Chapter 41: A Duel of kings [1]

King vongarth stared at Rhett lethargically. Rhett stared back with the same energy, walking over to a knight from the crowd and signalling for a sword. The guard threw him one and he caught it in style.

The earlier battle with Mychel at the battle stadium had taught him how to catch a sword and doing so now, he felt as if he had impressed the crowd. He rolled the sword and said to King vongarth:

"C’mon old man, let’s do this!".

King vongarth looked at Dhamsel at the terrace and she could only stare at him with a stare of ’i warned you.’

King vongarth looked at his cloth, it was dirty and not like him and that made him bite the lower part of his lips in self disgust.

How did it come to this?

He signalled to a guard to hand him a sword which they did, throwing it from the crowd. He dodged it because it seemed like it was aiming for his legs. Picking it up he said to Rhett:

"Let the best man win".

Rhett nodded as he bent a little, positioning himself for an attack. King vongarth seemed too easy to beat. That was what he thought, but he knew reality might be different. And so going into this battle, he couldn’t underestimate the power of the fat man in front of him.

He couldn’t read the thoughts in king vongarth’s mind, but he knew they wouldn’t be good ones. He knew it would be mischievous and vicious and so he concluded, again, that perhaps this man in front of him, at this moment might seem helpless, he shouldn’t underestimate him.

Rhett took a step forward and King vongarth stepped backwards, in an enervated motion. His eyes occasionally rotated from Rhett’s feet and eyes, he held his sword in a grip that seemed like if he tightened it more , the sword might break from pressure.

Suddenly King vongarth lunged his sword at Rhett’s neck, the latter weaved to the side and aimed his sword for king vongarth’s side who also swerved to the side and almost fell to the ground.

Rhett was panting very hard now. Now he was very sure not to underestimate King vongarth.

Ash had now moved a bit near the crowd of fighters and as he watched with bated breaths, he was secretly scared for Rhett’s life. King vongarth was an exceptional fighter and it had taken a bit of luck for him to defeat him at the battle stadium.

Now watching his beady eyes stare at Rhett, his grip on the sword very strong, he felt king vongarth actually had a chance to defeat Rhett if he didn’t fight exceptionally.

King vongarth thrust his sword forward, Rhett turned in a 360 and coming out of it, he pressed a kick forward at king vongarth’s face who, ducking to dodge it, sent a jab to the jaw of Rhett who reeled backwards. Capitalizing on it, he gave him a cross and then an uppercut, Rhett falling to the ground and getting up quickly.

The spectators were sort of shocked with this, their fat and frog looking king was beating the king of the dragon slayers who had just slayed an ember dragon. For some, it was incredible.

"Your dad is quite a fighter I see", Haicor said to Dhamsel who was sort of engrossed in the fighting scene.

"Oh, he’s good", Dhamsel said. "But I never expected he was still good".

Haicor looked at her face. "Oh, don’t you want your father to emerge victorious?".

Dhamsel matched the stare with a stare of her own and turning away she shrugged.

"I’m actually on the fence on this".

The sound of a shout made them look at the scene again. Rhett was on the ground, yet again, his face bloody, his eyes bloodshot. He stared at king vongarth’s face who was slowly nearing him, his face vicious.

Rhett stood up and exchanged a quick glance with Ash who wore a terrified look on his face. Rhett looked away and gripped hai sword more tightly, directing it at King vongarth face. The latter moved to one side and used his own sword, in a motion that seemed impossible to Rhett, to hit his.

Rhett’s sword fell to the ground and king vongarth hit his, very quickly yet again, at Rhett stomach, by the side. Rhett lunged back with that and held his the attacked area, his face looking weak, his expression now dull and languor.

King vongarth’s voice tore to the skies: "You come to my kingdom and try to defeat me!".

Rhett breathed hard, his eyes almost shutting. What was wrong with him, he had just defeated a dragon, why couldn’t he defeat an old man. He felt depleted and to stand was but an effort. He felt woozy and he was now seeing phosphenes.

King vongarth started forward and delivered his feet into the chest of Rhett who now fell so easily to the ground.

Ash turned to the ground and said in a loud voice:

"Is the fight to death?".

"Of course", the crowd said in unison.

’Damn’, Ash thought.

Rhett was weak now and it was very likely he would lose. Why would he not, thought Ash. He had just ran around, chased by a dragon and its rider. He had just slayed an ember dragon and its rider. He had just slayed three knights. Doing all that while spending the night at Chain prison, bound in chains and being tortured by the Seer.

King vongarth was now standing of Rhett now, his face masked with spite and desire to kill.

Haicor stood up now.

"Please don’t kill him!", She shouted.

King vongarth looked at her in pure disdain, his face spiteful.

"It has to be done young girl, I have to slay your king and you will be having the pleasure to watch", he said, gritting his teeth hardly.

Dhamsel too stood up but said no word. She looked at Rhett, who now in stupor looked good as dead, he was just a thrust away from dying.

Ash looked at king vongarth, walking slowly towards him.

"You win, you can take him as a prisoner", he said. "Just spare his life please".

King vongarth shook his head sideways. "For my sanity, for my legacy, for my mental wellbeing, I have to kill him".

Rhett was breathing very hardly, his face blank, staring into the face of the man who was about to kill him.

Slowly, in a robotic move, king vongarth, the first of his name, raised his sword up and putting it down, thrust it to the side of Rhett’s belly.

Ash was in shock.
