Chapter 103: City

Not waiting for Kamille to answer, Rise smiled sheepishly and continued in a playful tone.

"Zenos never told us to stay put, isn’t it?" With that, he winked, emphasizing the mischievous loophole.

In the first place, they were guests and not prisoners that were not allowed to go out.

Kamille instinctively raised his brows, and without any hesitation, he agreed.

Fortunately, their attire was not too out of place, which was enough to earn everyone’s attention. Some might glance at them with curiosity, but perhaps due to the natural deterrence their presence exuded, they immediately went and returned to what they were doing.

While the city seemed part of a fantastical era of a game, most of the clothes that the natives wore were not too different from the modern society except for some designs.

"What is this?" Rise pointed at one item on the table. As they wandered around, they found themselves in the part of a city where some people set up their stalls selling a variety of items.

Some of them were from gates or even ordinary stuff.

Kamille also began to look around at the stall, although none of the items caught his eye.

The owner of the stall, who looked in his late twenties, immediately smiled and greeted the new potential customers with enthusiasm.

"That’s a glow emerald, dear customer." Just as he was about to boast about it, the customer cut him off.

"What’s its use then?" Rise was not really curious, but he found it pretty. Most of his collections were based on that, even if they were totally useless.

The man paused and replied with a subdued tone. "It can glow in the dark." Feeling that it was too ordinary to sell, he even added. "It’s also pretty." He sighed inwardly; that was not also a good selling point.

The man in front of him might not look like it, but in his aura alone, he must be strong.

Unexpectedly, the customer only grinned. "Right, it’s pretty."

Rise looked at the gem in his hand and looked at it more.

"Can you change an item instead of money?" Since he didn’t have any currency here, he had to resort to this.

At his side, Kamille had already gone off the other stalls, looking around.

Flustered, the man nodded without thinking.

"Great!" Rise smiled and thought for a moment before he took out an item from his pocket. It actually came from the space artifact, but as it would probably shock others if he revealed it, he made it as though he was only pulling it from his pocket.

The man stared at the item that Rise took out, under the moonlight, it shone majestically. He could not even leave his gaze off it, as though mesmerized.

"I’ll exchange it for this. It’s called a lightstone."

Rise smiled and put the Lightstone on the table. With that, he managed to acquire another beautiful gem. Exchanging an item with more value than a useless item, perhaps, only Rise would take that loss.

In his defense, he had a lot of those lightstones while he did not have this gem yet, so... This was not totally a loss.

After he got what he wanted, he did not pay attention to the owner anymore, and he quickly walked over to where Kamille was.

"Done?" Kamille asked as he felt Rise arrive at his side.

Rise nodded with a satisfied smile, showing the glow of emerald at Kamille.

Kamille glanced at it and then at Rise; in the end, he did not say anything. It was better things to be left unsaid.

As long as he’s happy. Kamille thought.

It was not like Rise was also expecting any praise or anything like that.

"How about you? Anything catches your eye?" Rise asked, hinted with curiosity.

His words might be like a popular phrase, but he was actually referring to his True Sight. Since he already had this cheating ability, it was quite a waste not to use it to one’s own advantage.

And Kamille was not someone to be wasteful like that. While scrutinizing the items, his ability was also active. Maybe, something might be a good item or a beneficial item for them.

Eventually, Kamille shook his head, indicating that there was nothing. He was also not too disappointed. This kind of good thing was hard to come by, especially in the ordinary stalls by the roadside.

"Well, let’s eat first. What do you think?" Rise fiddled at the newly acquired gem and raised another good activity. When visiting another city for the first time, trying their delicacy was also a must!

Rise truly treated this exploration as sight-seeing. Kamille was not one to ruin his mood either. So, the two looked for a good restaurant to try.

It also did not take long, as even with this, Kamille had abused his True Sight to find a restaurant that would suit Rise’s taste. Truly, if his ability had a mind, they might already be mocking Kamille.

Using such a high-level ability to find a good restaurant?

Kamille did not care though, and Rise being unaware, they entered the restaurant. No, rather it might be more accurate to call it a diner instead.

The inside had small tables with few tables, but despite it, it still felt cozy for some reason.

"Welcome!" Someone greeted them as soon as they entered; it was the cook, or perhaps also the owner at the same time, standing inside the counter.

"Hello!" Being the one more outgoing of the two, Rise naturally was the one who responded to the greeting.

Rise and Kamille decided to just sit by the counter as well, facing the cook.

When they finally settled, Rise casually asked, "We’re new... So can you recommend us a dish instead?"

The cook, a woman probably in her forties, observed them for a while before she nodded. She kindly smiled. "You must be from outside."

The two did not flinch with this. As the woman must be talking about the human cities or other clans, anyway, she would not know they were truly outsiders.

In this world, while the clans had distanced themselves from the Three Nations, it was not like they were so restrictive from outsiders. Some might have passed by from raiding gates or just wanting to visit, but they were still welcome to get inside.

"How did you know?" While smiling, Rise played along.

The woman finally laughed. "Of course, this is only a small city, and we have impressions of our residents."

"Most of all, I’ll never forget if I saw the faces of the two of you before." The woman was obviously complimenting their distinct appearance.

Even if he already heard this countless times, the woman’s words still managed to make him laugh. Maybe it was because it came from someone who did not recognize him.

It sounded more genuine.

After the small talk, the woman finally went into official business and recommended more of her specialty, which Rise also ordered two of each.

As the woman prepared the dishes, Rise continued talking with her.

"Are the gates in this area active recently?"

Of course, he would not intend for just any "small talk" He was not interested in knowing who the woman was or sharing anything about himself.

The woman paused slightly; he looked at Rise and then Kamille, and the realization quickly dawned on her. Perhaps as the questions were not really personal and the two would be able to acquire the information from others, she honestly answered Rise.

"I don’t know about the gates further from the city, but," The woman put the ready dishes before the two and continued. "The gate the clan is assigned to is acting up recently."

When the woman finished in her words, the worry was evident in her heavy sigh.

"Gate?" Kamille also pricked up his ears, taking the initiative to ask himself. He also decided to get information from this woman, being someone who was also a native of this world.

And with that, Rise stepped back slightly from the conversation.

This was not a confidential matter and, in fact, the most common knowledge.

"Yes, the unmeasurable gate that the Lionheart clan was entrusted to." The woman did not stop cooking, and while she talked, she did not lift her head, and so she did not see how Rise and Kamille briefly exchanged a glance.

Who knew, they also met another free source somewhere.

As though carried away by the atmosphere and also the tension from this gate, the woman continued without waiting for any questions or replies from the two customers.

"You see, each clan is entrusted with these unmeasurable gates, right? And the foundation of every clan also came from there."

"Yes, so, the gate is suddenly acting up recently?" To keep the conversation going, Rise casually inquired again.

Unaware of being probed, the woman nodded again.

She let out another sigh again, then began putting the cooked dish to the plates. "That gate is becoming the headache of the elders and even the clean leader had already announced for everyone not to leave the city for the time being."

"That gate is dangerous, but since it’s constantly being cleared each week, it has never acted in years."

The woman continued rambling on, as though wanting to let off the tension she had been feeling.

"What we feared is that because of this, the nearby monsters will cause another monster wave."

This was her biggest worry more than the gate itself, since that was something that was known to all, but for ordinary people like them, it was far off from where they were.

The monster wave was different, however. Once those monsters rampaged and began coming in waves... They would be immediately impacted.

"Monster wave?"

Oddly enough, Rise seemed unfazed, but his eyes lit up at the word. There was nothing more exciting than a monster wave.
