I Would Rather Be a Rogue [BL]
Chapter 34: Modern Art

Chapter 34: Modern Art

"...Oh," was the only thing Kade could say in response, stunned speechless. "Uh... I’m sorry."

Felix’s statement was downright confusing. Kade knew for a fact that Felix was Wilder Embermane’s son, that much was easy to find. So, unless the Moonhill Pack was hiding Wilder’s death, he was not an orphan. And the way Felix spoke about it made Kade almost convinced it wasn’t the case.

But that was more or less all he could have known. Even if there was a spy from the Bloodmoon Pack hiding in the Moonhill Pack, the most they would report was that Wilder’s whereabouts were unknown, at least for most members of the pack, and maybe that Felix was Jared Thorne’s fated mate. A spy’s communication with their pack was always scarce, due to the risk it carried, thus they only tended to report what they considered to be crucial information.

And Felix’s attitude toward his father was unlikely to be counted as such. Kade would need to do a more in-depth investigation, perhaps even send someone to visit the Moonhill Pack, to discover more details about the Omega’s life.

Which he was likely to do after this flop. First, however, he needed to figure out how to turn the situation around, to end the meeting on a good note.

The oil sizzled, as Felix tossed the chicken fillet, cut into cubes, onto the hot frying pan. Despite the tense atmosphere, he just carried on with his cooking. He didn’t bother to ask Kade to leave, since he suspected it wouldn’t go smoothly anyway, and instead decided to just wait for the Alpha to get bored and leave on his own. He had to give up on using onion because of the man’s presence... But it was whatever, the food should still taste fine.

With Felix busy cooking and paying no attention to Kade, the Alpha’s eyes started wandering around. While it wasn’t his first time in the Omega’s house, but the third, both previous times his visits were short, and he was far too preoccupied with something (someone) else, and thus he had no time to take a good look around.

The house was small, and in a bad state. Terrible even, in Kade’s eyes. The floorboards were damaged, the wallpapers were covered up in stains and scratches, peeling off the walls, and the furniture was all faulty in one way or the other. The old couch standing by the wall was sunken and dirty, to the point it would have been better off thrown away, the chairs were wobbly, and so was the table - it was only stable thanks to the book placed underneath the short leg. It was as if rather than a house to live in, it was just a dumpster for the unwanted furniture. The bedroom missed the door, and the bed...

Kade’s eyes narrowed as they met with Remi’s piercing blue eyes.

That fox again. It had bothered him ever since he found out that Felix was not a hybrid, but what was that fox thinking, sleeping in Kade’s fated mate’s bed like it owned the place?

Kade threw a furtive glance at Felix, and seeing that the Omega was still busy cooking, he quietly got up, and sneaked to the bedroom. What for, he didn’t know - he knew better than to mess with Felix’s ’pet’, as he already knew he’d only get scolded for that. But it wouldn’t hurt to take a closer look - and see his mate’s bedroom while at it!

The fox was clean and well-groomed, his red fur soft and shiny. He was on the larger side, even for an adult male, but still within the normal range. As he lay on the bed, there was nothing particularly odd about him, except for his smell, which could be explained by living indoors with Felix and getting proper care...

And the fact that it was living with a wolf. That was probably the weirdest part of it all. Wolves were stronger, and occasionally killed foxes, and as a result, foxes tended to avoid them. It was odd to find one that could feel so comfortable at a werewolf’s house.

But that was about it. Kade felt there was something wrong with the fox, but couldn’t quite pinpoint what.

Eventually, he gave up with a sigh, and took a step back, turning around to examine yet another collection of mismatched furniture...

"Huh," he muttered, picking up some unidentifiable object. "It’s that what they call modern art?"

Felix’s head instantly snapped up. He quickly turned off the gas, and stepped out of the kitchen. "What are you doing?!" He looked into the bedroom...

Only to see Kade holding up one of his ’finished’ creations, which was originally meant to be a sock, but ended up as a scarf (for the sake of Felix’s mental wellbeing, don’t ask how!), and examining it from every side.

"Put that down!" Felix called, not even realizing that his voice came out a bit too high-pitched and shaky. It was just so embarrassing!

And what made it worse, was that Kade laughed in response. "Why? You’ve put so much effort into making this, uh, scarf, so it’d be a shame if it were to go to waste!" he said, as he attempted to wrap the creation around his neck. "But don’t worry, once you join the Bloodmoon Pack, you won’t have to- Ah!"

A startled scream escaped Kade’s throat, as something tugged sharply on the scarf all of a sudden. Remi had jumped up, biting onto one end, and trying to pull the scarf off the Alpha’s neck.

"Ah, not this fox again!" Kade furrowed his brows, defending his claim on Felix’s handiwork. "Let go! It’s mine no..."

He didn’t finish what he was going to say, because at that moment, the fragile and full of mistakes creation started quickly unraveling, unable to endure this tug of war.

And soon, Kade was left with just a bunch of tangled woolen thread, hanging helplessly from his hands.

Felix took a sharp breath, staring at his damaged work. "Get out." He pointed at the door.

"Uh..." Kade gulped, knowing he messed up.

"Right now."

Kade pressed his lips, hesitating for a moment. He didn’t want to leave... But maybe it would be best to step out for now, give Felix some time to cool down. "You hear it?" he glared at Remi, the culprit of this whole fiasco, at least in Kade’s belief. "We need to get out."

But, to his surprise (and disappointment), Felix specified coldly, "Remi can stay. Only you have to leave."

"What?" Kade’s eyes darkened. "But it’s his fault! If he hadn’t grabbed onto-"

"Remi was only trying to defend against a thief. How could I scold him for that?" Felix scoffed. Then, he turned to the fox, his expression softening, "Isn’t that right, Remi? Come here." He extended his arms.

Remi didn’t need to be told twice. He passed by Kade and jumped into Felix’s arms, snuggling into his chest.

"Who’s the good fox? You are!"

Kade stood rooted in place, watching as his fated mate rubbed the fox’s head, speaking to him softly. All while chasing Kade out!

And, as if it weren’t enough, the fox glanced back at him, meeting his gaze. He maintained eye contact for a moment... And then, he snickered, and snuggled even closer to Felix!

That damned fox was laughing at Kade!
