Chapter 74: Hospital Cafeteria
Chapter 74: Hospital Cafeteria
"Eeeh?" Kade whined, looking like an abandoned puppy. "But it’s only 6 PM..."
He was about to chase after Felix, but the white-haired Alpha that was with him stopped him, giving him a look that said, ’Let me handle it’, before approaching the Omega himself.
"Hi, I didn’t get a chance to introduce myself yet. I’m Fenwick, but you can call me Fen!" he smiled brightly. "Look, don’t throw us out just yet, hmm? We’ve driven for twenty hours straight to get here as soon as possible, and then we had to wait for almost two hours because we missed the afternoon visiting time... So, let us stay a bit longer, hmm? We could go and grab something to eat in the cafeteria. Or..." He leaned closer to Felix, lowering his voice to a whisper, "We could ditch that dumb Alpha and hang out together, just the two of us. What do you say?"
Felix pressed his lips, hesitating for a moment. He looked at Fen’s smiling face, then turned back to glance at Kade, who immediately turned his frown back to a puppy face... And let out a sigh.
Maybe he did overact a bit. There was no need to throw Kade out so soon when he just came to visit. He was just angry, first at Kade declaring paternity all on his own, and then wanting to take Remi away on top of that! So, he had lost his cool.
"Fine, you can stay a bit longer... Both of you," he finally said. "Let’s go to the bistro together... As long as you leave my fox alone, of course."
"Alright," Kade agreed without hesitation. Although he still wasn’t happy about the fox’s presence (and the fact that he could get under his cute little mate’s shirt!), the main reason was that he was suspicious of Remi’s identity, and was worried he might get between them. However, since at the current moment it was Kade’s desire to separate Felix and his fox that caused friction between them, he had no choice but to let it go.
The hospital cafeteria was pretty nice. Spacious and brightly lit, with comfortable chairs and sofas, the smell of freshly cooked food wafting in the air, very different from the odors of disinfectants and body fluids prevailing in the other parts of the hospital. Since it was dinner time, the buffet was filled with a selection of dishes anyone could scoop onto their plates, to then take it to the register to weigh it. It all looked pretty good, much better than Felix would have expected of hospital food...
Perhaps it wasn’t just any random hospital. Felix had already noticed it before, but the overall standard was pretty good. His room was nice, and single, with a private bathroom. He didn’t have to share a room with anyone, which seemed a bit... odd, but then again, Felix had no hospital experience. He never had to stay in a hospital before, and never even visited one, so he had nothing to compare it with. Aside from what he had seen in movies, which could hardly be considered a reliable source of knowledge. Besides, he was too absorbed in worrying about his daughter to really take time to think about it.
Now though, when he had a moment to himself (kind of. If he were to ignore the presence of two tall Alphas hovering around him and the fox still hidden under his shirt), the realization fully hit him. Kade’s guards must have taken him to a better hospital, with a higher standard.
...His face turned deathly pale at the thought of the hospital bills he would have to pay. How long would it take for him to pay it off? He was just a humble kitchen help, currently on unpaid leave!
"Is everything okay?" Kade asked, noticing the change of expression on Felix’s face, but the Omega only shook his head.
"Just a bit tired," he said. "I haven’t fully recovered yet."
He didn’t want to share his problems with Kade. Yes, the Alpha could - and undoubtedly would - help, but... Then he would owe Kade instead. And he was still reluctant to trust the Alpha. Who knew when he’d decide to collect the debt by dragging Felix to the Bloodmoon Pack with him?
Kade observed Felix intently for a moment longer, but eventually let it go, accepting his excuse. The Omega had just given birth earlier that day, so it was understandable he wouldn’t be back to his full strength just yet.
"Then you need to eat well," he just said, handing Felix a tray and a plate and grabbing one for himself.
"Mn." Felix nodded his head, and moved forward down the buffet, picking the dishes. He settled for some chicken breast gently sprinkled with herbs, a scoop of brown rice, steamed broccoli and some light cabbage salad... He didn’t want to go for anything too flavorful, even though that curry in one of the chafing dishes smelled so good... It might not be best for his body right now. After all, just because they were in a hospital cafeteria, it didn’t necessarily mean all the food was perfectly healthy.
"Just this?" Kade furrowed his brows, craning his neck to look at Felix’s plate. As if he didn’t have his own. "You need to eat more! Even if you have any pregnancy weight to lose," he glanced at the suspicious bulge on Felix’s stomach, which was most certainly not fat, at least for the most part, "now is not the time for you to diet."
And then, without even asking, reached out to scoop more food into Felix’s plate, pilling up pieces of chicken.
To which Felix lifted his brows. "I thought you would say I don’t need to lose any weight..."
"Well." Kade paused, once again glancing at the bulge. "I’d normally say that... But I think this," he poked Remi through Felix’s shirt, "is something you could afford to lose. Not that I won’t like you if you don’t, but..."
Felix only let out a sigh, and moved on, with his face filled to the brim. Well, perhaps he should just accept more food, now that he thought about it. After all, he had not only himself, but also his ’bulge’ to feed!
