed his genuine curiosity but also something else.

Rise also never asked this before, so he did not know, but he also had a hunch of Kamille’s answer.

Kamille paused for a second, but he answered almost immediately.

"I don’t think I have a particular dish I really like." Kamille could eat almost anything, but that did not mean he liked eating or had a favorite food he could mention in a heartbeat.

Sure enough, Rise was not surprised. He leaned slighly towards Kamiille; their shoulders touched, but Rise did not truly lean his head on the other’s shoulders.

"For me, I also don’t have any food I can say is my favorite." Rise spoke in a soft tone, and somehow it appeared to be uncharastestic of him. It was devoid of anything—the playfutone or mockery.

It was just soft.

His lips then curled. "I just love food and eating. Anything that’s in front of me, as long as that’s food that’s served for me... I will not be able to control myself for eating."

Rise’s eyes glimmered and continued. "So, it doesn’t matter if the food is tasteless or disgusting. They are food, and edible, and I’ll eat them. I won’t waste any food."

Kamille suddenly sensed that the atmosphere seemed to be shifting in a different direction, making his heart sank slightly. And yet he did not interrupt Rise; he only softly reached out and touched Rise’s head before guiding him to his shoulder.

Rise also did not protest and leaned his head comfortably.

The two leaning shoulders to shoulders on the bench suddenly enveloped a tranquil yet heavy atmosphere.

"So, I love that cook’s food. It’s really good." Rise smiled genuinely. At times, Rise had a simple mind too. Even his standards were not as high as one might suspect it to be.

If he loved something, then he loved it. Perhaps, this was also the reason that even after all these years, Rise’s devotion to Kamille had not diminished and only grew stronger.

One hated his whims, but one might admit that Rise was a very loyal and grateful person. Just like he gifted the cook because he found the food delicious and was thankful for it, he could also save anyone, even at the cost of his life, the moment they engraved their presence in his life.

Kamille was like that, and even the party members too were the same. It was as if, he was such a tough nut to crack, but the moment one did... They would be rewarded greatly for their efforts.

Rise stared at the fountain as the water moved from it. His gaze was calm, but waves after waves were reflected on it.

"I hate being hungry..." Rise murmured.

It was not a good experience, and he did not want to go through the same thing again.
