Chapter 97: The Sleeping Woman In His Bed

Somehow, Levi got them home in one piece. Ge carefully lifted Lyse into his arms and carried her out of the car and into the house. As they walked into the house, Mr Dalton approached.

"The doctor has arrived sir and is waiting in your bedroom." Mr Dalton cringed as Lyse moaned and kissed Levi.

His face turned red to see them act so wantonly. He did not know what was happening but he could tell something had happened. Mrs Van Doren who was usually so cold towards Mr Van Doren was draped all over him and clinging to him while kissing everywhere that she could reach.

Levi glared at him and Mr Dalton quickly looked down at his feet in embarrassment, remaining there until Levi was out of sight and then he ran away as if he was chased by the hounds of hell.

As soon as Levi got into the room, the doctor was waiting.

"Come this way." The doctor instructed. Levi quickly followed her into the bathroom where the tub was filled with water.

"Lower her in." She said.

Levi lowered an oblivious Lyse into the water and she shrieked as loudly as a banshee when her overheated skin met the frigid water.

She instinctively held unto the front of Levi’s shirt and pulled, making him tumble into the water with her.

"It’s alright baby, nothing will hurt you." Levi reassured her as he got into the water fully clothed and held her.

"Colddd." Lyse whispered, her teeth clattering.

Levi kissed the back of her neck and rubbed his hands along arms that were spotted with goosebumps.

"Her clothes need to be taken off, Mr Van Doren." The doctor told him.

Levi began to take off Lyse’s clothes and he was forced to hold her down when she tried to escape from the ice cold water. He stripped her until she was down to her underwear.

After what Felt like hours in the bathtub, the doctor held out a towel. "You can let her out of the water now."

As Levi stepped out of the water, Lyse grabbed him. She refused to be away from his touch. He pulled her out of the water then the doctor covered her with the towel.

After he rubbed her dry, the doctor instructed him to hold Lyse while she administered an injection. Almost immediately after that was done, Lyse’s eyes started to flutter and she sagged against Levi.

He swept her off her feet then placed her on the bed and put on one of his Tshirts on her before tucking her in. As Lyse drifted off to sleep, Levi sat beside her, his hand gently stroking her hair. He felt a wave of guilt and helplessness wash over him. He had failed to protect her, to keep her safe.

When he was sure that Lyse was asleep, Levi got up and changed out of his wet clothes before going out to meet the doctor.

"Will she be okay?" He demanded.

"She might have a cold from the ice bath but that was necessary to bring down her temperature." The doctor explained. "And she will need a lot of liquids but other than that, she will be back to normal by morning."

"What could have caused that?" Levi asked.

After a thoughtful pause, the Doctor said. "A lot of aphrodisiacs have been created to disappear from the blood stream immediately after being administered, so it might be hard to know what this is."

When Levi’s brow creased, she continued. "If we could get the utensils she drank and ate out of, that would make testing easier but I could also get a sample from her."

Levi’s frown deepened. "Can you take the sample tomorrow?" He asked.

"Unfortunately, now would be the best time to take the sample. Leaving it till later may cause us to lose it." She said, then clarified. "But you don’t have to worry, Mrs Van Doren has been sedated so she will barely feel the prick or the needle."

"Alright then." Levi gave his permission then followed the doctor to the room and watched as the doctor took the sample by pricking Lyse’s finger and true to her word, Lyse frowned a little then her brow smoothed over immediately after.

"As soon as the tests are done, I will get back to you." The doctor said.

"And if I am able to get the glass she had the drink in, I will inform you." Levi answered.

Mr Dalton came by and led the doctor out of the house while Levi shut the door and looked down at Lyse.

It felt like he had betrayed her. If Joel had been even a little later, Lyse would have been hurt. He wondered how it was that trouble seemed to just be waiting for her at every corner. At that moment, he was ready to slay all that troubled Lyse.

His phone rang, then he glanced at Lyse to be sure that the sound had not disturbed her but she was fast asleep.

He went out and answered the call as he stared at the moon in the sky.

"Speak." He said.

"The waiter that served Mrs Van Doren has disappeared sir."

"What fo you mean?" Levi asked. Even though his voice was low, anger radiated in waves off him.

"He appeared to have finished from work but he has not gotten home yet and none of his family have been able to reach him."

Levi wondered why the waiter would suddenly disappear, had he been warned to keep a low profile after what he had done?

"And the glass that Lyse drank from?" He demanded.

"There is no way to tell which one is the glass, Sir."

"I want that restaurant shut down." Levi said, the authority in his voice brooking no argument. "I want that glass found."

"Yes, sir."

"And Jean Pierre?" Levi asked.

"He has been sent to Jail, his lawyer tried to get him bail but it has been refused as per your instructions."

"Make sure he is ready to speak by the time i see him tomorrow." Levi instructed them ended the call.

He returned to the room and looked at the sleeping woman in his bed.
