Chapter 56: The Arrival of the dragons that had been summoned

The horizon seemed to wink. A gust of wind tore through it and descended on the scene. Rhett held his breath as a gust of wind drove right into his face. It seemed like a blizzard drove from the west, coming at them. It seemed to come with a great amount of wind.

The ground continued to shake and he fell on his knees, trying to balance himself. He held his breath and watching Haicor almost fall, he quickly ran over to her and held her in motion.

The old knight who had hit his hand on the ground now cried:

"Summoning a dragon comes with a consequence, and summoning many, it comes with many consequences!".

Rhett blinked, trying to digest that.

’WTF!’, he exclaimed in his mind.

Consequence?, anything could happen.

His voice tore into the air: "Brace yourselves for a challenge!".

He put Haicor on his back and ran with speed. He signalled with a nod to Ash to do the same and he compiled, running with him.

The other dragon slayers ran to safety, for a split second they were tempted to run into the dark tower. It seemed to be a safe harbor now but what were they thinking? That was ridiculous!.

And so they ran towards it, not necessarily very near to it.

Rhett, the old knight just a few steps away from him , asked:

"How long will the consequences last?".

The old knight looked at the sky and then at Rhett’s face.

"I don’t know, perhaps in an hour?".

"Sweet lord!", Ash exclaimed. "There are levels to being daft you know, how do we survive, this is terrifying already".

The old Knight made no comment to his statement.

"That’s why we need to pray we see a sign of a dragon before the ground splits", said the knight.

Rhett’s voice tore into the air:

"Are you serious!, if you had earlier told king Rhett this was going to be the consequence, I’m sure he would have backed out and we’d just continued the hard way".

The old knight smiled, breathing hard, his face turning to Ash:

"I believe in King Rhett, I believe in the king of the dragon slayers!".

Rhett raised his eyebrows after hearing that.

This was motivation!.

He ran faster now, soon,he had dropped Haicor. He must have made the right decision because two seconds later, the ground split. It was just a small fracture but Rhett suspected it would enhance and now he wasn’t taking any chances.

He leaped farther to his right, and holding Haicor tightly he flung her over to Ash and told them to stand beside the tower.

"What chances are there that a dragon will soon arrive?", Rhett asked the old knight.

He shrugged. "Frankly I’d say 3/10".

Rhett titled his neck sideways. "Then I’ll hold on to that".

The splitting of the ground was coming to his side and seeing it he leaped back again. It was spreading and so, dangerously.

He looked at them, his subjects, they all crumpled behind the tower, their faces scared and petrified.

Rhett squinted his eyes and looked at the ground that was splitting, he made a bet, he would-

He thought it over, was it a good idea, jum-

The ground expanded more, leaving the middle to have a great hole.

Rhett calculated his chances, what would this seem to be worth?, the danger he was about to put himself in. Ash furrowed his eyebrows, he was thinking something, he sensed what Rhett was about to do and before he could open his mouth to warn him, he heard the hurried sound of footfalls.

Rhett and took a plunge into the divided earth.

Ash cursed under his breath. "Damn!".

The old knight shrugged, not in the least afraid of the situation at hand.

"Well, that was anticlimactic", he said.

Ash looked him over and scoffed.

"King Rhett just committed suicide and it’s all your damn fault. How could you summon the dragons when you knew the consequences, why!".

"He will not die", said the old knight. "It’s written in the prophecy".

Haicor was too stunned to talk and rant like Ash, she was just quiet, her eyes teary. Tears were also welling in Ash’s eyes, he tried to blink them out but it seemed abortive. Tears now trickled from Haicor’s eyes. Ash held his in, now walking over to where the earth divided.

The earth had now stopped quaking and to Ash it felt as if it had always wanted to eat Rhett and now it had accomplished that.

Ash, now at the end of what looked like a cliff, knelt down and holding his breath, looking sad and like someone that just lost his mother looked down and said:

"Curse your bravery m’lord, damn your f**kin’ bravery. Must you, must -must -", his words faltered now. He looked at Haicor whose face was now soaked in tears and he pitied her. He looked at the old knight in spite, the old knight who was now trying to act sorry too, or he was just sorry.

Ash looked down at the cliff. He saw nothing, just darkness. He saw nothing to make him feel hopeful that soon Rhett was coming, he was nothing to-.

He stood up, his hands on his face and faced backwards, looking intently at Dhamsel who was showing a bit of remorse on her face.

"It’s official", Ash said, raising his hands up. "It’s f**kin’ official, the king of the dragon slayers, the damn king of the dragon slayers is dead. He was brave and fearless, risking his life for us. He sacrificed his life for ours, he died so we could live".

The old knight looked perplexed. "But I thought he was the king in the prophecy".

Ash shrugged. "Perhaps he is not, I don’t know, perhaps he is just the king of the dragon slayers!".

"Then who will lead us now?", voiced a knight from the dragon slayers.

They heard a whistle, the sound of something plunging upwards and then King Rhett’s voice:

"I will!".
