Chapter 71: Meeting with the Spy
Chapter 71: Meeting with the Spy
The opportunity for Kade to meet up with the spy finally arrived two days later in the early afternoon. The Ironcoat Pack stirred some trouble at the border (at the Bloodmoon Pack’s secret request), requiring Jared’s immediate attention, thus, he had no choice but to depart together with his adviser, despite the presence of important guests in his pack.
At the same time, Fen promised to share some secret intel on Kade, as well as other eligible Alphas and Omegas from both the Bloodmoon, as well as some other influential packs, attracting attention of a lot of young wolves still looking for their mates, and even some of the mated ones, interested in gossip. They all gathered in the dining room for a ’small’ secret tea party...
And as if it wasn’t enough, someone ’accidentally’ left the gates of the chicken coop, the barn, and the pig pens all open, letting the animals free. Therefore, creating a lot of extra work for the pack members, who had to catch them and drag them all back.
With all of this going on, how could anyone have time to follow after Kade, when he went for a run in the forest in his wolf form to stretch his paws? Not that anyone could keep up in the first place, even if they tried. And while his absence was obviously noticed...
It wasn’t Kade who had to hide, but the spy. If he were caught doing something suspicious, he would lose his job, and most likely his life, and so would his family - he wasn’t the only spy, after all, he inherited this job from his father. But, as he was just a Beta in his early twenties, no one noticed he was missing in all this chaos.
They’d met in a hidden cave by the lake Ashley had already shown Kade the other day. The Beta was already there by the time he arrived.
"I need all the information about Felix Embermane," he said, getting straight to the point, as he shifted back into his human form. He barely bothered to wrap a blanket around himself to cover up, before he sat down on the rocks. He was going to shift back to his wolf form soon anyway, so why bother with clothes? "Start with his parents."
"His father is the former leader of the pack and an Elder, Wilder Embermane. He had left the pack four years ago after handing the leadership to Jared Thorne, and hasn’t been seen since then, although his absence is considered accounted for," the Beta explained, sticking to the plain facts. "As for his mother, her name was Sienna Winterfell. She was Wilder Embermane’s fated mate, and they had a child together, but she had always been weak, unsuitable to become the pack’s Luna, so they ended their bond shortly after Felix’s birth. She had died eight years ago, when Felix was eleven."
"Ended their bond," Kade repeated slowly. "Was it a mutual decision?"
"Well... I was still a pup back then, but from what I’ve heard, it was Wilder Embermane who rejected her."
"And how was Felix’s relationship with his parents?"
"He was close to his mother, and resented his father for casting her aside."
"Hmm." Kade tapped his fingers on his thigh. Now he could finally understand Felix’s reaction back when he mentioned his father... And perhaps his skepticism toward mate bonds, considering how his mother was treated...
"Why did Wilder have a child with Sienna Winterfell in the first place, if he considered her unsuitable?" he couldn’t help but ask. "Was she perhaps strong at that point, and only grew weaker later?"
"Ah, I’m not sure. From what I’ve heard, she had always been weak..."
"Then what did she suffer from? What caused her death? And did her son inherit her illness?"
"This..." the Beta scratched his head. "I’m sorry, Young Master, but I don’t know. From what I’ve heard, Sienna Winterfell had been sickly all her life, and her mother had also died young, which was why everyone speculated that Felix would also be weak... But, as we grew older, he got much stronger and has been healthy since then."
"...Alright then. Now, tell me about Jared. What was his relationship with Felix?"
"They... Well, that’s a bit complicated. They were always meant to be a match, even long before it was known they were fated mates, although Felix wasn’t aware of it. It was his father’s arrangement, to pair up his Omega son with the future leader," the Beta explained. Although he didn’t understand why Kade wanted to know any of it, his job as the spy was to gather and rely information, not to ask questions, so he earnestly relayed everything he knew.
"The problem was that Felix had never liked Jared, ever since they were kids... He was bullied quite a lot when we were kids, until he got strong enough to beat most of the other pups up. And even after that, he never got along with the other Omegas."
Kade nodded his head. He had already noticed that.
"What about after they discovered their fated mate bond?" he asked next.
"Felix didn’t want to accept it. At first, he just tried to go on about his life as always, hoping Jared would just give up... But then his heat happened. And they slept together."
"In his heat," Kade repeated. "Then, was Felix willing?"
"Well." The Beta scratched his head. "Of course not. He was devastated. He would have never agreed to it if it wasn’t for his heat and the mate bond pushing him toward Jared..."
Hearing this, Kade couldn’t help but scoff.
How stupid. Jared Thorne was truly stupid. No matter how much he wanted the Omega - and Kade could understand him on that, Felix was cute and beautiful, and adorable in many ways - that wasn’t the way to treat your mate. Your mate was supposed to be your partner, who would care for you and support you, and vice versa. What sane Alpha would do anything that would make their mate hate them? Kade could also just grab Felix under his arm and drag him to the Bloodmoon Pack with him, and he was tempted to do so... But it was better to play the long game, and win the Omega over slowly, so that they could build a good relationship together.
But, oh well. It was good for Kade that Jared was a complete moron and an utter jerk. Because if he wasn’t, then his cute little mate wouldn’t have run away from the pack, and perhaps they would have never met!
"Anyway," he let out a sigh, brushing his hair back. "So that was Jared. What about the others? Was there anyone Felix was close to in the pack?"
"Well... I guess that would be me?" the Beta smiled.
