Chapter 35: PDA

Lyse’s heart sank. She could see it in his eyes that he would carry out his threat if she did not accept his terms. If the shelter were to be exposed, the women there would be at risk. Their anonymity, their safety, everything would be compromised.

"I cannot believe that you are despicable enough to do something like this." She spat, her back rigid with anger.

Levi’s eyes turned as hard as rock and he said, "I am a man who makes deals, I have only risen to my position because I did not let a no stop me, so believe me when I say nothing is out of bounds."

She thought about how those women depended on her and she had to step up and do what she had to do. She knew she could not risk it, she had the feeling that Levi was not bluffing. The women at the shelter were vulnerable, and they needed protection. She sighed, her shoulders slumping.

"Fine, you win." she said, her voice barely a whisper. "I will do it. But on my own terms."

Levi looked like he had expected her to say that and he smiled a beautiful smile that almost made her forget that he was a devious snake who was willing to stoop to unbelievable depths just in order to win. She did not envy the people who had to do business with him.

"Name your terms then."

Lyse thought for a moment. "First of all, I want complete transparency. I want to know exactly what you are planning, what you expect of me."

Levi nodded. "Fair enough."

"Second," she continued, "I want to be able to leave this charade after four months, No strings attached."

Levi answered without any hesitation. "No Deal, five months and then you are as free as a bird."

"Fine!" Lyse bit out in frustration.

What really was the difference between four months and five months? Just one month. She would be done soon enough and then she would never have anything to do with him after.

"And the third and final one." She added, "If we have to share a room we will not share a bed, ever."

Levi looked at her as if he was about to argue but thought better of it and accepted. "I agree."

"Will that be all?" He asked when Lyse did not add anymore.

When she nodded he gave her an answering nod and said, "No one is to know that our marriage is fake you have to act like a dutiful wife who is very much in love with me when anyone is around." There was a pause then he added.

"This means Pda." Lyse made a face of disgust at the thought of kissing him and Levi rolled his eyes. "It also means that you will not see other men."

Lyse sneered at him and asked, "Does that also apply to you or are you going to keep entertaining women?"

"Already jealous, I like that very much." Levi said mockingly and Lyse scoffed. "Don’t worry, I am going to be the very picture of a devoted husband."

"Is that all then?"

"Yes, Chris will be ready with the agreement for you to sign and you will receive a story about how we met." He said.

"Is there anything more?" Lyse sneered.

"Actually, I brought some things for the ladies."

Lyse’s eyebrow rose in surprise. "Why?" She demanded, sure that there was some ulterior motive behind his generosity.

Levi’s face looked like his feelings were hurt and he placed his hand on his chest and replied, "Because I am not such a monstrous personLyse. moreover it is bad manners to visit a place without bringing gifts."

He stepped out the door and as Lyse contemplated whether to follow him or not, a procession of men carrying wrapped up boxes came in one after the other and dropped the boxes they held before going back out and returning with more until there was a large pile of boxes in the corner. It looked like Christmas Eve.

When the last man had dropped his box, Levi came back in again and Lyse stiffly told him thank you.

He felt amused because even though the gifts were appreciated and needed, he knew that she did not appreciate where the gifts had come from and she would reject him if she could. But he did not care, he was actually quite happy that he had gotten what he wanted.

"I am going to let you have tonight to say your goodbyes to your friends because Joel is going to come by tomorrow to pick you up." He said.

Lyse was ready to snarl at him for assuming that she would immediately jump to do his instructions when he wagged his finger at her as if he knew exactly what she was thinking and that annoyed her even more.

Then before she knew it, he was leaning pretty close to her face and her eyes drifted shut then she felt his warm breath on the side of her face.

"Speaking of those friends of yours you are going to have a lot of explaining to do and now would be a good time to practice that PDA."

Lyse turned her head to the side and saw shocked faces peering at them through the window and she turned around and glared at Levi’s amused face before pecking him quickly then she took several steps away from him.

"That was a poor attempt, we are going to have to teach you how to do better." He said and when Lyse looked like she wanted to strangle him he started to laugh loudly before walking away and leaving her face red and her fists held tightly.

As she watched him walk away, she could not help but wonder what the future held for them. Would she ever be truly free from this man? Or would she be forever bound to a life of deception and compromise?

She was shaken out of her thoughts by voices all around her.

"Who was that handsome hunk and where can I get one of those?" Janine demanded playfully, grinning at Lyse.

"That.. was my husband." Lyse said sheepishly and everyone went silent.
