I Would Rather Be a Rogue [BL] -

Chapter 33: Confidential Information
That night encounter changed nothing between them. Kade still wandered around suspiciously in Felix’s proximity, but without approaching him, while Felix continued to, well, maybe not ignore the Alpha, but simply act as if they didn’t know each other. He didn’t even thank Kade for his help with the unknown wolf. Not because he wasn’t grateful at all... But thanking Kade would mean acknowledging Felix needed the man, or at least that’s how it felt, so it was best to pretend as if that whole incident never happened.
Being rude was fine. Making Kade think he was welcome to bother Felix was not.
However, Kade didn’t feel the need for any invitation, or even permission. It seems that in his mind, their fated mate bond was enough. And so, only a few days later, he showed up at Felix’s doorstep again.
"What do you want?" Felix asked through the closed door, letting out a quiet sigh, too tired to get as annoyed as he should.
"Open the door first," came the response from outside.
Why would Felix listen, though? If he were to open the door even a crack, he’d have to deal with Kade making himself comfortable in his house. Thus, he said curtly, "State your purpose first."
If it was anything ridiculous, such as ’I want to see my mate...’
But it wasn’t. Probably. Because Kade’s answer was, "I have something important I need to tell you."
So there was still a chance Felix’s suspicion wasn’t wrong.
"Just say it through the door."
"I can’t!" Kade protested. "It’s too sensitive to speak about in public."
At which, Felix turned around, and walked back to the kitchen.
"It really is important! You might want to hear it!" Kade insisted, calling after Felix.
And after he received no response, "Just, come to the door for a moment! I can’t yell it out loud!"
Felix heaved a long, exasperated sigh. Still, he put the kitchen knife down, and dragged himself back to the front door. "Go on."
"Press your ear to the door," Kade instructed. Then, after a moment of pause - he seemed to be waiting about as much time as he thought it would take Felix to stop hesitating and do what he had asked - he also leaned closer, and whispered, "It concerns the Moonhill Pack."
In a blink, the door swung open, revealing Felix’s dark and clouded face. "Fine. Come in. It’d better be important," he muttered unwillingly, letting the Alpha inside.
For once, Kade was right. There was a high chance Felix might want to hear it. While he didn’t care what happened to his former pack, he was technically still on the run. Still being searched for. Thus, such information could be crucial to his survival.
Even though he truly did not like that smug look on Kade’s face.
He closed the door, and returned to the kitchen. Just because he agreed to talk, it didn’t mean he was going to waste any time on Kade! The Alpha could just say what he had to say while Felix prepared a meal for himself. And then leave, so that Felix could eat in peace, of course.
"Oh? You’re making us a meal?" Kade’s eyes curved into crescents, as he noticed the meat and the vegetables prepped on the counter. "That’s nice, but if you came with me, then you wouldn’t-"
All of a sudden, he paused in the middle of the sentence. Possible reasons? A few. It could have been Felix’s dark expression, the fox glaring at him from the bedroom door, noticing an ingredient he disliked, remembering something unexpected... Or perhaps the tip of the kitchen knife pointed right at his face.
Most likely the tip of the knife pointed at his face.
"Get to the point," Felix snapped coldly.
"Alright, alright." Kade lifted his arms, palms open, and took two steps back, before taking a seat on one of the wobbly chairs with uneven legs. Aggressive as Felix currently appeared, Kade knew the Omega wouldn’t actually attack him, so there was no reason for him not to make himself comfortable. He watched Felix cut the chicken fillet for a moment, before he slowly said, "Wilder Embermane had been spotted in South Redmont."
Chop!
The knife hit the board with a particularly loud noise, as something flickered through Felix’s face. It lasted only for a second though, and vanished before Kade could even try to grasp what sort of emotion that was.
"So? Is that it?" Felix asked in a bored voice, as he switched the knife, and moved on to cut the vegetables. He grabbed an onion first... But when he thought about what it might do to his eyes, he decided to leave it for when Kade was gone, and started chopping red pepper instead. "Is that supposed to be your important news?"
That was clearly not the reaction Kade was expecting. "You... don’t care?"
"No." Felix shrugged his shoulders. "Why would I?"
He wasn’t just pretending, he truly was not concerned. South Redmont was far away from both Silverfall and the Moonhill Pack. It seemed that Wilder did not know, or did not care, about Felix running away. And even if he knew, and was searching for him, his direction was completely off.
But it was unlikely that he was looking for Felix. Wilder might have been an Elder of the Moonhill Pack, but it was just a title. He had been away for over two years now, on some secret personal mission no one knew about, probably not even Jared. So even though he was Felix’s...
"But he’s your father."
THUD!
The knife stabbed into the wooden board, causing Felix to frown. He would have to buy a new one now. Sure, the boards might not have been the most expensive items ever, but it was still an extra expense. And because of what?
"I don’t have a father," Felix muttered through clenched teeth.
"What? But I’m certain that..."
"I don’t have a father," Felix repeated, his voice louder and firmer this time. "I am an orphan."
